  1. ... indeed I rate August as one of the worse months of the year.

I suppose that month does have some good bits, including some intense blackberry picking (or do the blackberries come out more like September time?) but as you say, there are episodes in August which show Summer fading ....

I suppose it's a bit like having snow in March ... it isn't really counting towards anything and it's the thought that in a few weeks the warmth will be gone for another year.

  2. Unfortunate news? That's excellent news as far as I'm concerned!

As GMT is in synchronicity with the sun I would hardly call it infamous. If anything B.S.T is infamous as it's the tinkering with the clocks in spring to try and make the night go away which means we then have to tinker with them again in autumn to get back to GMT again, a quite ludicrous process which was introduced about 100 years ago so that agricultural workers could work long into what shoud have been the night in an effort to increase their productivity.

I may spearhead a campaign to remain on GMT throughout the year so that we all live by 'sun time' as nature intended.

    That's exactly what I was saying ...

  3. No one really needs light after 8:30pm so August is the time were it is noticed, not June.

Despite 'shorter' days after June 21st, the day only gets shorter by about an hour if that after the first month (until end of July).

It's far too early to be bothered about losing the light yet so calm down!

More unfortunate news half related though, plans to abolish the infamous GMT and stay on constant GMT+1 (BST) all year round have been scrapped for some reason and therefore we will still have to rewind our clocks by one hour in October, despite the fact it was expected to be abolished last year.

  4. "With winds mainly from the west or northwest, temperatures will probably be average or a little below for the time of year but there is a chance of some warmer spells, most likely in the south of the UK."

Good to hear this ... the 'chance of some warmer spells to the south' might be the early foundations to the possible late May/June warmth.

  5. I mean decay in the contryside. A hot day in June with everywhere bursting with colour has more appeal than a hot day in late August with the fields brown. I guess its the reminder that Autumn is fast approaching.

August is perhaps being a bit early though for your description ... late September is when your description of the countryside comes into full swing.

August is Summer ... no question about it ... you wouldn't say that you can see the early warnings that Spring is arriving when it's January.

  6. Pretty calm and cool here tonight,

not a lot of rain forecast for me until at least Sunday but then again no nothing of sunshine either ... just overcast.

I'm expecting quite a few showers though.

Temperatures massively struggling, mid double figures onwards are out of sight ... surprised if 10'c will be reached

  7. SE areas drought, but certainly not here, I thought todays rain was only meant for the north of this region, was heavy upto 11am, then again from 4pm

Yeah, unusual stuff - usually when there is a drought somewhere in the UK in means most of the UK is suffering from largely below average rainfall - but not in the North so it seems.

  8. Thursday and beyond is looking interesting with a good possible 17/18C here in tropical western cheshire and merseyside. But by friday the warmer air is almost entirely cut off, as temperatures drop to 10C and very mild. There may well not be any overnight frost by Thursday night, but Friday night into saturday could well see temperatures drop to or near freezing and in some places below freezing. So if your planning on shoving the plants outside, Thursday is for now just a one off, with near freezing temps Friday night

10'c is VERY mild? It's only a couple of degrees above average! Anyway let's see what happens

  9. When was the last time members had a proper thunderstorm? And I mean a proper thunderstorm overhead as opposed to a shower with the odd thunderclap now and then or one that just missed.

I reckon it was over 2 years ago here, I can't even recall when I last heard thunder, the last time I definitely saw ligthtning was at distance from late August last year from those cells in the Liverpool area.

We talk about the lack of snow but the lack of thunder let alone thunderstorms is even more stark

Had some good ones in 2010 on 17th May 2010 (early morning - woke everyone up!) and one around the 15th July which was a very big one

  10. 6.9'C

An average or warm start quickly leading to a touch cooler conditions with drier and more settled conditions with a wintry theme evident

A generally average 10-20th with a mix of cooler and warmer days with average rainfall with beautiful Spring conditions possible although perhaps some cooler days generating a wintry feel

An overall average - mild end.
