  1. The sky is a very dark leaden grey colour here at the moment and the rain is steady and getting heavier and heavier it seems, the winds are moderate to fresh breeze from a south to south easterly direction and are slowly but steadily increasing, once the back edge of the main rain band passes through and the rash of showers follow in behind later this evening that's when the winds will swing around to a south westerly and increase to Gale / severe gale force with locally storm force gusts in exposed locations near coastlines and on hilltops. Widespread inland gusts generally 55-65mph locally 70mph on coasts 75-80mph locally perhaps 85-90mph.
  2. And as much as the forecasts are supposed to be more accurate and timely now I actually think since they introduced the radar image TV forecasts on BBC back in about 2005 that the Mets forecasts have been more sketchy in their detail and seem to take longer to come to their conclusions, example being I remember when they still used weather symbols back when we had the October 2000 and 2002 storms they where forecast both accurately (in terms of their strength/intensity) and on time about 5 or 6 days before they hit, now it seems to me that their still piecing together information within 24 hours sometimes less then 12 hours before impending storms!
  3. It sounds to me like this storm is behaving very strangely and not how it was predicted to, perhaps it's central pressure is rising therefore it'll loose some of it's forecast potency or it's just winding itself up to deliver a sting in it's tail #Confused
  4. Your not too far from me, things certainly looking wild later on tonight I think from midnight through to about 6 to 9am tomorrow morning will be the peak!
  5. But it would also be foolish to underestimate it. If someone's house is too close to a tree for comfort then perhaps a safer option would be to sleep downstairs, or at least try to sleep but if things get that noisy outside then perhaps there'll be quite a few sleep deprived people come tomorrow morning #BaggyEyes
  6. I think they might be taking the jaffa cakes, either that or it's something to do with the way the low pressure is rotating. Once it's back edge swings around and it's southern flank crosses the south that's when the winds will start howling along the channel and in the SE.
  7. If London and the surrounding suburbs and counties get much over 70mph there'll be quite a lot of damage and disruption, problems brewing up folks so sit tight
  8. BBC London news weather forecast quoted that there could be 70mph+ winds around the London area in the early hours of tomorrow morning
  9. BBC London forecast just now the presenter quoted "Gusts of 70-80mph possible in early hours of tomorrow morning!" whether she meant to say nearer the south coast or not I don't know but considering it was a forecast for the London region slightly worrying, I get the impression that this is rapidly deepening before it's strongest winds come ashore just like Wednesday's storm did and that the Met Office have underestimated it and won't get out more representative warnings until within a few hours of it hitting, their cutting things very fine again!
  10. I doubt that very much, I'm further south then you in Essex which is 1 of the areas now included in the Amber zone (I'm not even sure if you've got Yellow warnings of wind yet) and the wind is nowhere near gusting 60mph here yet and is only expected to peak at about that through tonight with 80mph on the south coast so I'd be surprised if somewhere as far north as Yorkshire sees anything much above 40mph.
  11. I think this will be our strongest winter storm so far for our neck of the woods, I don't think we've had gusts over 60mph here for a good couple of years at least something tells me that's going to change tonight.
  12. Lol thank god they had the foresight to make the glass solid against strong winds hey?...
  13. BBC national forecast on News 24 just now the presenter said gusts inland as far north as London could get as high as 70mph and Amber warnings cover the SE.
  14. Remember the Met Office wind predictions are only based on averages over 3 hour periods so if it says gusts upto 58mph that's to be taken as an average at any specific time, in reality there'll probably be a fair number of gusts above 60mph maybe even close to 70mph which for inland places certainly merits an Amber warning.
  15. Morning folks well the weather is already closing in here this morning the rain has started all be it only drizzle at the moment and the wind has began picking up already, not looking forward to tonight as I don't think I'll be getting much sleep the Amber warning zone has recently been expanded by the Met Office to cover more of our region including more inland areas of Kent, Essex and eastern Greater London where it states gusts of 60mph or more are possible!
  16. They've already extended the warnings inland a little but only to cover more of the South-East and East Anglia, it states on the updated Met Office warning that the Amber zone now covers a wider area of the SE including Greater London where gusts of 60mph or more are likely overnight!
  17. Thanks for that path prediction map Essex Boy very interesting, it certainly suggests 60mph+ winds in the highly populated parts of SE.
  18. It's abit small that mate, when I click on it to open it up it doesn't expand is there any way you can enlarge it?
  19. Completely agree with the previous couple of posts inland areas including the Midlands and East Anglia (Essex, Sussex, Norfolk) could see widespread inland gusts of 60mph+ possibly even something close to 70 locally with the south facing channel coasts probably topping 80mph maybe even the odd 90mph gusts, certainly don't be surprised if the Amber warning zone is expanded to cover more of southern England further inland and with the potential certainly for a RED warning to be warranted for the south coast nearer the time (tomorrow morning) I suspect.
  20. http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/forecast/south-ockendon-thurrock#?tab=map&fcTime=1392390000&map=GustSpeed&zoom=8&lon=0.30&lat=51.52 Some big gusts 60mph seems likely across the board based on that chart I posted a link to above!
