  1. I think 'the fuss' is because many thousands of people will be embarking upon long journeys across country both tomorrow and on Christmas Eve - just when the wind and rain will be at their worst. Potentially some people won't make it home to their families for Christmas - which is a pretty big deal.
  2. Quite a few roads flooded round here in Tunbridge Wells - if this rain keeps up I can see some of the back roads becoming pretty dangerous. Plus there seems to be more than the usual quota of over-stressed drivers wanting to get to their destinations far too quickly... Take care, everyone!
  3. Interestingly on the BBC News website the storm surge coverage is way out in front in terms of the numbers reading it... that's also a very good point Cyclonic Happiness makes about the complete failure to mention how the storm has affected Europe. Hamburg in particular has taken a real hit.
  4. It also strikes me as being a massive waste of licence payers' money as the BBC have clearly already despatched reporters all along the East Coast and now will be virtually standing them down in some instances. I've complained too - not that it will get me anywhere - but why they had to drop the live feed on their main website beggars belief.
  5. Yes, unfortunately it does seem that the article is accurate about what is going to happen later today... we have friends in Southwold. Pretty scary stuff.
  6. I really know nothing - but have been here in the run-up to winter for a couple of years now - but I just wanted to say over the last few days there have been some really helpful, well-informed and factual posts which have hugely helped my understanding. Off topic I guess, but thanks - and it's exciting to know winter is (hopefully) on its way, albeit slowly for us in the SE - but much more optimistic than a week ago!
  7. It's the way it changes the mundane and boring into something amazing and magical. It makes a day feel like a holiday - which it often is if no trains are running. And I can wear my Cossack hat in public without feeling like a complete pillock.
  8. Can someone tell me why I put myself through this ridiculous rollercoaster for 3/4 months every year? Just been in the MAD thread - first the cold spell was on, then it was off, now it's back on again (possibly) - I really should stay out of there. But I can't stop myself. I think Netweather should have a Rehab thread!
  9. This is more like it! Lovely combination of blue skies/sunshine and crisp air - only one thing needed to make it perfect winter weather... and yes, I see Metcheck are forecasting snow for me on Sunday 24 November. (Don't worry, I know Metcheck is rubbish and their forecasts never verify... but still, nice to see this early in the season.)
  10. I'm still at the beginning of a very steep learning curve, even though this is my third winter on here - but unless I'm missing something everything isn't downgraded at all - the trend is still looking reasonably good. You might need to try and step back a bit, and not examine every run (and people's reactions to it) in such detail, or you will be a nervous wreck by the time winter actually comes! Nice to be back here again btw - I don't post often but I'm always here as the will it/won't it snow excitement builds (and then comes crashing down again....) There's nothing like it!
  11. Like Stu London and Stewfox, it was the New Year's Eve/Day snowfall in 78/79 that really got me hooked. It's the first disruptive snow I can remember - it was knee-deep and I clearly recall being in awe of how the world had been totally transformed without any human involvement whatsoever. I've also always really enjoyed the whole different language of weather - when I was very little I loved the rhythmic poetry of the Shipping Forecast (not limited to weather, I know, but same ballpark), and then I became intrigued by the TV weather forecast with its isobars and (then) totally meaningless terminology (this was obviously before it got dumbed down). It's still only snow that gets me really excited though.
  12. Hello again all from an occasional (i.e. cold-weather only) poster, hope you're all in fine fettle - I held out until November last year but this year it seems all to be kicking off early... it's quite exciting, isn't it?! On the Winter thread I've noticed a few people saying we can't have northern blocking (equating to cold) in late October/November and expect to get it later on in the winter as well - I know nothing, but this doesn't seem to make sense to me - it's not as if there's a quota which somehow gets used up, is there? Or is there in fact a knock-on effect of some sort? Forgive me asking in here but you're all much friendlier! Btw Reefseeker, I will happily join your parent of foul-tempered teenager support group - I have two ten-year-old versions who are driving me crazy!
  13. For once I'd be quite happy to see a few more days of dull greyness - purely for selfish reasons as I need to fly out of Gatwick on Good Friday and I shall be really peeved if I can't - you are all welcome to enjoy Snowmageddon for the fortnight that I'm away! Actually after that really rather upsetting BBC news report last night - sheep and lambs dying in the snow and cold - I am starting to think that we have had too much of a good thing. It's fine for me in my little urban corner of West Kent to frolic in the snow but if I was a hill farmer in Cumbria...
  14. Lowestoft, Lowestoft Town where the snow held off The town where Gary Walker's demands Count for nothing if the snow shield stands...
  15. V light grainy snow flurry just now - blink and you'd miss it - it has suddenly got cloudy and quite a bit darker though. More interesting than grey mush anyway!
  16. I totally agree - yesterday, several hours after it had been issued, the Amber weather warning for snow for the SE wasn't even mentioned - I appreciate that they are filmed in advance, but surely not that far in advance? And this was very much an event deserving an amber warning. After all it's only us weather geeks who obsessively check the MetO website for the latest information - most people are entirely reliant on the Beeb for their forecasts.
  17. I think to be fair many people who got stuck last night were simply trying to get home from work - most employers would take a pretty dim view of anyone who called in absent in the morning, on the off-chance of possible snow in the evening... Especially in the current economic climate.
  18. Well, there is a yellow warning out for tomorrow and the MetO chief forecaster is mentioning 'frequent snow showers, some of them heavy' and 'temporary blizzard conditions' - in Kent! I would have thought there is a strong likelihood of another amber warning unless this changes. Meanwhile, it keeps on snowing... and snowing... here...
  19. I'm really chuffed for you - bet you get to go sledging tomorrow! I'm really hoping the school's closed so my two get their last snow day of the winter (probably...) Just wanted to say thanks also for your reply to my earlier post re streamers - for some reason my tablet wouldn't let me respond to your post, but it was much appreciated - am still learning loads but definitely feel marginally less stupid than last year... P
  20. Thanks v much - all is clear now! It's been driving me crazy all afternoon!
  21. Steve. - massive congrats by the way on 10,000 posts - and every one a beauty! - please forgive my ignorance, but is the snow we are getting in Tunbridge Wells a result of this streamer? I am very confused by the radar - had thought it was coming North off the Channel
  22. T Wells is wild and windy Lauren - about 4cm so far but it shows no sign of stopping... I have heard that some roads on the outskirts are getting difficult... EDIT - in the minute or so since I typed that it has really picked up! - And a howling gale - if you can avoid driving in I would do so - M23 at a standstill tonight!
