  1. Yes, HC. I was apparently under heavy snow/sleet earlier today, when in fact I caught a glimpses of sun. Anyway, currently, complete cloud cover, temp 2C, a nagging breeze from the NE and showers crossing the hills.
  2. Recently had a few sleety showers here, but looking north at the hills, the snow-line is dropping. Having checked weather information on the forum, I've decided to cancel my proposed visit to Berwickshire tomorrow, which is really disappointing as I haven't seen my wee-est boy for about a month now. On a more positive note, hope the ski runs get a good top up.
  3. The band of sleet/snow is relentlessly creeping northwards towards my location, according to the radar, that is. Feels bitter outside. Hope the roads remain unaffected overnight as I intend to visit daughter in Border territory tomorrow.
  4. Caught the edge of a snow shower an hour or so ago, , and have to say I'm thoroughly tired of woolly jumpers, woolly socks, fleeces, thermal gloves, scarfs, topping up the oil-tank etc etc etc. Need to feel the sun's warmth on my skin now and not before time !
  5. I was lucky enough to witness the return to Balgavies, last year, alone in the hide, as the others had given up hope. (as posted in this thread) She was later than expected and there had been growing concern. But I had noticed that afternoon, that the resident crows, cormorant and heron appeared to be in a flap. The cormorants normally roost in the tree where the nest is. 2017 arrival <br:><a href=%22http-::oi57.ti.textClipping
  6. Osprey Green BF has returned to SWT Balgavies, 28th March, a week or so earlier than last year. The hide will be stowed out over Easter, but I might manage an evening visit later this week.
  7. Spring cleaning today. Hope I've not pre-empted FI predictions.

    Lecht Mine

    From the album: ciel's pics

I have often passed this site, but given a fine afternoon with the benefit of extra daylight hours earlier this week, I decided to detour and attempt the short walk from the Lecht Mine car park. The track, however, was impassable, shin-deep in mud and thawing snowdrifts. "Mining first took place at Lecht in the late eighteenth century, when the York Mining Company established workings here on land forfeited to the government following the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion. Both ironstone and manganese ore were mined at the site and were transported to Culnakyle, near Nethybridge, for smelting. The most prominent feature of the mining landscape at Lecht is a two-storeyed, rubble-built building with a large arched doorway, which was restored and re-roofed with local slate in the 1980s. It dates from a second, post-1841 phase of activity at the mine, and probably served as a crushing mill, powered by a water wheel measuring almost 8m in diameter which was set at one of its gable walls. Other remains include a mill lade, dumps of waste material, and mine workings which consist of vertical shafts and adits which have been driven at a shallow angle into the hillside. When production reached its peak during the 1840s, 63 people were employed at the mine. By 1847, however, cheap imports of manganese from Russia made it unprofitable and the mine closed." https://canmore.org.uk/site/74949/lecht-ironstone-mine
  9. My washing is currently on the pulley - an essential piece of equipment for Scottish weather.
  10. Experiencing a rash of heavy hail showers at the mo. Temp 2C, still, and almost total cloud cover. This has put an end to any gardening ambitions for this morning, anyway.
  11. Can't give any exact figures regarding locals, but the daff season is quite short and traditionally attracted local women and the travelling community who would then move on to the berries later in the year. Just to add, where I stay, at least, the business of daffodil growing has greatly increased over the past 10 yrs or so.
  12. Lights on here too! It has been a miserable rainy, dark and foggy day. Temp has ranged from 3C - 6C, total cloud cover and nae wind. Had one of my senior moments this morning and mis-timed a meeting in Fraserburgh.Fortunately it did not cause too many problems. On the subject of spring and the growing season, I don't know whether this is just skewed perception, but the daffodil flowering stems appear to be much shorter than in previous years. There were, however, a few EU persons ( 6 maybe) picking in the neighbouring field when I arrived home . The bulbs, of course, are the main product and lifted later. And, in regard to a political observation relevant to my location, I have never noticed this advert in previous years. Perhaps a sign of continental EU citizens deciding the UK is not the chosen destination. http://jobsgalore.uk/daffodil-pullers/
  13. Had a pleasant stroll along the beach at Arbroath this afternoon. The temp soared to 12C and the spring-like conditions brought forth caravaners, bikers.......and men in shorts . Shower clouds gathering now as I type.
  14. It's a fine morning, here, sunny with a few Ci and Cs around, temp 7C and a slight breeze from the west. The visibility is crystal clear, the hills are pin-sharp. Underfoot is still very soggy though. While in the field with doggie, noticed the commercial daffs have had a growth spurt over recent days.
  15. Interesting. A few years ago (maybe around10) an agent from somewhere called to ask permission to lift nearby snowdrops "in the green." He was sent packing, of course.
  16. Could some kind person please explain to a luddite (me) how to make one of these smart links e.g. @"a poster" ? It seems that the technique might save some unnecessary quoting.
  17. Yes HC, I have noticed this, only yesterday. Their flowering season also appears to be longer this year.
  18. Thanks, Polar. I agree. Must improve my ID skill. I had, after eventually eliminating harrier, decided it was a "Scottish" eagle - I never considered it was a golden, the bird was clearly too small. It flew off having had a scrap with one larger and two smaller BoPs, but I had lost sight of the others which either had gone to ground or disappeared over the ridge.
  19. Spent a relaxing hour or so at Montrose Basin yesterday afternoon. It was a bit breezy, rippling the water in the ponds, and so the Kingfisher preferred hovering over the water to perching on the edge of the pond. The best pic I could manage. Some Wigeons from last week - they were still around yesterdaybut will be preparing to fly north soon. Apart from the above there were around 30 Mallards, a few Teal, numerous Eiders and a Bullfinch in the trees in the carpark

These two were fairly fearless, which might indicate they are habituated to human intrusion. and also, that they were quite hungry.
