  1. Since a new (shiny) Scottish thread has been opened - is this good or bad news? Gold from Highlands mine to be made into Scottish jewellery | UK news | The Guardian WWW.THEGUARDIAN.COM Cononish goldmine expected to produce enough ingots to kickstart cottage industry
  2. Yes, but of course climate and politics are inseparable for now. General chat won't sort it. In my view, NW needs to sort out the subjective seeds of doubt posted regularly on here together with blatant denier videos/posts. That is, if it wishes to remain a credible weather and climate site.
  3. After a nice sunrise and a bright early morning, the weather has defaulted to grey stratus and dampness again. The ground underfoot is very wet and soggy, and I’m still feeling crap. Apparently, Jess (doggie) trotted down the track and first-footed the part-time neighbours yesterday, on her own initiative I would add, but dragged in four, feet-full of mud onto their carpets in doing so. She did receive a custard cream though for her effort, so I’m told.
  4. Tell us, then. To which folk do you refer? I'm all ears. I have no trouble in understanding this thread.
  5. Actually, 'acclimatising' to the cold, back then, as you may remember, was tolerating frozen fingers and toes ankle deep in slush, frozen window panes etc because there was not an accessible alternative for many. It was not a virtue.
  6. I never mentioned any particular 'natural fibres' which as you have specified, affect you. But what has that to do with sensible clothing layering in cold weather. edit: I used to rebel, as a teenager, against my mother insisting i wear a woollen vest under my school blouse.
  7. @Klippie Please address your climate change queries elsewhere on the forum.
  8. The discussion on here about detailed pros and cons of weather clothing is a bit funny and also quite vacuous. Surely the most important thing is to wear comfortable and appropriate garments, whatever the weather, according to individual tolerance/fashion/ preference. Personally, in the Scottish winter, the default is three layers in the morning which may be peeled off later should weather circumstances change.
  9. ^^ Yes and now steady drizzle hereabouts. Not very inviting. Not been over the door since boxing day due to a flu-like illness and bronchitis, ( reminds me of NL's calves) nae energy now, and the septic tank is not functioning properly - I wonder if this is because of the high water-table. Anyway, a drain person is supposed to be coming today, but I'm not confident that he will actully turn up until later in the week. Feel like cancelling NY.
  10. That is one of the most insentative, ignorant and arrogant replies on this thread.
  11. Seasons' greetings to one and all. However, I'm not a big fan of the faux religious Xmas with its excessives, waste, and commercial connections, but at least it draws ( albeit temporary) attention to homelessness, lonlieness and family disconnects. Off to tread eggshells tomorrow. Much prefer NY's eve with neighbourly or even Burn's night associations.
  12. Quite. However if you wish to promote your views on this platform, then it would be helpful if evidence was provided on here.
  13. As a non-scientist, but with some basic scientific knowledge and interested in this topic, I do require to scrutinise evidence supporting any particular theory before concluding on the merits. Therefore, there is a need to provide evidence. To state that to ‘put up reams of evidence but all too time consuming’ is lazy and somewhat unconvincing.
  14. @CatchMyDrift We could have waved to each other in passing as I was in that general area yesterday, late morning, on a tootling about way home from a short break on the west coast. Cut east off the A9 at Dunkeld. Snow has disappeared from all but the higher peaks around Arrochar where it was very patchy. The amount of standing water on the Loch Lomond road was rather hazardous. Today, sunny at present but feeling quite cold, 4C and a gentle breeze from the SW. Unfortunately, rain is forecast for later.
  15. Another misty, still start to the day on the west coast. Walked the short trail in Puck’s Glen near Dunoon before the rain encroached. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puck's_Glen Steady rain during the afternoon, with sleet on the higher sections of road. Currently mildish, around 5C, light rain and a stiff wind blowing.
  16. After an inauspicious grey and misty start it morphed into a fine, mainly sunny day in Cowal/Kintyre. Had to strip off outer clothing on a short uphill stroll at Glashburn even though the temp was only around 3C mid-afternoon. No thermal gloves required. Finished Xmas shopping at Lochgilphead (phew).
  17. As viewed from north of Minard
  18. Drove through a swathe of N Central Scotland today (via Aberdeen) to Cowal. Rainy it was with an occasional splodge of sleet in Glen Ogle and the Arrochar area. The temp was a fairly consistent 2-3C. Lying surface water was a hazard and the fields appear totally waterlogged. The snow line seems quite high hereabouts but I'll get a better view in the morning.
  19. Yes, daughter was caught up in the consequential traffic diversions and chaos this morning on way to work. Waiting for the squall to pass over shortly (20mins or so), although the line seems to be somewhat fractured to the south west of here.
  20. The heaviest rain appears to be fizzling out before reaching this location, for the time being anyway; 7C; slight breeze from the SW; very dark overhead.
  21. Bright this morning with a light frost hanging on in the shade, 5C and still. My favourite river spot/walk is the stretch of the North Esk between the Rocks of Solitude and Gannochy Bridge where it tumbles over and through the Highland Boundary Fault
  22. Miserable weather today. Not, relatively cold, but dark, grey and a blustery wind in the morning with intermittent drizzle throughout. Roll on spring or at least the winter solstice. My doggie is not particularly well, either.
  23. Had a stroll to Loch Muick today, but have to say west is best for scenery @Mr Frost Very nippy up there early afternoon, around -1 to 0C and a biting breeze. A little ice art-work in a frosty hollow at the track-side. And a nice sky and rising a temp, 4C, on returning home. .
