  1. Visited Dirleton Castle and grounds today, having a few hours to fill while my dog was receiving her third, and penultimate cycle of chemo in Edinburgh. Quite a few "Sidneys" in the grounds. Have to say, I was quite surprised, as I thought the red variety were well established in East Lothian.
  2. From the album: ciel's pics

A key fortress on the Edinburgh to Berwick-upon-Tweed road, Dirleton Castle changed hands on multiple occasions during the Wars of Scottish Independence. Later it became home to the notorious Ruthven family who were involved in the ‘Gowrie Conspiracy’. Dirleton was destroyed by General Monck during the Wars of Three Kingdoms.
  3. The Swallow nest in the garage is beginning to look a bit overcrowded.
  4. On the subject of badgers, I never understood the BBC's obsession with filming them for the Spring/Autumn Watch series. I haven't viewed the latest edition. I only know of one sett around here. However, I rented a cottage in rural midlothian earlier this year when my dog was receiving daily radiotherapy at the Dick Vet. Came across numerous road-killed badgers in that area.
  5. Grey skies here too, but relatively mild and no wind to speak of. I'm hoping to head for, and catch up on the garden weeds.
  6. They look almost ready to fledge, PM. I still don't know the location in the garden of my Wren's nest, but the male continues to sing from various posts.
  7. I thought I was going to miss out on the action - but no - an absolute downpour with hail mixed in at the mo and three + resounding booms.
  8. Had a quick look at lightningmaps.org - there seems to be a line of strikes from Inverness to Buckie. A few also just to the north of me.
  9. ^ Yes, there is some frantic foraging at the moment. He looks a bit weighed down.
  10. After a warm, humid and overcast start to the day, it's now warm, humid and more or less sunny. Temp a very pleasant 18C with a gentle breeze from the SW.
  11. LOLs, HC. Yesterday morning, when I turned on the outside tap, the hose did a birl. No damage done though, just a new hairdo needed .
  12. Some observations from the garden, this fine morning. Housebuilding Mobbing Sunbathing
  13. Hazy, humid and hot-ish best describes this morning. Temp 20C and a light breeze from the south. Gave the veggies a good soaking earlier on. Apart from some essential stuff to be done in the early afternoon, I'm going to have a relaxing day, generally pottering in the garden and enjoying this fine spell of weather..
  14. Well, I wasn''t expecting an electrical storm this evening. Lots of flashes and bangs with torrential rain just now.
  15. Paid a quick visit to the sand martin quarry this afternoon, but there is still not much activity. The quarry has been in a gradual state of collapse over the years, and so maybe the habitat is becoming less safe for their burrows. Rabbits, however, after having been almost eradicated last year are back in numbers. This poor chap appears to have an injury to the right side of his head. The left ear seems to be working fine, though!
  16. ^ A similar story here. The last time I was at SWT Balgavies ( return of the male osprey posted above ), there was a note in the hide that one of the regular swan pair had been killed by a collie. The reserve does tolerate dogs-on-leads in the reserve, but a couple – descriptions provided in the note – had been walking with the dog, out of control and unleashed when the attack took place. I think there is a video of the incident too. I’ve not been back to Balgavies since, so don’t know whether or not the couple have been traced (or prosecuted).
  17. A slightly better pic this morning. He's certainly in top form at the moment.
  18. LOL mardatha,. They're all digesting the (english) manifestos.
  19. A right mixture of weather in the NE today. Sunny and feeling mild in the morning at home. Temp 16C over the Cairn. Later, monochrome grey sky and feeling decidedly chilly in the Bloo Toon, with a stiffish SW wind, although the car still registered a temp 16C. Back home in the evening, cool but with beautiful clouds. .
  20. I fear another poor butterfly year, in this part of the world anyway. Only have seen an few small whites this year so far.
  21. I know, knocker. in haste, I had not adjusted the ISO from the previous evening , plus I knew if I had ventured outside the dog, who follows me everywhere, would have scared all birds away.
  22. After a grey and damp start to the day, it turned out to a beautiful afternoon and evening. Temp 17C around 6pm. I took my evening meal of haggis, neeps and tatties on the patio, watching a fine sundown.
  23. A Wren, knocker. They have a loud song for their diminutive size and are quite secretive in their habits.
  24. Didn't initially intend to post this very bad photo (taken thru' window), but it maybe was the one chance of catching him out in the open. He has been very noisy recently, but always manages to evade detection. I still have no idea where his nest, or nests are, but something clearly alarmed him this morning. .
