  1. Yes, political undertones have developed, but surely any thread involving discussion of climate change, however the thread title is framed, is bound to do so. So many facets of the topic are de facto both political and divisive.

  3. Noticed this quite impressive lenticular formation this evening - rushed the camera settings - so a bit fuzzy.
  4. On the topic of geese, I had a very brief visit to Montrose yesterday and was advised that the Pink-footed species had arrived along with 1000+ Canada geese, which is interesting as I understood they, the Canada geese, were a mainly sedentary species. A downhill day weatherwise here. After a bright start, now grey, with a spit of rain and cool. Yesterday evening's sunset - looking NE.
  5. I've now idea, bigsnow. There's quite a lot of folklore around migratory pattern of geese. I suppose they must have decided weather conditions were favourable at the time.
  6. Pink-footed geese have arrived 2 weeks earlier than usual at the Montrose Basin - around 100 have been counted.
  7. Late last night there was a very large, bemused frog sitting in the middle of the shower tray. It appeared, and was, unharmed, but it could only have accessed the shower by the drain, as evidenced by muddy scuffles around the drain hole. It must have pushed up the free-standing cap on the drain. Which concern is, where did it access the drainage system? Something else to worry about and investigate.
  8. My location is missing heavy precipitation as the rain area seems to be rotating north and west of here. The temp is around 16C and there are even a few butterflies around buffeted by the stiff breeze. The overall ‘feel’ is autumnal though, accentuated by the noticeably shorter daylight hours.
  9. http://www.geomag.bgs.ac.uk/data_service/space_weather/alerts/alert_2019-08-30.html Always hopeful for clear skies.
  10. https://www.weatherforum.nz/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=6013 Interesting and informative thread, Chris. I took the liberty of (trying) to make a live link
  11. Actually, bigsnow, I am a fan of cricket. I like the game and it is not unknown in Scotland. Despite England's lows - it was an exceptional win. And I am trying to be quite impartial here.

  13. Last week’s weather was quite forgettable in Wester Ross. Took this pic en route to Ullapool on the one warmish, almost T-shirt day! Stac Pollaidh Back home it is currently cloudy, still, and a temp of 16C. I have missed my annual dose of France this year.
  14. Awful holiday weather today in Wester Ross - leaden skies, rain, a stiff breeze and a temp of 12.5C. That aside, it has been interesting to note the high number of non-UK registered vehicles touring the area. Suppose many are taking advantage of the pound/euro exchange rate (verging on parity) and hassle free european travel (which perhaps will be a thing of the past).

  16. After a reasonably agreeable, if showery morning/early afternoon in W Ross, it’s now blowing a hoolie with driving rain. The trek around Gruinard Bay at low tide was quite…..refreshing!
  17. Actually, the unusual weather conditions throughout this spring and summer have been very interesting from an observational/ meteorological point of view, regardless of individual weather preferences. A point, which in the greater scheme of things/climate, may be missed.
  18. On the subject of warblers, another in the garden this morning. Common Whitethroat:
  19. I always struggle with Chiffchaff v Willow Warbler ID. For comparison purposes, this bird from this morning is, I'm 99% sure, a Willow Warbler.
  20. That is good news, mushy. I hope your observations indicate a general upward trend in population numbers, and anticipate the publication of the upcoming release in connection with the under noted link. https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/815775/Butterflies_in_the_UK_1976_2018.pdf
  21. With the recent warm days, mild nights and the occasional splash of rain, the garden shrubs/plants (and weeds) are running amok. I quite like the effect, but not looking forward to autumn pruning. A solitary Painted Lady butterfly today.
  22. I think it's patchy though. Apart from an influx of Painted Ladies in June, a few Small Whites, and as noted elsewhere, a very localised colony of Small Torties, butterflies have been pretty scarce. I've not seen a single Peacock yet, a species which is usually quite common hereabouts.
  23. I had only seen one rather ragged Small Tortoiseshell this summer until today and so it was good to come across a small patch of thistles in Glen Lethnot which was covered in them, at least 10 at any one time.
