  1. Leafs – does anyone recall pressing leafs in between pages of books. I can (just) remember collecting colourful autumnal sycamore, oak and beech leafs on the way home from school. Simple hobby, I suppose by today’s standards.

Anyway, nowadays, I let most of the leaves mulch away in the garden to enrich the poor subsoil hereabouts.

I work in the construction industry and attend economic briefings on a regular basis. Firstly we haven't left the EU so the impacts that the B  of E talked about are linked to our future trade status with the rest of the world and the impacts tarrifs and custom arrangements would have.  I can assure you the construction industry one of the main drivers of our economy is very close to the edge and we haven't left yet. The best case scenario sees  at least 5 quarters of recession with little or no growth. the worst case see's at least 10 quarters of recession and a likely 10 year period to get back to were we where in 2010. Leaving the EU only benefits those who speculate on uncertainty Joe public can go whistle whilst the fat cats get fatter.

    On this topic, I agree.

Further, I listened to a farmer from Wales on 'Farming Today' this morning and she was of the view that post brexit (if that does indeed occur) there would be an increase in animal cruelty and environmental pollution, simply because some folk would believe that the UK was de-regulated and unnacountable (an aspiration of idealogues)

And further, it would be more honest if the current govt would publicise the actual cost of the already spent £sd on the whole dastardly brexit project - probably enough to fund a hospital or two

Yes, but your missing the point, people getting interested in weather makes them more likely to become meteorologists, also, i thought you were worried about climate change, if we suddenly had an unexpected downturn in temperatures (not talking ice age scenarios) over the pole and an upturn in sea ice growth, that would actually make us (perhaps temporarily) less susceptible to the effects of climate change, so therefore shouldn't one actually be wishing for events that would probably lead to at the very least a scenario where we have more time to make provisions.

    :blink2: Rather odd logic ^

What I find surprising/concerning is that a few on here who profess a degree of interest in weather/climate appear to have little regard for its impact.

  4. I was in the Inverurie area today, and I have to say it was a chilly/sleety unpleasant experience (weather wise). Drove through intermittent rain and low, blinding sunshine.

Positives were some nice skyscapes over the hills and  over the N Sea on the way home - didn't have camera on this occasion :oldmellow:.

  5. A chilly walk today in Mullach Wood – OC there under clearish skies and no appreciable wind. As it gradually clouded over later in the afternoon, the temp rose to 2C. The decrease in daylight was particularly noticeable for some reason today, with gloom pervading around 15:30.

Three of the Nine Stanes of Mullach:

The stone circle site looked very unloved due to major forest operations all around and a tatty information notice. Hope the Forestry Commission have urgent plans to re-forest all the scarred hillsides with native trees.

Jan 1984. One of my favourite weather months ever. From the pub doorway. Would be very happy with a repeat even though Dec 1983 was pretty meh.

I don't actually mind looking at snowy scenes, I just don't particularly like being in amongst it.

    However, as needs must:

The grandsons, Glen Esk, Jan 2010 (I think), might have been Dec 2009.

No-one will be complaining if the 00z GFS comes off,

As you probably know, Catch, I might, :oldmellow: although I do wish the Scottish ski resorts a prosperous season.

As unavoidable as winter is, I would prefer blue skies with bright crisp dry days.

It might not make a dent in 'human-caused' global warming in the next 1000 years on average, but in short spells it surely will, climate change was well underway by the last bog-standard solar min and we got the coldest Dec for 100 years and the second coldest on record and the coldest winter for 30 years, with a Dalton minimum..........

I'm not suggesting that a cold winter/s will not occur, just that, if they do, it does not infer that dramatic long-term scenarios or trends of brutal cold, volcanic eruptions, famine etc, etc, etc. (electroverse stuff) will occur.

And I'm more convinced that volcanic eruptions were substantially causal to the (500-150yrs ago] historic periods of colder than average temps and not the resultant.

Yes sleety, I agree... I'm also of the firm belief we are due a brutally cold winter inside the next 5 years!! Not because I'm cold bias, or that I want it... Its just a scenario that is long overdue!! Solar output is dramatically low at present, and I do feel this plays a major role on how the jet stream behaves! A southerly tracking jet is what we need for some proper cold... These scenarios increase with a weakening and erratic jet!! Another concern of mine is the rapid amount of ice loss that is now occurring.... When states are arguing over who should have access to the new shipping routes being opened up through arctic areas, pretty much sums up how bad the ice loss is. Just imagine a complete collapse of the Greenland ice shelf!! Perhaps 15-20feet in sea level rise!! Heaven forbid... A shutdown of the gulf stream due to it. Siberian winters to the Northern hemisphere.. All speculation of course, but a possibility all the same. NASA is basically forecasting a repeat of the Dalton Minimum which occurred 1790-1830....but they give no mention of the brutal cold, famine, crop loss and volcanic eruptions that occurred with it... Interesting, yet potentially dangerous times ahead.
