  1. The 2010 december snow really attracted the wildlife into garden Saw my first ever Waxwing that year, Had Red legged Partridge in garden, Normally they stay other side of field, Had Magpie who got very friendly and would take shelled peanuts from my hand, This winter due I think to rain just not getting many birds in, Having trouble keeping seed in feeders dry [ just getting mushy] Seen no Robins here for few months, I know prolonged very cold not good for birds, but think the very wet also create issues for some breeds, The sight of Hedgehogs here now very rare. The only one saw last year was unfortunatly dead, Was not road kill but in neighbours front garden, Only few neighbours here,[ Rural] We all decided not use Slug pellets, so fingers crossed might start seeing hedgehogs again, Got some really big slugs in garden this winter, result of wet weather combined with slug pellet ban,,,,,,,,, And just to add Green woodpeckers enjoying the soft ground
  2. With at long last some reasonable dry settled weather, The model watchers can concentrate on Strat warning and how models will deal with it, Should help increase knowledge of this fascinating science, In reallity suspect the rollercoaster to start, should be entertaining
  3. Just seen one for South west on bbc with David Braine, Liked his quote " Wettest drought every seen"
  4. Hares out on field today being rather frisky even witnessed little boxing between them, Little Egrets seem to love the flooded fields, Pesky comorants also around,They really do look prehistoric when outstretched wings drying,
  5. Thanks for tips on my wildlife garden project, With forecast more settled weather hope to get out and move project foreward, Did anyone have issues during summer with bites? Up by wildlife pond had swarms mosquitos, The bites from them very nasty this year, My wife finished up casuality and being put on antibiotics, Did see item on news about the subject, I installed pump in pond to try keep running water, In mornings the dead mosquitos formed film over pond. Think the wet summer increased mosquitos, but why the bites caused extreme reaction is mystery, I was getting really inflammed bites and as say my wife experienced really severe reaction,
  6. Seems that we heading towards settled spell for week or so, Maybe get out in garden for clean and tidy up, Hope after mid January can get some frost in the ground
  7. Spent few months in Imus Cavite in Philippines,After few weeks of daily blue skys and hot sunshine, started to crave some variation in weather, Gets boring saying "Hot day" every day, We British talk about our weather, because so changeable, Have family in Oslo and same there in winter, Don't really talk much about how cold it is or will it snow today, We weather obsessed in this country,,,,,,,,
  8. I created wildlife pond in garden, Leaving unmowen area with hope of seeing what developes, Sown buttercup seeds and read that they need cold weather to germinate, Wondering what other wildflower seeds could try adding to my grass patch, Also wondering if could grow seeds in tray and plant seedlings into grass when developed, Gardening not my strong subject, any tips to help attract insects and butterfllies would be good, Planted couple Buddlia,
  9. That makes UK winters frustrating but interesting when we do get cold spell, Most people don't hang onto every weather forecast, the surprise when it suddenly turns from mild rainy to cold snowy always catches people out
  10. Remember sitting on Quay in Poole back in 60s watching the filming of Hero's of Telemark, was raining then
  11. The Flora around here seem to be acting in season, Maybe the gloomy days still telling it's winter
  12. Looks like some dry weather here down south, which will help to dry out, Will be interesting to see how January pans out, From the past know that weather can go from one extreme to another, Good post on model thread showing examples from past winters, Just hope 2013 not so wet,
  13. Seen no redwings or fieldfare this winter which is unusual, Barn owl been out hunting in day time, think taking advantage of any dry weather,
  14. Again for third time this year people in my village experiencing flooding, Unfortunatly it's the same familys every time, I can see few houses up for sale after this.but how on earth they will sell them after this years flooding is the Question..............Great to see the new nature thread
  15. Just posted on new nature observation thread about impact the wet year having on nature, Also again for third time this year some people in my village are experiencing flooding, This morning water again entered there houses, We do need some settled dry weather, but will need more than few days of dry, Could you imagine if we did get severe cold spell soon how badly it would impact people who will be struggling to dry out, What I am sure of is that the weather will not take account of peoples feelings, Any observations on nature would be welcome on new thread
  16. With the very wet early summer we experienced 2012 the Kingfisher lost fledglings due to flooded nest site, All I know is that the territory Kingfisher held is now abandond, The ecology of area of river I care for been badly affected by our wet year, Will recover but water vole population badly hit even fish impacted by flooding and fast flowing water
  17. Have small group Roe deer that I observe daily from bedroom window, There rutting takes place July/August with fawns being born end May, after mating the female holds embryo till december/early Jan when protein released to promote growth, ensuring birth for when weather favorable and plenty food available, Fawns usually born end May, Last year Fawns born much earlier following the mild December, The year before when we experienced very cold December of 2010. fawns born rather later around second week Iune, Considering growth protein released December, I think the cold 2010 December delayed protein release, Due to very mild weather around last winter. reasonable to suggest protein released early, I think that we should have early births again for spring 2013,
  18. In the bleak midwinter,,,,,,,,,,,mid to late January, We are surrounded by sea and the Atlantic waiting to pounce, Surprises me that we actually get severe winters
  19. Wildlife is proactive and respond to there enviroment, Birds migrate early if conditions turn severe early.
  20. Have idea for pinned wildlife observation thread, Wildlife and weather very much linked, Much interest in how weather patterns affect our nature from plants to mammels, Some sort of pinned thread could be of interest, Recording early arrivals birds etc, Would be willing to put some time into such a thread. Also help with identification of species and what can be done to help wildlife in various severe weather situations, Being involved with my local wildlife trust and RSPB, I know people interested in wildlife and how weather changing there patterns,
  21. That's why think we were so lucky to have had couple reasonable cold spells over recent years, I am 64 years old, there have been 12 winters in my life that been classed snowy, That totally from living Midlands and now South coast,
