  1. Would be v. interested to know if any of our more knowledgeable radar-watchers have any idea of how long this is likely to last (the stuff off the Channel - I assume that's what we now have!) - or is it impossible to tell? To me it just looks like a big colourful band and I haven't a clue as to what it's made of or where it's going! EDIT: Weathergeek beat me to it!
  2. Heavens to betsy - it is quite something here - definitely the best of the winter so far, and FINALLY starting to stick... It's heavier than the MetO warnings led me to believe, although we obviously don't have massive accumulations - still, I would urge anyone local to make tracks for home asap if they can, as I definitely wouldn't fancy driving in this and I suspect in an hour or so it will be even worse.
  3. Looks and feels like Siberia in Tunbridge Wells though not much is settling - am not looking forward to the school run! Ah well, at least I have an excuse to wear my Cossack hat for the first time, thus providing the kids with much merriment and embarrassment in equal measure...
  4. We have a very light layer here - on cars, flowerbeds, the garden furniture - nowhere near enough to measure though! Still snowing very slightly - picks up intensity now and again. Actually, on looking again, it's now settling quite rapidly on the grass and rooftops - it's very fine, grainy snow and I think it's quite deceptive - there seem to be short-lived but intense bursts which are really starting to leave their mark. I'm now officially really excited!
  5. Very light snow flurries here in West Kent now - and compared to a couple of hours ago it is absolutely bitter cold... Something's coming!!
  6. Just to elucidate, I did indeed mean the automated data forecasts - sorry for any confusion.
  7. I've always wondered, is the Netweather forecast just based on the GFS or does it have other input?
  8. I am now doing a little dance! It does seem quite early for an actual warning to be issued - hopefully they are now pretty sure this is really on its way? They also seem to have added snow for my location on Tuesday on their 5-day regional forecast, whereas previously it was only showing on Monday... upgrades all round! The MetO's little warning matrix thingie is showing 3/4 in terms of likelihood but only 2/4 in terms of impact - definitely all moving in the right direction...
  9. Given how good the GFS has been at predicting this cold spell perhaps we should give it the benefit of the doubt - though I wouldn't have said that at any other time this winter!
  10. Apologies if this has already been mentioned, but there is a yellow weather alert out which covers our region (in fact it covers the whole of England) - an 80% chance of cold and heavy (!) snow over the weekend, with rain moving south turning to snow, even at lower levels, by Saturday evening. And heavier snow affecting the far south on Sunday night. Mention of these conditions continuing through to Tuesday and perhaps longer. Sorry, don't know how to post the link to the MetO website - but this general UK warning is not yet reflected in the more detailed regional forecasts... which I guess is an indication of the uncertainty there still is about when/where/if snow is to fall. Whatever happens it has to be better than this truly awful weather we are having today...
  11. Happy birthday bjay kent - and hopeitsnows - hope y'all had a lovely day! It's my twins' birthday on Wednesday so wish me luck for that! On the weather front, I have to admit - and I never thought I'd say this - but I really don't want any more winter weather - bring on the Spring, please... It just doesn't seem right to have snow in late March, let alone what it does to the plants/crops etc... and I would personally love a bit of warm sunshine!
  12. Just wanted to say, all the best for tomorrow, John - though I don't often post in here I am always hovering and I am so sorry for what you have gone through... And - assuming that we have seen the last of winter - I just wanted to say a HUGE thank you to everyone on this thread for the last few months. It's been quite a turbulent time weather-wise - some amazing charts that didn't quite come to fruition - but also some fairly decent snowfalls IMBY - the kids got to go sledging three times, which certainly beat last year! So roll on next winter - having said that, you are all so lovely I suspect I may well become one of the occasional summer posters...
  13. Here in Tunbridge Wells we are still getting quite a decent covering - maybe 1cm by morning but sometimes the journey is as good as the destination... Have I got lucky here in TW or what - MetO showing heavy snow for us right through until tomorrow morning - I didn't believe that earlier but now it IS heavy(ish)...
  14. It certainly puts our obsession with the weather into perspective... Just echoing what everyone else has said - sending all my sympathy to those going through bad times, and many congratulations to Leemondo and family...
  15. Snowing hard again here in Tunbridge Wells after not letting up for most of the morning, but not settling yet ... this has been a very strange day! It's lovely to see it falling so I for one am very happy, especially seeing as I was expecting nothing at all.
  16. Snowing lightly here in Tunbridge Wells - didn't expect that! - v. small flakes interspersed with the occasional larger one.
  17. Ah, leave CWT alone - it's like having Tigger on the forum - or Pollyanna, remember her? - always playing 'the Glad Game' whenever things were looking grim...
  18. I'd give the snow an 8/10 IMBY - not dramatic amounts in terms of quantity (we ended up with almost 12cm, which got topped up a little last night where it had melted), but the score is boosted by the fact that the biggest fall (Sunday's) was in the daytime - rather see lighter snow fall for hours on end than open the curtains the morning after a huge heavy night-time fall (though that is good too!) Unlike some I don't much like snow that stays around for days and days as by then it is just a dirty, slushy nuisance, especially when temperatures aren't low enough to keep it looking pristine, so I am quite looking forward to this weekend... Frosts - 2/10 - there have only really been two or three really frosty mornings and the snow that fell never developed that crispy crust the day after. Synoptics - don't really feel equipped to judge these yet but will have a go... December was obviously a major letdown but the January cold spell fell into place nicely, so I would give them 6/10. Particularly enjoyed radar watching while it was actually snowing - have never done that before!
  19. I'd ignore that tbh - think it hasn't been updated since 3PM - the five-day forecast which was updated at 5PM is showing something different.
  20. Really picking up in intensity here. Not settling much yet though
  21. CWT, I think I'm going to employ you to follow me around and cheer me up whenever I feel a bit down!
  22. Yay! Just started snowing v.v. lightly in Tunbridge Wells! Only the odd flake but definitely snow not rain or sleet... Temp has really dropped here too.
  23. The MetO now have a yellow snow warning out for this area from 6PM tonight right through till tomorrow morning. Nothing here yet though, but it has got very dark. We still have quite a lot of snow cover on the ground so hopefully if we do get any it might stick! This might be winter's last hurrah judging by the mutterings coming out of the MOD forum, so if it does happen make the most of it!
