Model output discussion 25th Jan onwards
wimblettben replied to Paul's topic in Forecast Model Discussion
Don't get how somone could find 50mph winds boring. We rarely even reach that here on a pole 30ft+ off the ground, and thats just with gusts. I nearly reached it this Winter but quite a few areas near here had whole trees snapped or uprooted. Anyway it doesn't look good for flooded areas this week with the next batch of lows coming in, a pattern change could be emerging though as some models are showing height rises in the future. -
I don't think you have to worry unless nearer the time the models suddenly revert back to storm force winds even inland again. Storm force winds at sea however are not that unusual and thats what the latest models have began to show as the storm is weaker. There is clear signs on the models of the storm not being as strong, will probably end up the same as yesterdays wet and blowy maker.

Weather in the general media (Newspaper features etc)
wimblettben replied to Summer Sun's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
Don't get what all the fuss is about, its Winter. Expect it to be wet and windy. -
I know that but in terms of the strength of these winds so far its been no different then the highest we get every other year.

Well the fact that there is only a yellow warning of rain for Tuesday into Wednesday tells me that wind wise its not going to be anything noteworthy. This going by the fact that there was a yellow warning of wind for us yesterday yet there were only 25-35mph gusts. Anyway its much improved today weather wise with good sunny spells and light to gentle winds.
-
It could change back again but its looking like the storm we had around christmas will remain the worst out of the rest we have had this Winter. I know this may sound selfish but I was hoping that the one for Wednesday wouldn't allready be shown to weaken, fill at the wrong time or be shunted away from us on future runs last night but it looks like thats whats happening. For this area, Octobers big storm and the rest of December was far more stormy, frequent days of gusts reaching 40-45mph on our house wheras recently at most its only reached 30-35mph.
-
I am keeping my eye only on Wednesday next week as that looks to be the only time that us down south will have anything noteworthy wind wise. Been a bit dissapointing today really, highest gust of 37mph and has been between 25mph to 35mph all day. Nothing compared to the winds we had in October and December.
-
Wednesday next week will probably be the worst for us in the south as there are 60-70mph gusts showing inland on XCW weather map. Probably a repeat of the storm we had over the christmas period if it verifies where I got two gusts reaching 49mph on the house and quite a few trees were snapped or uprooted in Stourhead Gardens.

Not been much to talk about down this way today! Highest gust only 25mph and 24hour rain total of 7mm, typical breezy weather for this area. Forecast was for 40-50mph gusts even for us and that certainly hasn't happend. I wonder now whether or not that means that all of these lows showing on the models will be dramatically toned down including tomorrows?
-
Doesn't look to be too bad for areas away from the midlands northwards. No different to what we had at the end of last week, with 50-60mph gusts on coasts and 35-45mph inland.
-
Yeah, I was up Castle Hill today which is shaped in a way which increases the wind dramatically compared to surrounding areas. I recorded a period of 50-60mph gusts and then a squall came through with a period of 70mph gusts and one to 80mph. I have never been in a wind like this before. The highest I have ever recorded on a handheld anemometer before this was 61mph which was back in 2012. Its odd though because back at home the house anemometer only got 43mph.

That looks pretty nasty! One area of the isobars are so close together that you can't even make them out seperately. They have become just a solid colour of white.
-
Suprised there is hardly any mention about this on the Model output, you would think you were living on another world.

Quite interesting weather this past day or so. Yesterday had winds gusting between 30-35mph on the house all day and evening with even some distant flashes of lightning and one closer one with a rumble of thunder. Then this morning I was suprised to see a gust of 43mph before a pink coloured flash of lightning happend. There was a period then of winds gusting 30-35mph and at least five more flashes and rumbles of thunder before it cleared up for the rest of the day as breezy weather with sunshine and showers. The clouds looked pretty interesting and meanacing also, some of them had a very dark purple colour to them.

Severe Atlantic Storms over the Christmas & New Year period
wimblettben replied to stubbys's topic in Storms & Severe Weather
Looks like we are getting the inland fresh to strong winds that were forecast now. The winds are not damaging but considering that its suppose to be remaining like this tomorrow will mean that it will probably be the most prolonged amount of wind since the inland gales to severe gales we had around christmas. The windy spells we had after that were the same strength as now but they were only there for a few hours vs nearly two days. -
South East & East Anglia Regional Weather Discussion 03/01/14
wimblettben replied to Snowangel-MK's topic in Regional
40-50mph gusts would be called a strong to near gale force wind based on the mean winds. No real damage would be caused by these winds to proper structures or typical trees but some unusually weak branches or trees could be damaged or uprooted.- 784 replies

Severe Atlantic Storms over the Christmas & New Year period
wimblettben replied to stubbys's topic in Storms & Severe Weather
To be honest I am suprised about all this talk of gales and storms as theres been nothing of note here really all day. There has been some light to moderate rain which has now finished and the winds have only gusted to 26mph.
