If skies clear tonight and we get a frost then yes; but the MetO are saying unlikely and the max tomorrow will get up to 8C, way too warm for snow. Eastern parts might see snow initially though?

Yes, I think it very much depends on your location - here in West Kent we are being forecast only 1C all morning so may well get to see a 'wintry mix'.

Really?! We're about 10 mins drive east of Crowborough, 145m asl, and still only have rain. Barely sleet. Either it's about to turn for us, or we've ended up with an unlucky pocket of warmer air off the channel earlier.

Snowing North of us, South of us (Ditchling) and just barely West of us...

It changed incredibly quickly for us in Tunbridge Wells - literally a few minutes ago and you're just down the road from us so - be patient!

  3. Good to be back in here again after a couple of years - looking forward to tonight.... The MetOffice have already upgraded me from what it was showing first thing this morning and are now telling me I'll have heavy snow for four hours from 6PM - I know there's still plenty of time for a downgrade but I'm allowing myself to get a tiny bit excited..... Just to see it falling from the sky!

  4. Fozfoster, it's still only 8th December…. some things are (hopefully) worth waiting for! There are quite a few positive signals for good news later on - yes, perhaps we may have to wait until January to see anything worthwhile - and nothing is guaranteed - but with a number of experienced and very knowledgeable posters telling us that something may be coming in a few weeks, I for one am still feeling very positive...

  5. I won't repost them as they are both v. long posts - but until Steve's post on 23 November I was under the impression that he had already published a very comprehensive winter forecast - in the two posts (both much longer than those he has quoted above), on 26th and 29th October - I was surprised when he said there would be another instalment to follow as so much ground had been covered already.  I suggest forum members go back and read these in conjunction with the 'official' NW forecast to compare/contrast.

  6. Thankyou

So it was fairly accurate although no mention of the monster storms we were continually blasted by LOL although they did mention a displaced southerly jet hence why southern area's were hit by storms usually reserved for the far north!

Interesting, does anyone know what their predictions were for winter 2009/10 please?

I'm fairly sure last year was the first time they did it.

  7. Ian Pennell's forecast, likely to be very accurate (to be fair to him it deserves to be) another  virtual snowless winter for the South

Well, I'm sure he's a great guy - but he isn't a qualified meteorologist (I don't think),  nor does he have the  credentials of other posters on NW, in terms of incorporating the latest research -  so I'm not clear why his forecast is likely to be more accurate than anyone else's. Though I appreciate that his forecast has clearly taken many hours - and full credit to him for that.

  8. Reading Ian penalls great write up on winter sounds like a very similar pattern to last winter. Gales rain. With any cold been very short lived. This guy called last winter spot on. Plus he has backed it all up incredibly well. Certainly a must read.

Sorry, I am struggling to find a forecast from Ian Penall for Winter 2014/15 - could you provide a link?
