  2. chins up COLDIES / LAMP POST WATCHERS ETC i think we are in for an interesting 6 months . i am not forecasting a long harsh winter, but iv just had a look over the last couple of days at the northern hemis , interesting , some good night time lows , a good bit of early cold over far north and n/e of canada . when we had those mild mush years , late 80s till aprox 2008 . not much was happening in the far north during autumn , just spent 12 days in scotland and northern england sun 9th oct / sat 22nd oct , everything but the kitchen sink ,frost heavy rain , on the wed 12th oct in western scotland looking over to sky it was like being in greece , thurs and friday in sky was typical autumn , john o groats a bit windy , on the monday we travelled down to perth , chasing a weather front , we caught up with it a couple of hours before CAIRNGORMS we stoped the car whilst pretty high up ,had our hourly fag , it was very heavy rain ,within 2 min it turned sleety then wet snow ,we drove on for about 2 /3minutes and it started raining again .drove from perth to clamis on tue , and top of cairngorms snow covered , an early christmas present for me ,is the writing on the wall or will that swear word arrive soon .BAR---T AND ASSOCIATED LOW S/W OF ICELAND , IF IT IS GOING TO ARRIVE I HOPE ITS SOON , AND NOT IN OUR WINTER , LET IT COME QUICK AND GO QUICK M MY MOTH IN LAW AS JUST PHONED UP ABOUT ALL THE SNOW IN AMERICA , HAVE NOT WATCHED NEWS TODAY, AND COMP TOO SLOW , I HOPE WE ALL GET WHAT WE WANT ,CHEERS
  3. just a quicky . just enjoyed 13 days of touring uk . sun 9th oct to friday 21 st oct . mostly scotland . wed 12th oct we travelled up west coast of scotland wester ross and the view across to sky was amazing , it was very warm ,blue sky blue sea . thurs friday was spent on sky ,overcast windy sat and sunday north of scotland , fantastic waves surfers .on monday we travelled down to perth ,wewent from heavy rain to SNOW yes SNOW . but it was very brief and almost sleet this was round about devils elbow mid afternoon , the following morning we drove to clamis castle . and in the distance on the high mountains we could see the snow topped peaks . on the way back we stopped at scarborough 2 days we had a hail shower . all in all weatherwise very interesting ,cheers legritter somerset
  4. sun came out here about 1 30 pm ish ,we have a great big gurt ANTS GATHERING ON OUR PATIO , now that must be a good sign .just hoping tonights activity can kick in a little further east , but with all of us seeing some good activity for the rest of the week . just got a sneaky feeling things could be upgraded by tomorrow ,of course this is a changing situation as more atmospheric data is added . it would be nice to see most of the action during late evening , any cheers for now LEGRITTER NORTH SOMERSET . NEWS WEATHER JUST SAID COULD BE SOME LOCAL DOWNPOURS ,
  5. lets hope we all see something next week . with current set up i think we are going to have to wait till late sun charts before we get a 50,percent idea on areas most prone . it could be a case of local home grown beasts on tuesday , with french inports late tues wed . a low could form and stall , somewhere over southern counties later . there could be severall e locations that get a good hit , but we are talking about 50,000 sq miles with this being a possibility at the moment , i hope all those that have missed out so far this year , get a good hammering . i just hate this damp drab crabby , grey blanket , BRING ON THE BRANDSTORMS . REGARDS LEGRITTER MENDIPS .

  9. evening all , just came in from patio , i only smoke outdoors , been sat reading with snow light on ,. 500 watt halogen light i watch those snow flakes fall by . whats going on i had a thick coat on ,its drizzly a little and cold . 3 weeks ago i was sat out in a tea shirt . i am pretty sure we will get some realy high temp this summer but i it will be a mixed one . i think whats being forecast in the media and on here will happen ,, but i think the computers are seeing what will happen about a week from now ,lasting about 2 ,3 weeks ,beyond that , it could go anyway . cheers all , legritter , north summerset .
  10. i am not sure if i am posting this right but thanks to PHELPSY AND JANE LOUISE FOR ANSWERING MY QUESTION , IM NEWISH TO COMPUTER . I EXPECT YOUR MAMMATUS CLOUD WAS THE LEFTOVERS OF THUNDER ACTIVITY FURTHER SOUTH , JUST DOWN DRAUGHTS , TOMORROW COULD BE INTERESTING FOR GLOS AREA , ESPECIALLY IF TEMP OVERNIGHT DROPS , THEN SUN POPS OUT PLUS TROUGH PLUS A BIT OF LIFT , AND YOU ARE NEARER THE LOW PRESSURE . BEST OF LUCK ,
  11. even all . we had some good lightning on fri night in north somerset , a couple of forks and some sheet lightning but most of it was out over bristol channel . last night one rumble about 4am this morning when my wife came home from work . i did not expect anything exciting today . started my wifes food about 5 30 pm today , sky almost clear , i had back door open because our smoke alarm is delicate ,about 5 20 pm our garden furniture , light plastic took off,it then went quiet till about 6 20 pm . the wind blew up very gusty ,within 2 min it was sheeting it down with rain after about 5 min the rain eased and small hail started for about a couple of mins or so . it then chucked it down with rain again for 10 min but with brilliant sunshine , we must have been on the edge of the storm . therefollowed a bright rainbow , and to my right , a brilliant flash followed by severall loud rumbles .whilst all this was going on our local perigrin must have been out hunting , it returned with a kill just as the storm moved away towards the north east . mother nature is so amazing . any body about in glos area , i noticed about half an hour or so the bright colours moved through your area , any body further n east experiance any thing of note .i only use rain today so i am limited , plus my computer is a cart horse , when i get a new comp i will get NW radar . regards legritter n somerset
  12. evening all .had about 15 mins of steady mod heavy rain about 20mins ago .im hoping that something interesting could brew up after say 1am sun morning . the front out to the west is starting to move in closer . i havent been active for a while ,a few problems .im just hoping for several overhead bolts plus some good flashes plus 25 mm rain in one hour , perhaps that will make up for jan and feb . cheers legritter winscombe north somerset .
  13. i brewed a nice cuppa about 3pm , sat in my summer house and watched the heavens getting darker and darker . a nice sharp shower of medium hail ,then steady rain for 5min .my mother inlaw over at high littleton heard thunder at 3 30 . certainly more interesting than mild mush . could be some good action tomorrow morning . could be a colourfull sunrise . regards all .
  14. i had the same problem here in winscombe , mullender 83 , had to clear a path for the wife . i built the wife a snowman and put her val flowers on top . there was a halo around moon about 6.30 pm tonight .lets hope that cold block to our ne wins out .
  15. as an EX fellow of R M SOCIETY i am very interested in contrails . i wish i had kept a log of the times i have observed , sometimes a big proportion of the sky covered . i can remember about 4 yrs ago probably late spring just after dawn when the north american traffic starts to pass over , i counted aprox 25 30 contrails . i had just been star gazing , and i can vouch for the sky being completely clear . but what amazed me was after an hour or so these con trails spread out covering a big percentage of the sky , also what appeared like small clouds turrets and other shapes formed either above or mixed in with these contrails . odviously it all depends on upper level winds ,temp etc etc elevation of sun . but this would make a good and interesting study ,SO COUNT ME IN . I QUITE OFTEN SEE HIGH LEVEL JETS FLYING into THEIR OWN SHADOW WHEN THE SUN IS AT THE CORRECT ANGLE ,i am refering to the shadow of the contrail . i wonder if a jet making a DISTRAIL would affect things ,after all nature as produced that cloud , and along comes MR LONG HAUL AND BURNS A PATH THROUGH ALL THAT MOISTURE . all very interesting . regards LEGRITTER WINSCOMBE .
  16. just had a look around different weather sites and yes it does look about 50 50 for a cold shot next week . fridays charts i think will give us a better idea .i wonder if someone can help me out on an astronomy question . i posted the question in one of the science forums last week , but it disapeared or was removed .please could someone tell me which forum to post it in .i will be back on line mid even . regards
  17. what a mistaka to maka ,idid mean to say BREST , thanks BRISTLE BOY for pointing that one out . also thanks to WEATHER SHIP for posting that chart . still learning computer plus keyboard . it is good for our hobby to have all this information at our fingertips .i know i could reply to each poster personally but knowing my luck i will leave that untill im sure of what im doing . .fantastic sunset tonight ,watched the starlings heading back to their roost this afternoon ,heading about SOUTH OF SE , about a quarter of a mile due west of their flight path out this morning .i wonder how many will make it till tomorrow , anyhow thats nature .
  18. morning all ,its looking interesting for next week .had a good look at the charts and its looking like some knife edge events , but at the moment they could be almost anywhere . the one im hoping for is a good old fashioned frontal event . 24hrs before front arrives , a nice halo around moon ,the following day wind picking up . snow arriving about 8pm ,the first 8 hrs we get 20cms at minus 1c . then 8hrs at 3cm an hour at minus 3 , but seriously feb 18 ,19th 1978 me and my Ist wife tried to travel from bristol to taunton on the sunday morn ,we turned back it was like a white hell ,that was a low moving s e ,from sw ireland to breast peninsula , the se wind tapped into some cold surface air over the continent .the rest of that winter and before was normal , of course the following winter 78 ,79 , was a beauty .dont give up , still time left .im of to weston to have a look at pier tomorrow , its supposed to be the best day of the week . regards legritter .
  19. i hope this winter does not just fizzle out , i am hoping for atleast a good frontal event ,15 cms snow at minus 2c , ave wind speed 40miles an hour ,over 8 hrs . to affect all of our region . still plenty of time left.still cold out now , dogs bowl frozen over , jack daws sat next to chimneys giving of heat ,my wifes garden nome all cracked up , 4 pots in garden all broke ,plastic watering can disinterated ,i will get told off for that thats the second one i,v ruined . looking at charts it could be interesting if that cold in higher latitudes pays us a visit ,regards legritter .
  20. anybody about , what a difference 24 hrs makes ,last night rain ,tonight cold but great moon.lets get some high level clouds with a few halos about , of course with the high in the right position and the frontal cloud coming up from the sw .i can remember the halo before the 1982 heavy snow . anyhow will check back in about an hour .cheers.
  21. hi ,all .weather 5 ,7 days ahead could be on a knife edge .looking at different weather sites they all have a different angle on weekends weather. computer models still big differences every new output . a good plunge of cold air expected too the east of us . pressure expected to fall over med soon .at the moment if your a cold weather fan like me im going to keep my eyes to the south for a pres fa ll.had a slight frost this morning about 8 .15 .local gritters in the yard are on the move .just watching sun set over quantocks .theres a tiny bit of cumulus probably thrown up from bridgewater bay or bris chan ,iv watched out for the green flash on hundreds of occasions but never been lucky .iv seen the blue flash whilst out with my wife ,driving . i just tell her to slow down .anyhow i hope we all get our favourite weather over the coming weeks .
  22. hi ,sat up in my damp summer house today .watched the birds feeding in the heavy rain .i expect they are making up for the leaner times of the past. our local perigrin was facing off with the ravens .just had a look at the charts out to 240 hrs there are possibilities , lets hope something comes for all of us .if anyone interested there are some good web cams over in yellow knife and lake winnipeg , you may occasionaly catch the local wildlife ,regards legritter ,winscombe.
