Well with the possibilty of gale force winds and spring tides, i might get myself to kircaldy and get some photo's of the sea crashing over the wall ( or me being blown away)! This certainly is more exciting than the last 2 weeks but I kinda got used to having 'useable' days!

very dark this morning in Lochgelly to start with then brightened up somewhat as i got into Alloa, seems very mild this morning 7.5 on my car thermomeer. Do you think we may get some back edge snow as the front moves away later this week?
-
Morning all. 7.4c WSW and also very dark. Thursday currently looking a bit ominous? my least favourite weather, as wind can cause so much damage. I guess the warnings will appear soon.
Where's Mondy?
Hi Blitzen, where do you reckon the strongest gusts are going to be?

For the non-technically minded folk who DO wish to follow this site purely to gain an understanding as to whether it’s likely to rain, sleet, snow or blizzard at this time of year rather than worrying about splitting PV’s or whatever else it is they do, please please continue posting Martin. Personally I find your comments and non-biased summary an extremely useful tool amongst some of the excitement that occurs from time to time. On behalf of the silent types that enjoy reading them, thank you!!
DuncanK,
I mirror your remarks and find Martins un biased comments extremely useful. I am on a steep learning curve and when I look at the charts and make notes, i compare them to martins to see if Iam on par or in the right ball park. Please keep posting Martin!!!

I was surprised when I looked out my window a few moments ago and saw the grains flurrying in the wind. Feels really cold this morning too!Funnily enough, it has been flurrying away here for the last half hour or so. Very small flakes though.

Freezing with a dusting of lying snow. Current temp -1.6C, dew -3.9C.
Some pics
Nice pics NC, especially with that snow shower just on the horizon
I don't know what the stats are for this area as atmospherics appear to be playing hell with my signal at the moment. Safe to say it's a cold one though and everything white with frost. Didn't really expect anything overnight here snow wise.
It was very cold this morning, hardest frost on my car and the ground was solid. Garden thermometre says -3, lovely morning!

joe b thinks we are looking good
Joe laminate floori â€@BigJoelaminate floori 23m
Europe-parties over as it turns colder, could deepen into a December to remember. Blocking could pop Hope those turbines are working
note the atlantic in the chart
W = warm
C = cold
TRIPOLE = warm then cold then warm ( warm south of Greenland, cold mid atlantic and warm tropical atlantic)
its said if this sets up in the atlantic it can mean a cold winter for us here in the UK
SST anomalies can be found here

Thanks, clear to me now, heres hoping!

What a beautiful morning, quite fresh and sweet smelling after the nights rain. Suns up now and its blasting through my works window. A little cool this morning at 4 degrees. Charts are looking good for at least a short cold spell later, fingers crossed.
TRIPOLE trying to set up for winter

Hi, I am at an early learning stage, can you explain Tripole for me or point me to where I can find out more. Cheers!

Well this was the frst morning this week without a hard frost and me having to scrape my car of ice. The rain last night about 7pm was so intense you could hear it over the telly! End of next week not looking bad for some cold and snow if it comes off, still early days though and anything and everything can and probably will happen!
-
Congrats Edo ! No idea how you will find the time with 4 of them on the go, I struggle to keep track with 3. It's great having a boy though to even out all the Girly stuff !
From further afield on Netwx, thought I would share this from the Super Typhoon thread, a totally stunning image of Haiyan / Yolanda.
Frightening.
Stunning image, I want to be in that little blue bit lol

Excellent post from JH....still nothing in the current model suite to suggest anything in the way of cold weather, well not away from Scottish mountain tops, but at least the big 2 continue to advertise somewhat higher pressure across the south towards the end of the reliable. FI then shows HP developing across the continent, which looks a fairly natural progression based on current data, so if this has to happen hopefully it will remain close enough to keep things a good deal drier than of late....albeit mild.
I agree, excellent post from JH. Its especially good for learners like myself who ar often confused by conflicting posts. Posts like yous and JH's ais better understanding for me, many thanks

The Atlantic is certainly firing up, its been a while since we had a meaty storm here in Scotland. Is this a good omen for the rest of winter? or is it just as likely to stay like this like other years have?
-
Horrible wet wet wet morning driving from Lochgelly to Alloa. Lots of surface water. I woke up in the night to hear the rain pounding on the dormer bedroom roof, didnt disturb my wifes snoring though lol
Hope Mtahew Hugo is proved correct and we get a very snowy December!
-
Glorious blue sky hre in Alloa, really biting and gusty wind though. We had a real BIG shower first thing this morning whilst I was travelling from Lochgelly to Alloa, skies darkened, car lights went on and the rain pelted down. Hoping for a proper chill tonight now!
-
Considering that the gravitational pull of a continent can generally cause the ocean to rise up the side of the continent by only a few centimetres at most it wuld be highly unlikely that there would be any 'localised' effects on the weather. This was the exact same question that I asked my phd supervisor so i have enjoyed reading the responses!
-
Cant believe how mild n moist it feels in Alloa today, louds just starting to break to give some blue patches. My garden needed the rain! Having said that, i have bulbs that i have planted for the spring and they have sprouted already! Crazy!. What type of weather do you think the coming high pressure dominated models will bring. On the look of it it could be quite coudy for a while or at the very least misty and foggy first thing giving way to high cloud and some afternoon sunshine.
I noticed on the model output page a big plunge of cold air on the continent, that will certainly help cool things down ready for our winter.
Heres for a good week to come without any giant apples falling on our heads *scottish skier'

Draztik's post is referring to beyond mid-month, obviously the ECM 32 dayer is moving to a pretty standard October pattern of a north/south split in conditions.
I have to admit I'm a little disappointed by that update. Given the CFS/JMA/Beijing climate models are trying to push for a colder and wetter end to October (by cold I mean below to well below average) with a trough over central Europe, it seems the ECM is going for the exact opposite here.
Thanks CS!

The ECM ensemble agrees with the Op by keeping pressure right over the UK at t144 not interested in UKMO's northerly
Op
Basically its as you were from ECM with high pressure dominating for the foreseeable future
Day 10 shows no end in sight and this continues to have ensemble support
ensemble
GFS ens at day 10 also has the high dominating
Not interested in UKMO's northerly either
Hi, it is sometimes confusing as a relative newby that you often see two posts like yours and Drazztic's together (186). One says relatively benign weather for the near future and no sign of change at day 10 and the other says increasing signs of unsetteld weather from mid month.I know that everyones comments are valid and i enjoy reading them, can you tell me what the differences are on the ECM that you both may be seeing differently? I am very much on a steep learning curve and would like to be able to recognise the differences that make people have different predictions.

Very steady rain her in Alloa atm. Unusual dry air this morning, very still but no dew on the car window and then the rain jst started as if a switch had been flipped. Wondering what the forecasted high next week will bring for us, cloud and more cloud maybe?
-
here in Fife, Scotland, we had a great weekend with blue skies and a temperature of about 15-17c although it felt much warmer than that in the sun. BBC forecast for this week shows relatively little rain for my area whailst others look very wet. If the models are correct, maybe another weekend of sunshine to end a lovely 'useable' autumn.
-
Not sure how cold it was first thing but there was a nip in the air when I was hopping on my feet whilst the dog relieved himself at 5am!!
Currently some sun with some cloud and 8C.
Lets hope it gets cold enough to make doggy wee icicles this winter (poor dog)

Well, it wasnt a full winter scrape of ice of the car, but there was ice when i used the squeegee (is that how its spelled?) to clear the screen. Very fresh and clear air but with a fair bit of cloud still. Love mornings like this!
-
Well the ramping for a fine and warm settled spell on the model thread is in full throttle. Although it looks good, it would only take a little alteration of the position of the high and we up here in bonny scotland would become very changeable. I would love a fine and settled spell to take us in to autumn proper. Really chilly this morning, had to put a jumper on today!!!!!
-
Just seeing some high cloud coming in from the northwest ahead of the rain later tonight and tomorrow. End of a lovely day though, now looking forward to hearing the tiles on the dormer bedroom rattle LoL
