  1. A couple of these rather attractive Red-legged Partridges have been making regular garden visits recently. Unfortunately, I have not seen any of the declining native Grey Partridge species around this year. From earlier in the week, this Starling is still transitioning from his spotty winter plumage.
  2. It's a male Orange-tip butterfly, PM. The females are white with black wing-tips.
  3. Pretty dreich in Peterhead today - mostly overcast. Temp maxed at 10C and there was a noticeable breeze from the SE (I think). I had around an hour or so to fill in the early afternoon so paid a first ever visit to Slains Castle, reputedly Bram Stoker's inspiration for Count Dracula, and had hoped to continue along the cliffs to spot puffins, but time did not allow and I was not really suitably attired for a cliff-top trail ! The rough ground above the cliffs was awash with Red Campion.
  4. Very nice set of photos, knocker. Seems like a beautiful weather day too.
  5. Mostly blue skies at my location, but enjoyment of out-of-door activities (gardening in this case) tempered by that darned northerly wind ! Temp 9C.
  6. I listened to this live - quite beautiful. Not sure about the human contribution to the chorus, though.
  7. Checked out the local Sand Martin colony this afternoon and it was not exactly a hive of activity - maybe three pairs around. They were too fast and I was not sharp enough to catch them on camera. The wagtail kept a close eye on proceedings, however. .
  8. Slight overnight frost, a sunny start to the day with a slight haze. Temp 3C - no wind to speak of. Heading off to a meeting in Banff shortly, so it should be a pleasant journey.
  9. PM ( and NL), out of real interest, how many lambs over the years have you found with eyes pecked out by crows. I'm not doubting this does happen. https://raptorpersecutionscotland.wordpress.com/2014/12/16/new-study-suggests-that-killing-crows-is-mostly-pointless-most-of-the-time/ This study maybe worthy of note in regard to the impact of corvid predation on other species.
  10. A few observations from this evening:- Not many swallows about yet. He's still on his ownsome. In full song despite the gloom and chilly breeze. (he's still up there singing as I type) Blossom from a self-seeded wild cherry tree.
  11. Lenticular clouds? - from home, earlier this week at dusk.
  12. Passing rain showers, breezy, Temp 7C. Clachnaben yesterday - just a smattering of hill snow remaining today.
  13. I'm sure EJ and eggs will survive, hopefully anyway.
  14. Thin layer of cloud this morning, but sun peeking out occasionally, making it pleasant enough for any outdoor activity. Temp 10C and no wind. Not relishing the prospect of the forecast Arctic blast, but some rain would be welcome. Water levels are very low. West Water, Glen Lethnot.
  15. Some moorland birds at their nest sites, yesterday. there were 30+ birds in this flock Back home, Jackdaws have decided home is a (fortunately disused) chimney pot.
  16. See who turned up this evening, a bit ragged, but a day earlier than last year.
  17. Yes, they are noisy blighters though can be amusing to watch.
  18. Yes, and the white outer tail feathers, more obvious in this shot. Corn Bs have plain brown tails. Could well be, knocker.
  19. This little brown bird caught my attention this morning, a Corn Bunting - I think - or maybe a female Reed Bunting? Wagtail pair are setting up home in the Barn or thereabouts. Eyes up now for the return of the Barn Swallows. They should be back, all being well, by the end of the week. Edit: Finally decided the bird in the daffs is a female Reed Bunting
  20. Clear and frosty early this morning - now quite overcast and grey. Hardly a breath of wind. Temp 9C. The windmill sails are stationary.
  21. A cold start earlier this morning, car was covered in ice first thing. Pleasant enough in the sun now, but still that nagging NWN breeze making it feel cool in the shade. Temp currently 10C. Having completed her radiotherapy treatment, Oagie enjoyed an off-the-lead walk today, her first since February.
  22. Environment Secretary Roseanna Cunningham commented: "Bad weather and a poor start to the year made 2016 a tough 12 months for Scotland's butterfly population. These difficulties can be clearly seen across the UK with some species reporting a decline to their lowest levels." She said butterfly numbers were indicators of a healthy environment - and land managers could apply for funding to support butterflies through the Agri-Environment Climate Scheme (AECS) ( unable to copy link, for some reason, but the article can be found on BBC Scotland website) EDIT: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-39569824
