  1. Wind has now gone up to a Force 9 gusting 10. Very strong gusts now and far more frequent.

High tide isn't due for another 3 and a half hours yet but looking at the web cam is far higher up the beach than should be.

A good cam as it gives the sound as well as video.

Yes having the sound up loud makes you feel as if you were there, and agree that water is really coming in fast.

  2. I was just having a closer look at the flood map which Mk posted on their web site and one thing which stands out around Windsor is the number of reservoirs which are in close proximity to the river.  I suppose they are topped up by the river however the problems will begin if the treatment works get flooded or the power goes down due to sub stations being effected. Whilst the Somerset levels have their problems the populated areas of London will pose a even more worry for all the agencies involved with this situation.

  3. Is that because they've raised the Thames Barrier and now the water can't get out?

Think of all those poor interior designers who have their show homes ruined.... ordinary people too of course. Never mind - all the politicians live in Notting HILL or Primrose HILL - they'll be fine.

I think it's down to a mixture of both, there is so much water coming down stream that the river is rising but also as it's a tidal river it will back up at high tide.  They can use the barrier to help stop the tide coming up the Thames however you still have the water coming down so at this stage it's probably a catch 22.

It will be interesting to see what happens after the COBRA meeting, will we see troops being sent in to evacuate people ect.

  4. Severe flood warnings coming in for the river thames

Yes Tinybill, I have never seen eleven severe flood warnings before on the EA Flood site before, and the words from one I think says it all, poor peoplePosted Image

Properties closest to the River Thames at Datchet, between Black Potts Bridge and Albert Bridge

River levels on the Thames are very high and still rising in the Datchet area. A Severe Flood Warning is now in force as river levels will continue to rise for at least 24 hours and are forecast to be higher than those experienced in 2003 on the Thames. Widespread property flooding is expected in the area and disruption to local infrastructure is possible. The Environment Agency and its partners will update this message as the situation changes.

    PS now risen to 16

  5. now i see on sky news  Thames valley  is in danger of  flooding this  week  Thames  is   in  full flood

Yes that is another reason COBRA meet yesterday as there is growing concern about the amount of water that will be passing down the Thames over the week. They are making sure that they protect water treatment and electricity sub station facilities which reminds me of a few years ago when they came very close to losing that power station somewhere which apart from the flooding would have a serious impact for many thousands of people.

Here in Bedford we have now had two dry days and it looks as though that could continue today and tomorrow or if it does rain it won't be on the scale of Thursday or Friday of last week. it makes you wonder what we would be doing if all that had fell as snowPosted Image

  6. Looking through the surface charts on e met office web site this morning, it looks as though after today although the wind maybe strong at times there are no more major features shown until the end of the week.  You can also see how the 528 line is off the south coast by Wednesday, hence the words wintry showers are used in the text forecast.

I suppose that this could all change by tonight.

  7. Yes a lot of wind around here last night (steady matron) although everything in the garden still looks OK and the gusts seems to have died away in the last hour although Xweather is still showing some high numbers on their animation for the past half an hour.

We have a temperature of 6.5c at the moment and a few spits and spots of rain although the showers seem to be running out of steam before they reach here, oh here's another strong gust going through.

I took delivery of a new 27' monitor yesterday and I must admit I never knew I could get so much open on a screen at oncePosted Image
