Convective/Storm Discussion Thread - 1st August onwards
wimblettben replied to Supacell's topic in Storms & Severe Weather
Had plenty of heavy showers today and one particularly in the last hour but we have had nothing thundery. They seem to be producing lightning as they move away to the east as some people from the southeast regional thread have posted. -
#NameOurStorms: is it a good idea?

Don't know! Models are all over the place with the track, the met office has warnings for the north of the country yet other forecasts take the worst of the winds across the south. -

Didn't start till quite late today but there were some rumbles from distant storms over the hills to our north and northeast. Before these occurred the structure of the cumulonimbus clouds looked very good with well formed anvils. I saw one powerful looking cloud to ground strike in the distance which produced cannon sounding thunder, and then a period of very heavy rain passed over later on before giving one close rumble of thunder as it moved away. -
You lot should have posted in the convective thread as well as theres nothing in there from our area apart from my posts. Just dark clouds around with sunny intervals right now and I don't have any footage but there was some thunder earlier along with very heavy showers. I saw one intra-cloud strike with a nice loud rumble overhead looking from our back door.

Well there hasn't been anymore thundery stuff for a while now and its currently not raining either. There were a few more rumbles after I last posted and i wen't outside to inspect those as the thundery shower moved away. Surprised no one else around here has posted to be honest, unless they have all posted in the southwest regional thread. -

Thunder roughly every few minutes here with already some heavy showers. Saw one intra-cloud strike right over head with nice rumbling sounding thunder soon after! -

Must be some sporadic lightning around here as I have seen a few faint flashes. Just had a fairly heavy shower come through as well. Forecast must be a bit off as it was suppose to be dry till dawn here, unless its because its from unstable mid level clouds which are always hard to forecast! -

Doesn't mean much for eastern areas though, unless something causes storms to break out away from coasts. The stuff would have to shift a good few miles to be of any note for most of us further inland. -

Well that was a fairly good afternoon of showers and mostly distant to a few close rumbles of thunder/lightning. Nothing major, the stuff you usually get on an unsettled showery summer day, but there was a cloud to ground strike to our north over the hills of the deverills that flipped the switch of our surge protecter and turned our electricity off. -

Just heard a loud rumble here, going out to inspect. -

I wonder if it was a positive strike that hit near you? They are the most powerful forms of lightning and you tend to get those from elevated storms. The thunders more powerful as the lightning has had to travel further than normal. -

Have to find a way to get rid of the damn thing then as you lot seem to have had the worst luck out of all of us here for storm events. I mean I think I have bad luck for storms missing a good 6 so far, at least i've had two storm days. -
Don't worry I was! No way I was going to bed with the distant heat lightning and potential we had yesterday evening. I was laughing like mad at times with when those storms moved in as I wan't expecting to see US type lightning strikes going all across the sky in the form of anvil crawlers. I've seen that type of lightning on videos before, but never in person.
-
Well the distant lightning did indeed mean something as later in the night we had a few storms around the area. I think it was the first time we have had that US style anvil crawler type lightning, with nice long rumbling soft thunder with loads of vibrant intra-cloud lightning. It wasn't the most intense storm, but it definitely had the most impressive and beautiful lightning I have ever seen. Its still mild and humid here now, with some cloud around.

Can confirm heat lightning here right now, which is lightning too far away for the thunder to be heard. Its to my South, Southeast with loads of intra-cloud strikes in a nice orange coloured top of a cumulonimbus. Going to go outside and investigate, definitely staying up tonight now as I reckon that trough is kicking things off. -

Not heard anymore thunder since that last rumble. Think I am going to have to just spend the night looking out for distant heat lightning now for potential arriving storms. Got a horrible feeling that thats our chance gone for the period now though.
