  1. Starting to weaken over the mountains now... Still looking relatively heavy though.
  2. It's not slowing down yet or losing intensity so pretty sure we're okay! Been so long since I've seen proper snow that I'm literally F5'ing the radar every 5 seconds
  3. Crazy to see a band of snow not weaking as it comes in from the north west - usually mountains kill any precipitation off. Got a good feeling about this one. Possibility of the thin but heavy band stalling over an area too once it reaches its furthest eastward progression!
  4. Wtf the radar looks completely different to any forecasts. Just woke up (late night) and I'm amazed at how far east & how early the front is. Might even reach here!! Exciting day ahead
  5. Finally snowing here! Not lying at all yet but still lovely to see.
  6. Raining just a few miles away in Alloa! Turning very slightly sleety now - always too marginal here in these sort of set-ups.
  7. Snow showers feeding into eastern counties on a brisk north-easterly wind Has to be stressed that it is too far away to be given much credence, but it's nice to see upgrades in the longevity of this cold spell instead of the downgrades we've been seeing the past few days!
  8. Looking at the uppers chart it would definitely be mainly Scotland and Northern England getting pasted with snow, whereas there would be a mixture of sleet and rain further south. Looks very promising though even for those who would get rain from that scenario - possibly an easterly setting up on this run. Of course, it's too far away to take that seriously but it's a nice trend to see.
  9. Fantastic +192h chart from the ECM tonight! You could tell from all the WAA moving into Greenland at 168 hrs that this was going to happen. That shortwave moving SE would be a very good snow event for much of the country. Easterly incoming? Certainly looks a lot more promising for us coldies today
  10. 3.9°C for me please. Mild start, short cold spell, turning milder again and then a more sustained cold spell at the end of the month is what I'm thinking.
  11. Just had a very unexpected flash of lightning here. Guess if we can't have snow on Christmas Eve then a thunderstorm is the next best thing! Can't see anything on the radar really - very strange. Definitely a flash of lightning followed by thunder though.
  12. Hey, one of my friends said that it had started lying for a while but they messaged me about 5 minutes ago to say that it had melted with the sleet. Yeah hopefully the Ochils are getting pasted!
  13. Started off as sleet but just plain old rain here now Meanwhile a few miles away in Stirling it's apparently snowing and lying. Just shows how much of an effect even a slight bit of elevation can have!
  14. Definitely a 10. Whenever I think of a uni I might want to apply to, the first thing I search is how much snow the area gets... Have ruled out Oxbridge purely down to a lack of snow - think I'll stay in Scotland!
  15. Haven't seen or heard anything from Camden. Cambridge looks to be getting pummelled now though...
  16. Had a lovely display of distant lightning here from the Edinburgh storm and then a few flashes overhead accompanied by thunder If the storms in Scotland had formed earlier, during the period of high instability (as they had been forecast to), I'm pretty sure there would have been some severe ones occurring. What a night across the north of the UK though; some parts (e.g. Central Scotland) didn't really live up to the forecast, but places like Manchester and Newcastle have been absolutely clobbered. The weather is amazing
  17. Yeah it's looking much better now Bit worried that I'll be too far west though. Same lol - need to stay up late just in case something happens.
  18. Some of us have seen absolutely fantastic storms tonight So jealous! Everything seems to have happened about 5 hours later than forecast; things were meant to get going by 5 pm and then have cleared Central Scotland by midnight, but it looks like storm are still firing even near Liverpool! There's an interesting bundle of weak storms moving into the Dumfries area now. Maybe these will intensify as they move through Scotland? Not sure though as most CAPE will be gone now.
  19. Wow, that storm near Darlington looks very severe. Wouldn't be surprised if a tornado forms - looking out carefully for any signs of a hook.
  20. Hmm that area of rain in the Irish Sea is really starting to intensify. Not electrified yet, apart from a few trailing showers off the Lancashire coast.
  21. Ah thanks for the explanation! Is it actually possible for stratus clouds to transition into Cbs? Would be very interesting if that happened.
  22. Nice spot. Maybe that area of rain is finally intensifying? Not all hope is lost
  23. What is preventing that area of rain just coming into Southwestern Scotland from intensifying?? There's a huge amount of CAPE, a decent trigger, a large(ish) amount of wind shear and very high dewpoints. Don't understand it at all!?
  24. Definitely true for Northern and Central England, although for us in Central/Southern Scotland, these events are incredibly rare. Last similar one was in May 2006 , but that delivered the goods. Yeah it is really interesting. Not going to give up all hope for today (just 99% of it )
