  1. New York is actually slightly further south than we are in the UK.

    The sea around the East Coast of America is also alot warmer in summer than you would find over here (22-24c), just warm enough to carry a hurricane without it completely falling apart.

    In terms of your last quote, we have never been hit by a hurricane here in the UK. We have had storms with hurricane force winds but the methods of formation are completely different.

    I always thought it was roughly on the same latitude.

    So 1987 wasn't a hurricane as it was always made out to be?
