  1. There we go, as expected, one sunny day of 23c on wednesday, then thursday forecast to be 17c light rain, while elsewhere is 23-28c, sums up the summer well
  2. forecast 23c, It will be cloudy./ drizzly / damp / and about 18c max, like all the other heatwave days here this summer except one
  3. some very impressive speeds there, must be the coast effect again, just managed one gust of 30mph here, winds mainly 5-15mph, the consistency of the speeds is very noticeable!
  4. Sorry i have to disagree with that, unless you purely mean night minima. 1st - 5th was sunny with temperature between 19-22c, with 24-26c widely on the 4th 10th - 14th sunny, temps 19-21c 23rd - 27th unbroken sunshine everyday temps 20-23c 29th - 31st sunny, 21c each day Now with a mean max of around 20c in such a cool month nationwide the lake district did pretty well, both june and august were well below average on the maximums Thats 3 spells of warm sunny weather lasting 5 days, although if you weren't here for the first half you missed 2 of the 3,
  5. In this part of the Lakes its down to 4c at Lorton, approaching 5c here, ground frost likely in the valley bottoms i would say.
  6. My ideal winter would be. . . December First Half - dry, sunny, frost by night Second Half - very snowy for the run up to Christmas, then post Christmas blue skies and deep cold. January First Half - continuation of the deep cold, similar to January 2010 Second half - snow and cold continues, a very cold January overall February First Half - Atlantic fronts push into the UK, at first some huge snow falls and deep drifts in blizzard conditions, mild eventually wins, thaw and rain. Second Half - High pressure, mild and sunny by day, frost by night
  7. Whats the device your using to record the wind speed? Shows what a difference the Cumbria coast makes, its been windy here, but just 20-40mph gusts, looked very rough out west.
  8. How about this for an idea of how cold December 2010 was in Cumbria, At Newton rigg, Penrith, it was the Coldest MONTH ever with a mean of -2.8c beating the previous coldest ever month january 1940 with a mean of -1.9c, so almost 1c colder. The 63's means were -1.1c and -1.3c According to the Cumbria Weather Report this coldest ever month was across the whole of North and East Cumbria
  9. no a winters tale is right http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/climate/uk/datasets/Tmean/date/Scotland.txt
  10. Breaking the summer down June here was very cool and dry with a max of 23.4c and only 3 days above 20c, many days of 13c/14c/15c mean max nearly 2c below average, and sunshine below average. 2/10 July - Very sunny and very few days of rain, but what fell totaled up to average, temps slightly below average, Max 24.9c, 12 days above 20c 7/10 August - Horrendous - wet, dull, cold, as bad as August 2008, worse than 2009 and 1993, almost as bad as 1985, 2c below average, rainfall 130%, only 4 sunny days, sunshine around 50%, Max just 20.0c the one and only day of 20c 0/10 Overall then Summer 2011 scores 3/10 - a very cool summer, with a complete lack of warmth, worse than last year, but best july since 2006
  11. Another terrible August here making it 6 in a row since a half decent one never mind a good one, Maximum temperatures almost 2c below average, rainfall at 125% of the average and days of rain also above average. Sunshine has also been well well below average, probably around 100 hours this month compared to the 185 hours average, so very very dull, with just 3 - 4 sunny days The Max this month is 20.0c, with only 4 days reaching the average. Very similar to August 2008, not as wet as 2009 and not as cool as 1985, but it surely up there with the worst Augusts of recent times a run of Augusts like that of 95, 96, and 97 are unimaginable now after this dire dire run from 2006-2011, when will it end?
  12. I know location plays a big factor but i found January 2011 a very enjoyable month, there were a couple of snow days early on, but then there was that spell late on that gave some very frosty weather, with deep cold mornings of -5c to -7c, very hard frosts and some cracking sunrises, then barely above freezing all day with blue skys, personally some of my favourite winter weather. The December cold was unreal at times, and i dont think we will see anything similar anytime soon, however, as you say, a few short doses of cold / frost / snow would be nice.
  13. Sunshine figures are lacking in Cumbria, but from what i have found, Penrith so far has had 48 hours this month, compared to august 2008 which had 95 hours in that area. So its going to be a close contest if this weather continues. My location is much sunnier than that part of Cumbria, but here there's only been a few sunny days this month so i doubt here has much more than that value and this August has felt very dull and cold
  14. An absolutely dire start to August here, already mounting an assault to knock August 1985 off the top of coolest, wettest dullest ever etc.. never mind the run of poor julys, the run of bad augusts is much worse. July was reasonable here, but overall this summer has been utter crap the worst thing has been the lack of heat and how boring it has been. even 2009 had a heatwave week at the end of june and first 2 days of july, where it hit 30c in this area. haven't even hit 25c this summer which is appauling
  15. What really annoys me is for the past 3 days, each day the bbc / met office have predicted 21c/22c and sunny intervals for the next day, but then on that day on the 9am update it changes to light rain, 18c, which of course has been correct
  16. Assuming the last 3 days of July will be decent, but nothing outstanding, how has July rated in your area? For me, its the best since 2006, as theres been average rainfall, below average days of rain, average temperatures and above average sunshine, whereas the last 4 here were all pretty terrible. Obviously perceptions of the last 4 julys will also vary with location.
  17. 1985 was by far the most horrendous summer in this area, much more so than any other of the 80's or 2007/8/9 by a mile, it would be interesting to see what peoples perceptions of 1985 were like in other parts of the country
  18. Going for the record low July Max today ( in recent times) for this area. July 1986 holds it at 13.5c, then the next worst is 14.4c in 2007. currently 12.8c at nearly 1 o clock, no sign of a temp increase or the low cloud clearing. this has made the worst day of july so far quite interesting!
  19. I think the problem is that the UK does fairly regularly get a settled warm summer month, and then every few years a very decent summer, but people are hoping each year, that that year is 'the one', so this summer we were hoping for the next 1995, 1976 etc, and next year will be exactly the same. eventually it will occur again whether it be in 1 year or 20 years time, its just people expect each upcoming summer to be the next classic. and when one does occur then its expected to become the norm and the cycle continues, with our average summers becoming not good enough in peoples minds
  20. and here too, 9 of the 11 days have been mainly sunny, of which 5 were unbroken sunshine, and the other 2 cloudy and warm. only 15mm rain which fell over 2 nights. the last 4 julys have been disasters here, and this one has already beaten them, with max's of 19c-21c and one day 25c
  21. Exactly the same here, forecast 30-40mm of rain with a weather warning both today and yesterday. yesterday there was 1.4mm rain. today 0.0mm and practically sunny all day.
  22. Yes i must agree it hasnt been particularly wet yet, just 18mm here, however june 1991 had a mean max of 16.5c at keswick, heaven compared to what will likely turn out to be 13-14c here if the charts and metO outlook are anything to go by!
  23. Anyone for a sub 15 summer CET? where i am although temps have got to 13/14c for a few mins in sunny spells when the sun is strong, temps are mainly 10-12c during most of the day for the last week or so, and my june mean is plummeting to what it was at the end of march, april, and may. can see this continuing right thorugh july tbh, maybe even the whole summer
  24. Has anyone also seen PWS's extreme long range forecast? They are going for January and February 2012 to be 'Substantially colder than Average' with december 2011 to be slightly colder than average http://www.positiveweathersolutions.co.uk/UK-Eire---Frontier-Cast---Extreme-Long-Range.php
  25. Yes you were right in The Lakes there were Northerly winds to start the month with snow showers widely reported on the 4th, but high pressure mid-month gave light easterly winds and a warm sunny spell began on the 22nd, with Keswick reaching 24.1 and Ambleside 23.8 on the 30th
