I haven’t had a chance to look at models and forecasts today. What’s expected for Kent before the thaw this weekend?

Seems the SE’s snow event for tomorrow and Friday has vanished from Met Office’s weather warnings. :(

The South East is still under a yellow warning for snow for Thursday and Friday - think they are unsure exactly who is going to be in the firing line.

  2. Genuine question (though probably the wrong thread, but this is the only place I post): this very fine powdery snow seems to me to have quite a distinct, almost chemical smell. Have never noticed this with snowfall in the past. We have an enclosed basement terrace which is thick with snow and I notice it every time I go out there (it's not normally stinky, I promise!) Is there any  scientific basis to this, or am I just going a bit potty?

We have just had another albeit fairly brief heavy shower - we now have 18cm! (though I don't want to brag as I know how hugely irritating that is if you're not looking out at an expanse of white.... we've been lucky this time and I hope everyone sees something by the end of the week).

Cloudy but nothing falling.  Would love to know where Kate is in relation to me, though!

In Tunbridge Wells, if I'm the Kate you mean, this was a couple of hours ago but it has paused here momentarily. The bright light in the picture is not our car being torched but the nearby lamp post, in non-working order for six years, which TWBC with impeccable timing decided to repair a few weeks ago - it is so bright it sears your retinas, but fantastic for snow-watching!IMG_0059.thumb.jpg.4a3f36ab314dce6cac3e290714f332f6.jpg

I work from home, on the computer, and have become a night owl. Ideal for snow watching in the witching hours lol.

Me too! - I'm a freelance book editor and have never been an early riser (to put it mildly) so am ideally suited to lamppost watching - though tonight the snow has sporadically been so heavy here no lamppost was needed. Am quite excited about tonight! - but annoyed that i failed to buy biscuits..... the house is completely devoid of snacks!

Chill. Most places will see some lying snow at some point, some places will luck out and get dumped on, a few places might get unlucky and miss out.

This was always going to be the case, as explained by others, due to the way showers form and 'cluster'. And it's still early.

Alternatively, spend some years watching, learn where the sweet spots tend to be, and move there... I can tell you the Tunbridge Wells area and just south of there in E Sussex almost always do very well in any kind of NE'rly set up. I used to be based there and you always win around there. I called a while ago and checked and it sounds like the same happening again. Over 4cm lying at last measure...

Yes, we are right in the centre of town and I can confirm between 4cm and 5cm. I did move here partly

because I was told we got more snow than most!

Nothing like writing off a cold spell just 24hrs in. Especially considering any significant snow was not forecast for until after 30 hours!

Here in West Kent only a few hours into the forecast snowfall we already have 4cm...... it may be that we are just lucky, but yes, the night is still young! The local BBC forecast also seemed to be mentioning further snow tomorrow night - so hopefully that will involve more of us.

That's just SE trains covering their backsides though more than a forecast.

In the past they've adopted a heavily reduced timetable when the chance of snow was about 20% by every model. Didn't arive and they still ran the skeleton service.

Clearly the chances are higher now but I wouldn't trust an SE guidance for love nor money. Could come at 3pm or 9pm they put up rubbish anyway

Totally agree, I wasn't suggesting it was a forecast - more an excuse to down tools at the suggestion of a snowflake!

The below has been added to the warning for Tuesday into Wednesday on the Meto site so looks like we will be seeing some amber warnings soon if not today then definitely tomorrow..

Separate Amber warnings are being issued to cover those areas which currently look most likely to see impacts

So far the Amber warning is just for the East of England.

So the south east getting nothing now just the midlands and north

Personally I'd rather trust the Met Office: here's the forecast for London and the South East from Monday through to Wednesday:

Extremely cold. Snow showers developing, becoming widespread and heavier later Monday. Frequent, occasionally heavy snow showers continuing Tuesday and Wednesday, leading to locally significant accumulations. Becoming windy from Tuesday.

Not quite sure how that translates to 'the south east getting nothing'.
