  1. No new gains apart from a large gain in North West China. Ice has grown again, and looking for some big snow increases when it gets close to North Russia. A refill of snow for Iceland and Norway would keep the map interesting, Norway has go from positive to normal on snow amount. Iceland has lost some snow but is still has positive amounts.
  2. 'cyclonic happiness' Is that a pixel in the middle of Romania I see? Romania got hit hard only 8 months ago its worth keeping on http://www.jurnalul....a-balea-55.html ....nearer home EGXU daily 1997 record broken by a third of an F http://weather.gladstonefamily.net/site/EGXU
  3. Norway and Iceland have positive amounts of snow, its getting interesting , Heading towards October will Norway keep that extra snow or add to it or it lose most of it because of the fact that its too early for it to stay? If Iceland and Norway add a good extra bit of snow soon how will that effect our exceptions of winter? Looking forward to finding out!
  4. With the lack of snow locked in around near Northern Canada and Northern Russia in this month in recent years due to I believe the lack of ice , my hope is that the North East Siberian positive snow anomaly does not disappear in the next 3-5 days or we could be into our first big Negative snow amount on the N.H. map which would be a little disappointing. Will have to keep an eye on the weather forecast in that area to see what is likely.
  5. Latest Cover 4days ago looking at the snow cover now compared to a years ago. Not a big difference But nice to see Iceland still whiter than last year.
  6. http://www.weatherhq...station/magadan http://weather.glads...y.net/site/UHMM at 174 meters reporting -10C at 0700 local time , your report http://www.ogimet.co...&day=19&hora=22 http://weather.glads....net/site/25808 of -13.2C 160 miles away at 708 meters is impressive Is it me or is it cold! 6 daily low records broke in France and Germany overnight. 4C due Saturday and below freezing in the Scotland. Too fresh for this time of year Brrr!
  7. ]For the Coldies fun and interest! ...Far eastern Siberian Town of Magadan UTC+12 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magadan has smashed through its 20th September low temp record with a -10c It is in the snow on the NOAA snow and ice chart so the first double whammy hit of cold and snow I believe.
  8. Here's an animation of the last 7 days data (the 13th isn't available for some reason though?) It's easy now to spot the 18th's increase cheers bftv
  9. Here's the latest picture of how the snow cover is doing. Red circles for were it could be doing better Blue circle for not quite as well as it was. I guess something had to give for us having snow in Scotland yesterday!
  10. I've noticed that after a summer of breaking heat records things have turned colder in the U.S. take the cold at International Falls Minnesota for example nearly -4.4C beating a daily record set in 1959 of 28.9F with a temp of 24.1F and twenty miles away in Emo Canada Google weather is showing -8C http://www.duluthnew...group/homepage/ LOW: BROKEN
  11. Thanks for the upload bftv ,talking of big images I say bring it on! it makes it clearer for seeing whats left of the ice no problem with big images tis the age of fast broadband, modern web browsers that zoom in and out with ease, I wish some chunky snow graphics left 1996 and improved. There are far bigger images out there and max single file upload size is 4MB Looking forward to seeing some excellent images on netweather this winter.
  12. Well I'm happy that answers my doubt that the open water will produce more snow there, others I know will not be so sure.
  13. I see the snow and its down on last year but still better overall than 2010 and a lot better for the date than 2009,2007,2005,2004,1999 I'm looking for a impressive fight back of ice and snow over the next 12 weeks
  14. Some charts to show the snows progress in the last 4 days then now then now >>>>>>>>>
  15. I'm starting to think that ice cover large or small is not the most important factor in snow making. This example would make the argument that it is important but you could find other examples were it is the other way round, so what to think? Ice pointing at snow http://climate.rutge...ay=284&ui_set=2 with negative amounts of snow surrounding it. I know that a lot of lake effect convection snow goes on in the huge lakes in the U.S. maybe it works different in Russia, Still learning, I had been under the understanding that the ice helps the snow. Again we will soon know the answer for this year.
  16. Here some snow, bit of Steingrims snow is still left in NW iceland just below the artic circle and at 465mts elevation
  17. I have to argee with you the snow buildup is fun to watch but is no big deal or of fundamental importance becuse after I had a good look at the different years of Northern Hemisphere snow buildup http://climate.rutge...ay=258&ui_set=2 I conclude that the different set ups look random and have no effect on the amount of snow we get in a winter. Other factors are playing a much more important role. I'm a weather hobby newbie but it looks like it takes about 10 days or less for snowy conditions to build up in the UK and that's when we get our very low temps as the low sun is reflected off the snow and the temps keep dropping for up to week or so. The cold and snow can come say from the east over a small number of days but cannot be related to a longer trend. Having said all that I will be enjoying watching the snow spread in around from were it is now and then reach countries near to us and finaly hopfuly get here winter time putting on a good show and some impressive low tempertures being set. Too me its like a global version of twitter snow watch! watching the snows progress. If we have a harsh winter we may have only a little over two months to wait. With the regrowth of Arctic ice being slow and being farther from the North Russian Coast I expect that it will slow down the build of snow cover in that area, the answer to that being in the charts in about 10 days when the earliest large negative anomalies always appear. Slight build up again of snow on the latest chart.
  18. Snow still growing, but needing more now in Northern Russia to keep up with the 1970-2000 average.
  19. Just my thoughts CH adding to what you saidThe snow map Its worse than 2011 but better than 2010 so I'm not sure if it has been a bad start because the maps are a average for 1970 to 2000 so it is not comparing say with last year or the year before, so we have recent years of the warm polar region red pixels around the beginning of September without any effect on the winter. I see there have been no big negative snow anomalies away from the polar region until the 22nd or 23rd of September (due to never having much) since the start date of the maps that are displayed (1999) I'm really happy to see Snow falling so early but October is when things get more focused and more telling of the coming winter , snow cover will get worse and then better again a few times before the end of Winter. We may have to put up with (hope not) the weather messing around with warmth until the start of November and still do a winter 2010 mk2 Check out the red 6th November 2010 and thirty days later....the rest is history! 6 Nov 6 Dec
  20. Have to say lapland is really working overtime on snow making for September! http://www.yr.no/place/Norway/Oppland/Lom/Sognefjellshytta/long.html webkamera link http://www.skjolden....i/webkamera.htm
