Hee hee, but he never replies backI think if you follow Mr Rao's Tweets, you'll get an idea of where he stands on this Winter..... https://twitter.com/ExpressNathan I don't do Twitter so can't respond to him (but look at those that have!), maybe I'll compose a nicely worded Q and A e-mail later. I see you responded on Twitter!

As their headlines seem to have got more and more sensationalistic (is that a word lol) day by day, the only one now left to them is "Winter to last forever"

That's the 925 winds Matty, not the surface winds. Gusts generally in the region 45-50mph inland, maybe a tad higher on coastsLooks like a large area of England are going to see a swathe of gusts from 60-70mph tomorrow evening and night.
Good consensus now between the major models.
Appears the first swathe of high winds will just affect parts of the southern and south-western coastal parts of Ireland at first but the wrap-around occlusion will bring a large increase in wind-speeds elsewhere by evening.

Not at all Tamara, all local govt planners share their contingency plans.Wow - you must be very high up then to make such a qualified bureaucratic rebuttal

As I have many contacts in local govt I checked this out with Croydon council. They did have their normal emergency planning for winter meeting this week. This is the meeting all councils tend to have at this time of year to ensure they have contingency plans in place for any adverse winter weather. Nothing sinister about it at all.Hi Coast, This emergency meeting is a lot different to the other years.

Hi there SE gang, hope you are all well with blessings.
Just to inform you that Croydon Council are prepared with full salt stocks with gritters primed and ready. An emergency meeting with the councils emergency planning team is being co-ordinated to discuss potential severe/adverse conditions.
Bit early for that isn't it - nothing on the cards for the immediate future

Unbroken sunshine since 11am, not a cloud in the sky and high of 25c

So far its been no where near as bad as forecast looks like Scotland took the brunt and the storm eased significant as its moved into England
50mph gusts were forecast for wide parts of the UK by the beeb last night has anyone got close to that?
Highest gust here on Norfolk coast 44mph at 3pm, however that might change when that squall line comes through, although it looks like it's breaking up

Love that it now scales well on my iPad, no need for expensive apps now Paul

They're back;
I'm sure you'll be pleased to know those are harmless hoverflies not wasps

Morning, cloud at 7/8 and it's DRIZZLING! Such faint drizzle you can feel it on your skin but can't see it.
-
Yup 14c and foggy!I suspect the sun will blitz most of that soon, looks chilly on the Norfolk coast though.

Ben watching on KFOR. This has easily got to be EF5, the devastation is unbelievable. Was on the ground for over half an hour. Much as I want to chase next year, I never want to see anything like this in a populated area. I was actually crying watching it.
-
I guess that you're not in the the UK then Mr +++Thunderstorm+++ Certainly nothing that severe in the UK recently. Where are you?

Been following him on twitter since he went up to the ISS. He's been truly inspirational and I'll miss his photographs and vids. He's going to be a hard act to follow.

Lava fountains from the New SE crater (Etna Trekking webcam)The 13th New SE crater paroxysm is occurring this evening. Tall lava fountains rise from the central vent of the cone, and a lava flow has rapidly descended the slope into Valle del Bove. A dense tephra plume is rising several kilometers above the volcano and drifting to the NE where ash- and lapilli fall is occurring.
hi candice
this is a new crater so i would assume there must be some concern re this potential of this
problem is with this
if you put tourism before safety there could be heads rolling
remember what happened to the scientists who did not predict the previous earthquake recently
we will see what happens with this
This new crater formed in February, whilst it is periodically chucking out lava and lapilli it's a good thing. It's when it stops I would worry.

Mount Etna burst into life once more at the weekend as it shot lava, ash and smoke hundreds of feet into the air. Residents had been warned about the imminent eruption as grey smoke has been seen rising from the volcano for days. On Saturday, red hot lava was spat into the air as the volcano violently erupted once more. It is the thirteenth time Etna has erupted this year. Such is the scale of the activity that concerned residents have called on the Government to introduce a state of emergency. Experts said the latest activity posed no risk to local residents or towns. Stefano Gresta, president of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, said it was 'very spectacular, but not risky', according to youreporternews.it.
The airport was only briefly closed and the eruption caused very little disruption. The huge burst on Saturday could be seen by miles around and witnessed by residents of Catania and Taormina. Ash was sent flying down Etna's slopes and smoke rose more than 3,000ft into the air. Locals said the latest eruption is the most 'intense' of the year so far. The eruptions ended shortly before midnight on Saturday, although further bursts of activity were recorded yesterday. A series of minor earthquakes, measuring up to 2.55 on the Richter scale were also recorded. Earlier this month, mayors of towns surrounding the volcano called for 'urgent' government action. In a joint statement, the politicians said they wanted a state of emergency to be declared. Mount Etna is Europe's tallest active volcano. After past explosions, authorities in Sicily have been forced to build dams or dig ditches to divert lava away from people's homes.

I was actually on Etna the Saturday before (20th) when it erupted for the 12th time this year. Sure there was lots of ash, smoke and rumbling and I did get a bit dirty! But, can't see why a state of emergency would be declared. The roads remained open, albeit covered with ash - even down to sea level where the main Catania-Messina motorway runs. They are heavily dependent on tourism and a state of emergency would no doubt keep the tourists away.

Etna looks like it's busy again on the web cams http://www.guide-etna.com/webcam/
They had to close Catania Airport overnight - am flying out there next week and hope to see some "action" - from the volcano that is!

Gutted.com. It was your posts which got me interested n teleconnective forecasting. You'll be a great loss to NW but really pleased for you in that the work you've done is being recognised on a multi-national scale. Good luck!

One man's/woman's mild is another man's cold! If, as I think will happen, the cold will start to "relax" in the coming week it certainly won't be mild but 1c with the windchill making it -7c yesterday and 7c with no windchill next Tuesday - that's a 14c perceived difference - it's going to feel pretty mild! I have to say I get really fed up looking at the MO thread only to see the usual gang in there going on about snowmageddon. If anyone "dares" to post a slightly less cold chart then they get jumped on by people who seem to want to be buried up to their necks in snow 365 days of the year.
I spend quite a lot of my time studying charts, weather patterns etc and am totally fascinated by the synoptics that have made the last 6 weeks almost totally easterly-dominated but I daren't post anything in the MO thread which doesn't pay homage to the gods of snow because I know it'll just get derided.
My own preference is for hot, sultry summer days, with convective evenings but I don't look for that type of weather in every chart all year round.
Oh, and another thing ............................................................
Why oh why don't some of these people realise, the models don't actually MAKE the weather!
Phew! Rant over, quite enjoyed that.

Despite the radar echoes over West Norfolk for the last four hours, absolutely nothing has fallen out of the sky. At the moment the air is very dry, guess it's evaporating before it gets to the ground.
