  1. Sunshine and cold rain showers, here, with a biting northerly breeze. Temp 3C. Some snow is sticking to the hill tops. There have been some fine rainbows too. Off out soon with a lump of coal in one hand and shortbread in the other - scottish cliches, I know, but neighbours like it, I think.
  2. A nice first foot this morning. Probably one from a winter roost a couple of miles from home. I counted 13 birds at the roost earlier in December. Most of these individuals are the result of the successful Aberdeenshire Red Kite re-introduction project.
  3. Yes, best wishes to all on the thread for 2017. I'm a bit of a party - pooper tonight having cancelled Hoggers on account of a sair heid, sair thrapple and a runny runny neb. After a snooze just now, hopefully will bring in the new year, briefly, with good neighbours.
  4. Just an interesting article on how climate change may effect bird migration Some species may be capable of adaptation, and migrate earlier while other long distant migrants may be disadvantaged. All down to the available food supply in the breeding territory. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2016/dec/28/climate-change-driving-birds-migrate-early-research-reveals-edinburgh-global-warming
  5. Know how you feel HC. I'm off under the duvet soon too. - picked up some bug from daughter and co at the end of last week . It was, however, a fine calm sunny day, although the temp was only 1C around 09.30 and car needed de-icing. .The snow is now confined to the higher, east/north facing hill- tops, and (as far as I'm concerned, at the moment ) it can stay there .
  6. Clear and calm earlier today. Temp 2C Shiny crescent moon with a bright planet to the south east - Jupiter? I think - it was getting too light to capture a pic. Some overnight snow on the hills. Becoming quite grey and ominous now. Snow-gates closed both ways on the B974
  7. An aurora alert has just been issued - if you have clear skies.
  8. Watched mist forming on late afternoon, winter walk with dog.
  9. December's been a bit like autumn with me - not complaining though.
  10. Mild, dark, damp and overcast this morning on leaving home this morning, 7C and no wind to speak of. Pleasant light at sun-up later and signs of a break in the sky to the south east. Arbroath Coast (ipad from train) Heading west it became gloomier - interesting to watch the change. overhead - Glasgow grey, mild and drizzly. (grumpy taxi drivers too) Back home later, still 7C.
  11. If you are lucky enough to have a clear sky around now, the moon is quite spectacular - large and bright orange. Tried to get a photo, (with the lens cap on ) but after sorting the prob, the moon had more or less disappeared behind clouds. btw it has turned quite mild and still - 10C
  12. Mildish early this morning, 7C, then a nasty chilly wnw breeze blew in during the morning. Calmer and more pleasant during the afternoon, Now around 5C. Terrific sunrise , Kumho summer/winter tyres are on my Mitsu now. They have been driven over sheet ice and soggy mud, and seem fine, but I could not comment on the niceties.
  13. Your link appears to be somewhat out of date - at least pre 2014. St Kilda's seabirds in decline Seabird Decline 1999-2015 kittiwakes 89% razorbills 68% fulmars 56% guillemots 53% source: National Trust for Scotland Latest counts in the last few months on one of the St Kilda islands, Boreray, and two adjoining sea stacs, have confirmed the dramatic downward trends. Populations of kittiwakes, fulmars, razorbills and guillemots have all plummeted by 60 per cent or more since 2000. https://theferret.scot/st-kilda-seabird-populations-crashing-climate-pollution/
  14. There does seem to be accruing evidence regarding the impact of climate change on bird populations and distribution. https://www.bto.org/science/climate-change
  15. Around Loch Fyne, some drizzle, mainly thin sunshine, a breeze and max temp 10C. Quite a fine day really - still 9C
  16. Not sure if this site contains the specific the info you are looking for - you can navigate to different areas. http://www.worldclimate.com/cgi-bin/grid.pl?gr=N57W002
  17. I came across this link when looking for further information in respect of a topic in the SG089, OU short course. Lots of useful basics with overheads and lecture notes. http://homepages.abdn.ac.uk/nph120/meteo/
  18. Just had a visit from part-time neighbours up from Edinburgh today asking to borrow a dehumidifier. They have had a burst pipe in the loft. Their house was wrecked in 2010 ( four inches of ice at ground floor level preventing them from entering, collapsed ceilings etc) and subsequently was totally reconstructed. But apparently there are two unsealed air vents in the loft?? which have caused the problem again although they do have that thing that controls the heating by phone, and they use it when not living here, they say.
  19. I did, with some minor difficulty! The Cairn O' Mount was like glass with just a few scatterings of sand on the steepest slipperiest bits. I did wonder why I only met a couple of vehicles traveling in the opposite direction. Temp dropped to -2C on the Cairn but to -4C at Banchory. Otherwise, well treated roads and a fine sunny day - sub zero now.
  20. Just inspected weather conditions outside - frost free, no wind, a starry sky and temp 1C - quite nice! It means I can use my preferred cross country route up to the NE this morning rather than do battle with the Aberdeen traffic chaos.
  21. It continued to be so cold here, and along the riverbank this autumn afternoon. After standing still for a minute or two and removing gloves in order to take some photos, I was shivering – an age thing probably. Anyway, a couple of shaky pics of the Rocks of Solitude,The Burn, where the N. Esk passes over a narrow channel through the Highland Boundary Fault.
  22. A sunny day, but penetrating cold. It has been sub - zero all day here. Just had doggie out for her last walk and noted these odd ,cumulonimbus?, clouds again in an otherwise clear sky. A bit of a guess, but I think they are hanging around the North Sea in the Aberdeen/Stonehaven/Inverbervie area.
