  1. Certainly interesting weather - sudden squalls, the last one was accompanied by horizontal hail - then almost complete lulls with glimpses of blue sky and sunshine. Not sure what to get up to today.
  2. Much the same here (NW mainland). I think the strongest gusts, so far, occurred during the wee small hours.
  3. Not a great day for out and about on the Ardnamurchan peninsula. It's not feeling particularly cold (9C) earlier, but there were frequent heavy and squally downpours. My reference for the weather at the mo. (apart from net weather forecasts ) is how loud the woods are soughing.

    Castle Tioram

    From the album: ciel's pics

Castle Tioram is the traditional seat of Clan MacDonald of Clan Ranald, a branch of Clan Donald. Castle Tioram was seized by Government forces in around 1692 when Clan Chief Allan of Clanranald joined the Jacobite Court in France, despite having sworn allegiance to the British Crown. A small garrison was stationed in the castle until the Jacobite Uprising of 1715 when Allan recaptured and torched it, purportedly to keep it out of the hands of Hanoverian forces. It has been unoccupied since that time, although there are some accounts suggesting it was partially inhabited thereafter including for the storage of firearms from the De Tuillay in the 1745 Jacobite Uprising and Lady Grange's account of her kidnapping.
  5. Spent 30mins or so today watching Sea Eagles soaring over Loch Sunart.
  6. Watery sunshine, nae wind, lots of low cloud, mild, a few light showers and rainbows, today. The changing landscapes were magnificent. I love this neck of the woods. However, I am keeping an eye on the analyses for later this week.
  7. A couple of pics from today:- Fallow deer, Loch Buie, Mull. This diving duck is a first spot for me and I did not recognize the species. After some raking around on the net, I think it is a male Smew – an uncommon winter migrant in these parts. ( big crop!) Male Smew, Loch Spelve. A few weeks ago there was, unusually, the female of the species, a “red-headed” Smew over in the east at Balgavies Loch
  8. Back to the present, calm, grey and drizzle all day. Took doggie for a short walk in the woods - mud a'ways.
  9. Quite a different day from yesterday, here, ( NW coast) instead of sliding on ice, it was a case of slipping on wet oak leaves. Today It was very grey and misty from mid-morning, but although the temp was a fairly constant 4C with a very light wind, it felt not too bad. Whatever the weather, the scenery is great. One from yesterday:- Rhum, I think.
  10. Caught this fella stretching during a 30 second hail shower. He's been in the wars, I think.
  11. Beautiful frosty day in Ardnamurchan. Mostly sunny with temp hovering between 1-4C and a slight NW breeze. There were a couple of brief hail showers. The snow line is quite high, and I hope it remains there. Loch Sunart
  12. I've not ventured outside today, but from in-doors it looked sunny, but house felt cold. I really need to re-establish former walking habits and routines to keep the old pegs supple. Doggy is a bit of a worry at the mo, she has an enlarged sub-mandibular gland which I just noticed yesterday. Off to vet tomorrow morning and hoping it is simply the result of a minor infection. This evening, Countryfile has had pieces about two of my favourite places, the Cairn o' Mount and the Montrose Basin. Going to the NW coast later this week to count down the days to the winter solstice.
  13. Well, my location avoided the snow showers,, - just a waft of cold drizzle this afternoon- but I'm a wee bit unhappy about forum censorship of any mild persuasive contributions ? In fact, here, it has been a mainly cold, sunny and frosty day - a day for wrapping up well and making the best of what the weather had to offer. Fire on now, book out and doggy on knee.
  14. Same here,mq. The pond in the garden has shrunk to a few puddles. I'm anticipating more rain later, though. With grey skies the low light level is depressing at this time of year. Apart from that, it is calm, temp around 6C and not feeling too cold - the CH thermostat clicked off around 8am.
  15. It was a fine, sunny late autumn afternoon here but it was also cold and breezy, with icy ditches up the glen. This little red, along with a few others were the only wildelife spots.
  16. Always pleased to see these Yellowhammers, especially when the numbers are reported as falling. That one puddle at this time of year seems to attract many different species. They all ignore the formal birdbath on the patio. Go on - take the plunge. (photo taken though double glazing)
  17. A cold gusty northerly this morning made north facing rooms indoors cold, and being out of doors quite unpleasant despite clear skies and sunshine. One or two passing rain showers during the afternoon provided a lovely rainbow. Temp 6C at present and the wind has dropped.
  18. Lovely clear, crisp and frosty blue-sky morning. No breeze to speak of. According to Edzell Castle Pleasance weather station the temp is 5C. It feels a touch chillier than that tho’ on the early morning dog walk. A wee flock of Redwings around. .
  19. Popped into SWT Balgavies briefly yesterday. The resident Cormorant community The Greylags were somewhat annoyed at the intruder Goldeneye drake Not sure about the ID of this duck. There was an entry in the log from a couple of days ago that there was a Redhead on the loch. I'll suggest Redhead drake transitioning from eclipse plumage, but if anyone knows better.......
  20. That image is sure to add grist to the sheep farmers' mill - and to those who are anti lynx re-introduction projects.
  21. Winter is a great season for observing water birds. 7C here at the mo, but feels chillier. Slight breeze from the NW and cloud encroaching. If weather holds, I'll probably have a walk later today at NNR St Cyrus, armed with bins and camera.
