  1. The wind dropped this evening making it quite nice out of doors. There was, and still is now fantastic visibility with a great sunset. At 21.37 tonight I can see a lovely pale blue patch of sky.

  3. Just a few glimpses over here in the east too. Darned windy and grey today as well. I have a host of rels from down south and over the water visiting on Monday en route to Aberdeen and I was hoping to prepare a lunch outside...........Seems as if that plan will be off the table.
  4. It was cloudy with intermittent sunshine and breezy this morning, followed by a torrential shower in the early afternoon. Temp a consistent 16-17C Managed to catch some pleasant low evening sunshine on the dog walk. The wind had dropped and it actually felt milder than it had been during the day. Clouds looming though.
  5. A mild day, this was. Loads of stratus and a few impressive cumulus around with the sun occasionally peeking through.Temps around 14-19 C Arbroath smokies warmed in a little butter, and some Ayrshire tatties tonight. Probably taken outside wth a glass of red.
  6. I’ve had an invasion of these pretty Silver Y migrant moths. Counted 6 on the Russian Sage this morning and there were a few more in amongst the Buddleia. It’s been a few years since I have noticed such numbers. @mushymanrob It's not too late to submit a butterfly count - closes on Sunday.

Single storey and attic, 3-bay, L-plan Bucket Mill with Sawmill adjoining. The Finzean Bucket Mill on the N bank of the River Feugh, is a rare and remarkable survival in full working order. The sites of the Bucket Mill and the Sawmill and Turning Mill a mile to the E were established as sawmills in the early 19th century to exploit the Glen Ferrick pine woods. The original sawmill was sold off in pieces at a roup in 1846 and the site was cleared. In 1853 Peter Brown, redeveloped the former mill site and waterfall to form the Bucket Mill. His family worked the mill until the death of Willie Brown, the last in the line, in 1974. The mill lay empty and became derelict until it was taken on by Stan Moyes in 1982, who began to restore the mill, which was opened to the public in 1990. In 1991 the newly formed Finzean Water Mills Trust became the owner of the Bucket Mill. The Water Mills trust was wound up in 1999, and the ownership of the Bucket Mill passed to Birse Community Trust. The Bucket Mill is still operated by Stan Moyes on a part time basis. A small number of buckets are produced annually for a range of uses. During the Second World War the buckets were in high demand by the Navy and RAF, among others. Indeed "it was considered such an essential task by the Government that he [the mill worker] was exempted service with the armed forces" (Cunningham, p10). 8. I have heard that too - possibly due to a temporary dip in global temperatures around that time and speculation as to the origin of ice ages. Also the Gulf Stream took a southward dip in the early 70's with further speculation that this would reduce the ameliorating effect on climate in NW Europe.
  9. After a scarcity of butterflies earlier in the year, there is now a surfeit - just the usual garden types. However, while the Green-veined White is fairly common, they are not usually so keen on dry gardens. Nice to see the Painted Ladies back. I've also noted that although the flowering of some shrubs has been up to a couple of weeks earlier than usual, the actual flowering season has been curtailed, presumably because of the plants transferring their energy into seed production under drought conditions.
  10. Yes, warm and humid here too, temp around 24C, and with a refreshing breeze. A fair amount of cumulus above here, but looking quite benign at the moment. I see there is some thundery activity up in the cold shoulder which maybe moving south, or south-east into the N. Sea.?
  11. Working in Glasgow tomorrow. Shall I need to don a woolly, a jacket and take a brolly?
  12. Popped into SWT Balgavies this afternoon as I had heard that the two Osprey chicks there, fledged last week. They were making a racket on the nest but apart from a flap or two didn’t emerge. One of the adults beside the nest. A blurry fly past. (I need to get more flight shot practice.) Woodpecker visiting the squirrel feeder.
  13. Felt cold here early on. Heating on in this morning! After a showery and windy day, a pic from doggie’s last walk this evening, showing various levels of cloud formations.
  14. A rare visitor this far north. Hummingbird Hawk Moth
  15. Maybe not such a sharp drop up the road here, after a high of 25C this afternoon, but still noticeable. Only a few spits and spots of rain so far and feeling muggy. Indoors it remains very warm and doggie is sleeping on the kitchen tiles this evening in preference to her usual bed.
  16. The heat has swept this Hummingbird Hawk Moth up north. The first one I've seen in the garden for, I think, 15yrs.
  17. Heavy dew on the car earlier this morning. After a sunny start to the day, now a fair bit of cloud cover. Less breeze than yesterday, temp 17C. Yesterday evening's sunset/twilight was fantastic. The pic does not do it justice.
  18. Well-broken cloud this morning. The most significant weather feature is quite a stiff breeze, which, although the temp is registering 22C, makes it feel coolish. After a couple of overcast damp days, the garden seems to have sprung back to life. The Buddleia which is just coming into full bloom is covered with Honey bees and various hoverflies, and many of the usual garden birds have returned. Some of the conifers, though, are showing signs of drought, with yellowing of needles at their growing tips.
  19. Actually, I would love to visit Japan, whatever the weather. Not that I think the opportunity will arise. Too auld, now, and what with doggie and mundane responsibilities. Ageing is a "B", however I don't intend to grow old (er) gracefully.
  20. Discovered this in a Lilac bush today - very conveniently constructed next to the wood-store.....now decisions, whether to leave this rather beautiful structure be, or deal with it? Wasps have not been a nuisance here, this year, and I don't generally have a big problem with them around in limited numbers, and they are good pollinators, but....I may still be seeking some advice. I am presuming the nest is occupied by larvae at present. There are just one or two wasps on the wall of the nest which appear to be guarding the entrance.
  21. These are literally the only chicks, apart from sparrows, I've seen around here.
  22. Not seen that here, but yes still mild with partial cloud cover, humid. Took dog for a walk in short sleeves this evening. Actually, I would like to see more insects around as a bereft swallow has been singing and has started to investigate the barn again - maybe a late brood?
  23. Just to add, in case you trip over or become ill, take advantage of the https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/free-ehic-card/ It may not be available next year after the brexit palaver.
