  1. Hi all, hope everyone's alright, can anyone tell me if it will snow in Cardiff tomorrow lol?

I highly doubt it. It doesn't look likely for snow in many places. The further North and more elevated you are, the better. You might see some flakes but mixed in with rain, it makes it pointless. No fear though! The BEST of the weather is yet to come! (Mid January/February) They are actually the better times for snow as the sun is a lot weaker then due to it being mid winter (I think >.<)

  2. Yes i agree, the storm that is forecasted to begin on Thursday is pretty much nailed on. It's just a case of will see upgrades or downgrades, little tiny details will be added in the coming 24hrs im sure(Sorry if i always state the obvious!)

Yes I see what you mean. Obviously we're all hoping for upgrades, temperature wise, not wind speed! ahha

Little things are bound to change but... If things continue in the same vein we could have an even better situation than now, marginally:) (Fingers crossed!)

  3. -16c maxes in texas? Are you serious, its extremely rare to get minimums of that in texas I think.

Take a look, although my American geography isn't so good and it may be somewhere completely different but there are pretty low daytime temps there, considering that it isn't in Greenland or the Arctic!

  4. Like I said, it contradicts itself a bit but it's still early stages! smile.png

And I preferred 2009/2010 as well even though last year was much more severe!

    2009/2010:

Days of lying snow = 37

    Lowest maximum = -3°C

    Lowest minimum = -12°C

    Deepest snow = 1' (4' drifts)

    2010/2011:

Days of lying snow = 34 (22 consecutive)

    Lowest maximum = -8°C!

    Lowest minimum = -15°C

    Deepest snow = 15" (6' drifts!)

Note: The temperature never rose above freezing point between 26th November and 9th December, that's 2 weeks!

I think 2009/2010 was more charming because it started snowing a week prior to Christmas, adding to the festivity, and it carried on snowing for a few weeks after, which dragged out that Christmassy feel! smile.png

2010/2011 ran out of steam before Christmas!

Are those figures for your area? Where I live, November wasn't that good compared to a lot of other places as we only got 1-2 inches of snow :( However, the thing I remember most is that it didn't stop snowing for about a week! The snow was only v. light though but it was cool having it snow everywhere I went :p

Yeah, the problem with last year was although I had loads of snow on the ground at Christmas, it was all old snow and melted a couple of days later :(

  5. Disappointing! An average if not mild winter overall sad.png At least there's still time for change!

It doesn't say that at all! It's cold weather for Nov. and Dec. The mild is said to be January, but with the caution that confidence is low at that time period. Chin up!

Surprisingly, even though we had a lot of snow last year, 17th December (12" where I live, something that wasn't predicted by any major weather..people), my favourite winter of my short life was January 2010, because even though the snow was less, it seemed to last longer, around 2 weeks if I remember correctly. That season also brought a couple of inches in December aswell.

I hope we get some Nov. - February cold/snow as my Dad keeps going on about 63, boasting almost and I feel a little sad :( haa

  6. Codge? Not a clue what you are on about.

And secondly, one man's meat is another man's poison. We all like different weather. Snow and ice can cause types of damage, disruption and even death too, and I have no guilt about liking certain forms of dramatic weather a-thank-ayou-so-much. If forecasts are heeded and precautions taken then damage or disruption or death can be kept to a minimum.

Jan 2008 might have sucked in your neck of the woods but I lived in Lincs and we had average sunshine, though it was wet, but mostly in the form of showers with only half the days getting any rain.

For me, winter weather priority is as follows. Mild first, then sun, then dryness. Mildest will always win! That seems to agress the proles around here. I let them like cold so they can let me like mild!

If you got a problem with it maybe you should call this place the "Ice Cold Winter Lover's Brigade" or something. Hey. It's "netWEATHER.tv" not "netWINTER.tv". For people who enjoy different kinds of WEATHER.

You don't have to sound so defensive, he wasn't having a go.. Simply disagreeing with you, which I'm sure is allowed on your version of the site?

Technically by you saying mild always wins, you're not enjoying different kinds of weather, as most of the year is mild.

It's called winter and on this site, people like there weather by the season. Hot weather in Summer, storms in Autumn and cold and snow in Winter. Is that really a problem?

Anyway, as we're here to talk about the weather, I hope we DON'T get snow, yet. I'd rather get it all mid November and fit in some cool/stormy weather at the moment :)

  7. Fun but seems so pointless haha! I'd just like to mention, whilst I'm off-topic, I cannot wait for those winter nights whilst we are in the grip of a winter spell where we're all lamp post watching and eagerly awaiting for the next GFS/ECM run etc. It's actually awesome. That must sound so sad! biggrin.png

That doesn't sound sad, that sounds like a great mid winter night for most people on here, including me :p

  8. Possibly a battleground with cold easterlies giving convective showers to the east, and atlantic lp moving from the west with heavy precipitation, falling as snow against the cold air, mainly in W/SW England and Wales

Then that's what I have my fingers crossed for this Winter! Easterlies it is.

  9. The forecast mentions areas such as Wales, NW England. Now this obviously suggests frequent NW,lys. If this is what he is suggesting then its very unlikely that temps, snowfall records will be broken. The historic winters clearly show that extreme winters i.e 47, 63 have an E,ly element whether this is a NE,ly/ENE,E,ly.

I agree, just saying that forecast said West was best blum.gif

Can you help me out because I'm struggling to understand why we wouldn't get more snow from NW as there is a bigger body of water to cover? :S

As mentioned, the NW'ly that came last year was great, as it dumped around12-16 inches where I live!

What would be the best setup for countrywide heavy snow and cold as it seems to be, with snow, only East or only West, not both.

  10. I have never seen bftp back up anything he says with science, links, charts etc. I don't think he actually understands the science of it and has built up a reputation by telling people what they want to hear and remembering key terminology from googel articles.

I could be wring bftp bit now is the chance to show us all your not all talk and you can back things up with science??

Well see, if you don't your reputation will take a hit

Sorry mate but I've seen you on a few threads now and it seems to me that you are going out of your way to make trouble. If you're so clever, how about you compile a winter forecast for us please, seeing as BFTP doesn't do a good enough job of it. If you go on the BBC say we're going to have warm spell, do you expect them to back it up with a 100 page dossier on it? No. I can assure you BFTP knows more about weather than you do, and given that he gives up his time to write up a forecast for us should be praised.

"The perturbation cycle is maintaining a prevalent -ve NAO state and with oceans in cool state widespread NH cold is likely". Is that not "scientific" enough for you because it hardly oozes of misunderstanding.
