Hey Coast another coastal thunderstom here in Eastbourne atm, although pretty small but with better thunder! Hopefully some more later. Had a headache last half hour so kept looking out and sure enough!

Been woken up by a very active cell in Eastbourne wuth frequent lightning and thunder - rain has started. God some of these bangs are loud but short! Its more like a late summer storm....thanks so much! This is amazing the thunder is strange sounded like a half shot gun! What a corker

Just had a nice proper thundery shower here in Eastbourne - got the shopping home in time! Although its night I got the sense something was coming...couple of lightning strikes...embedded hail...heavy rain and strong gusts under the shower. A taste of tomorrow?

Exciting stuff - always love a good squall. This one has an impressive ribbon like quality about it (if you match up the intense prep areas from the radar). Seems that the more intense areas are much wider the further north you go, so the land features (hills and mountains must affect it?) Hope that one of these areas passes close to me in the early hours - its bound to wake me! Gusty winds here ahead of the front - a few hours yet.

That first video does sort of confirm what I saw out to sea at Eastbourne (and in one of my photos) of a darker area forming the gust front, which must've rapidly developed as it moved up the coastline...looks immense - great footage! I'm so glad I went out and watched this one, even tho it got way better up the coast once it moved through. Watching the second video reminds me exactly of the rain falling and me taking shelter near the Wish Tower! Most of the online ITV footage has gone because of the local news changes early this year :lol:

I would have to agree with Neil - this defintely had supercell characteristics. Thanks for posting the footage Neil. There was more TV footage from South East Today taken after the storm which did show it behind some houses - a large white wall cloud with very dark base moving off (just like the bottom of a supercell) As some of you may know I watched this storm on Eastbourne seafront that very day as it developed and moved up the Channel - I had seen this lone and well defined fibrous anvil popping up from the W/SW and decided to watch this one. I have taken many photos - the anvil was extraordinary...it spread across the whole sky and just kept larger. I have posted these before but its probably a pain to search and I suppose some newbies might like it. INCOMING ANVIL - as seen looking towards Eastbourne Bandstand OVERHEAD ANVIL - this was crawling right overhead...had to really look up and crane my neck for this shot STORM DESCENDS - still staying out to sea but plenty of rain! FORMING GUST FRONT? - this darker area rushed along the sea and I'm pretty sure this area was responsible for the action in Hastings and Fairlight (not a good photo) STORM OVER HASTINGS - my avatar...this produced once of the most interesting after storm sky for quite sometime...had strange cloud formations and varied colours STORM CLEARS & STRANGE CLOUD - once the storm had moved through a strange little cloud moved in very quickly over the cliffs (moisture?)...I have video of this (see attachment) and the wind was quite strong! Some proper forked lightning in the Channel - not much thunder but skies give the game away as soon as you look at it! Nice classic looking summer thunderstorms :-)

Yes you can mess Windows up a little bit, but mainly the chance of a close lightning strike which could cause a surge in electricity and you'd be waving goodbye to your computer and other devices connected to the mains. A PSU in a PC can take a certain amount of pain but if it blows it will usually take the motherboard with it (although some quality supplies have better internal safeguards) A surge protector can protect you from certain spikes / noises / interference but NOT a lightning strike (either direct or close)... Last year a friend of mine lost some electrical devices during a storm when lightning struck a few doors down...it blew a TV, router and video - all connected to mains and even with a surge protector!

Starting to kick off here in Eastbourne = storm is weird tho...goes all quiet winds get up (downdrafts) then no lightning...mins later it starts again and its closer

You could be right - there was some strange towering cumulus cloud coming off the sea and then a shift in wind direction and temperature a little while ago. I didn't see any elevated lightning after that.

Just got off the seafront as its all died down for me. Seems I was observing lightning from possible one/two small rogue cells just ahead of the main area...had a very nice cool downdraft from the south as it passed over with strong winds...plenty of cloud flashes - they are quite active. Could see a line of anvil tops in the night of the main MCS heading NW...more better stuff later so it better wake me up!

Latest radar is more encouraging - I'm off to watch the sea!!!! have fun guys!

Evening Coast - I tend to agree...although I wouldn't rule out that area just to the lower right of the main lot heading towards IOW/Hampshire...

Would I be right in saying that if that cold front in the west hadn't been 6-8 hours behind, then that the current Northern France storms crossing the Channel (possible W Sussex/Hampshire landfall?) could've hit me straight on...they seem to be veering NW and there is a bit of a gap between them with the cells up the Dover Straight nudging into East Kent...

Exciting stuff...and its very close.... Maybe tricky to get an exact movement on these cells due to the rotation of the 'heat Low'...e.g. swinging round...may have to wonder and look out to sea for any light displays soon! :-)

Really nice line going up and its still developing over France - anyone under that maybe under it for a while...would love something like this as we've had not much so far, but I guess tommorow may bring the goods. Nice photos.

Well that was quick - all quiet now. I think I shall retire now for the evening. Hope this stuff moving through can set off more cells inland and that storm staved places get a look in...

Just had to run back from seafront - brief downpour...much better than earlier - better lightning and thunder (little more frequent). Large drop rain is on and off. Still have my headache. BOOOOMMM!

I actually knew this storm was coming straight for me as the radar looked impressive and went onto the seafront to watch it some in. I had no idea how decent this storm would be as it moved further along the coast. I have previously uploaded a photo or two of the approaching anvil as seen in its own thread...you'll find most of the photos I took with my camera phone below. The anvil was very impressive - I remember it being overheard and it seemed huge. For me this was probably a once in a lifetime storm - it didn't seem that bad at first as its outer edge made landfall on Eastbourne seafront with a who load of rain. However I do remember a suspicious darker area about a mile out racing up the sea (you can see this in the bottom of photo number 5). What was strange was the change in air behind the storm and a eerie sea mist quickly moving in. The previous time a possible Supercell crossed my area was May 2003 - that did produce a tornado and some very large unusual hail...I was driving and it was amazing see all these hedges and trees stripped of leaves and twigs Thanks for posted that vid and to Nick for those radar images

Excellent guys...fantastic photos...couldn't make it to Newhaven (what a good idea!) as I don't have transport and had to work! Although I did go down Eastbourne seafront just before high tide and the sea was right up to the shored up defences...a few pebbles thrown onto the prom east of the Pier - that's it....I miss the days when it used to hit the Bandstand

I wish they wouldn't use the term mini-tornadoes...I just read the ticker on there and came here asap... Its more likely to be severe gusts of wind associated with that rain front (squall?) as it moves through...must've taken place this morning between 0800-1000am as it exited Eastern England. Its sunny and breezy here now... I was woken up at 8.20am by the sound of very strong gusts of wind - probably gale force gusts for about 15 mins...but thought nothing of it. Tornado like conditions could've been very localised whereas everywhere else probably had strong gusts and the BBC are saying 'damage has been caused by a series of mini-tornadoes' - unlikely I don't believe it! Seagulls go ape and winds are very strong! YouTube (also used on BBC South East Today) :huh: I'm gobsmacked and I still keep talking about it :o

Incredible torrential bursts have just started in Eastbourne - looks like some new developments on the back edge of the rain band. Its been raining almost non-stop here for nearly 10 hours...

I've been woken up by fresh lightning and thunder - its incredible stuff guys really bright. About 1 strike every few mins...thunder has been amazing. The radar is impressive (if a little scary) and it hasn't stop raining since 2230! Rain is heavy and steady....the main mass hasn't even made it here yet!
