  2. Nice few days into the weekend for everyone, then all change as of Sunday. A sharp and southward projecting upper trough drives a weak Icelandic low down the Wrn side of the UK before the upper trough cuts off and leaves a complex surface low situation, which the globals see wallowing around through next week. This puts a plume of Biscay/Continental air up the UK, with widespread precip between the 5 and 10oC isotherms at 850mb - some of this may be convective, though most will be smeared murk and downstream effects of Continental convection. Nevertheless, some periods of warm sector thermodynamic convection likely given the ascent provided by the jet persistently rounding the base of what becomes a cut-off upper low. Some hints of a Continental heat low generated from Benelux/Germany and drawn NWwd over the UK later in the period.

Either way, some flooding concerns given much higher PW values than we've seen so far creating heavy rain rates, though on the plus side temps hovering around 20oC for most away from the far W.

  3. For the past three years SkyWarn UK has sent a small team out to the States to assist with the tracking and notification/warning of severe or potentially severe weather.  Of course to do this we have to chase storms  even though we're not primarily a stormchasing organisation. We do this under the banner of SIStERS which is an acronym for SkyWarn International Storm Emergency Responders.
SIStERS1 was in 2012, SIStERS2 in 2013 and this year SIStERS3 will be flying out to Dallas on the 19th May.

If you are interested in following us then we will be blogging and if all goes well will also be on Ustream.  You will also be able to follow our progress (or lack of!) on GR3.

Further details will be posted on our blog on the run-up to the 19th May and of course we will be updating at least once a day together with pics and vids.  You can sign up for email alerts each time we update our blog by clicking on the follow link on the bottom right hand corner of the page.  The blog can be found here  http://membership853.wordpress.com/2014/04/

Here's hoping for an active 2 weeks! :drinks:

SKYWARN UK HAS ISSUED A WARNING FOR PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SEVERE WEATHER AS FOLLOWS:

WIDESPREAD, DAMAGING, AND POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS WIND GUSTS

    GWYNEDD

    ANGLESEY

    CONWY

    DEESIDE

    FLINTSHIRE

    MERSEYSIDE

    NORTH YORK MOORS

IN EFFECT FROM 1600UTC UNTIL 2200UTC

PLEASE REFER TO WATCH #012 AND WARNING #013 FOR SYNOPSIS

    DISCUSSION:

THERE IS GOOD MODEL AND PARTNER AGENCY CONFIDENCE IN THE LIKELIHOOD OF A PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS PERIOD OF SEVERE WEATHER DURING WEDNESDAY. AS THE LOW REACHES PEAK INTENSITY CROSSING THE IRISH SEA, MODEL GUIDANCE SUGGESTS MEAN WIND SPEEDS OF ABOVE 60MPH MAY BE ACHEIVED, WITH GUSTS POSSIBLY ABOVE 90MPH, FROM AROUND 1600UTC ONWARDS FOR COASTAL AREAS. NORTH WALES AND WESTERN PARTS OF NORTHERN ENGLAND MAY BE EXPOSED TO GUSTS NEAR 90MPH ESPECIALLY OVER SNOWDONIA, THE PENNINES AND YORKSHIRE DALES. THESE WINDS WILL BE DAMAGING, AS SUCH DIRECT OBSERVATION IS NOT ADVISED. PLEASE MONITOR WEATHER AND TRAVEL INFO AS NECESSARY.

  5. XCW wind map doesnt show that many strong winds inland, only gusting at around 45mph for much of the day on Saturday. Looks like all of the worst winds are going to stay way out west of here where they will be 60-80mph. If this is the case then this storm will be quite a bit weaker than the one we had on Wednesday as a result of the winds not really penetrating that much inland. Not shure about the accuracy of the site though as I have looked at it many times before on windy spells and found it to have the predictions either way over done or under done.

XC take their data from GFS
  6. Here is the link to the press complaints comission: http://www.pcc.org.uk/complaints/makingacomplaint.html If enough people complain then hopefully something will be done about these scaremongering charletons... enough is enough now. Not amusing anymore!

Sadly they are not regulated by the IPCC - see reply from them below:Thank you for making a complaint to the Press Complaints Commission about the Daily Express. The PCC formally considers complaints about the vast majority of UK newspapers and magazines, provided that they subscribe to the system of self-regulation independently overseen by the PCC.Northern & Shell – the publishers of the Daily Express – do not currently subscribe to the system of self-regulation independently overseen by the PCC. The publication does not therefore fall under the Commission’s jurisdiction and, as such, we are unable to take forward your concerns in this matter. In the circumstances, you may wish to complain directly to the publication.
