  1. yes, and I don't even like christmas pudding, also think the hilly members will have a slow thaw during Wednesday evening, as less cold air moves in from the Atlantic, not exactly a great event us low down members are missing out on, as here air would be even milder when the Atlantic breaks through

Cold with sunny spells for much of the day after a cold start with a ground frost. A spell of rain around 4pm then dry and partly cloudy this evening. Maximum 7.6, minimum 0.3. Wind light NNE.

Yesterday: cold and dry with sunny intervals. Maximum 8.0, minimum 3.3. Wind light N.

Away in Spain last week, staying near Cadiz. Mainly sunny, maxima 23-25C, expected to be much cooler this week.

cor, lucky you! my favourite temp range!

Would be happy to take this Autumn weather at Christmas after last years awful winter, least it's cold enough to be called winter weather, this Autumn with out doubt is the best for several years, not seen the colours this good and strong for a long time. Proper cold bonfire night was just a bonus, good old style shivering, wrapped up warm affair, lovely!

Disagree don't want this at Xmas, wind and rain no thanks!

  4. models 00Z's trended towards GFS from around 9th, with Atlantic domination, sort of setup you'd expect in Dec to Feb, but with it being early Nov and snow not really possible, I wouldn't be surprised if ECM of yesterday was right, I don't expect the Atlantic to dominate until around 21st Nov

November cool and unsettled becoming stormy towards the end

December, stormy start, calming down but the first proper hit of winter mid December and over christmas

January starting cold but becoming stormy until then end of the month

February a cold snowy month with winds mostly from the east

    March who cares, it's spring:pardon:

Dec, mainly mild and wet, PM air at times giving snow to hills, above average rain and temps

Jan, mainly mild, Atlantic lows to dominate, snow at times in Scotland as lows move away in the PM air, flooding possible, above average temps and rain

Feb, less mild generally, coolest month of the winter, snow down to low levels in the north during PM shots, wet, but not as wet as Dec and Jan

TBH, with SSTs currently being what they are, and irrespective of whatever the 'BOOM!' runs might suggest, any snowfall next-week will be confined to high ground away from the coast...Bog standard November weather, if you ask me...

Ed, that's why I don't mind if these charts fail! very selfish of me I know, but for my location it's too early for snow, kinda hoping GFS is right, I wanna see cold setups 4 weeks from now

OK, time to nail my colours to the mast.  Here's my thoughts on Winter 2016/17 (I'm completely unqualified but very keen!!!)

November - Temps slightly below average along with lower than average rainfall.  No UK notable snow events

December - First half of the month, above average temps in the south, average in the north along with average rainfall.  Second half of December will bring a rapid cool down with significant snowfall in Scotland and Northern England (lump on a white Christmas in these areas!).  Below average temps in the south but mainly dry.

January - A significant nationwide snow event will take place in the first half of the month emanating from a northerly that swings north easterly finally around to a full blown beasterly.  Second half of the month will be colder than average but dry.

February - Starts off benign but becomes a very stormy month (the Atlantic has to kick in eventually).  Above average temps and rainfall.

    What can go wrong?

Feb, I think you could be close!

  9. Just wondering the earliest date when snow becomes possible? (low levels south) Varies I know, high elevations/north will be earlier

say the 30th Nov '10 snow, if that was just 2 weeks earlier would it be sleet/rain?

    0r the 19th Nov '96 snow, just a week earlier sleet/rain?

if what ECM is showing now, of course would be rain but just a week later sleet? 2 weeks later snow? time of year by maybe just 14 days too early for the south here

I'd have preferred colder than average and wetter than average but it'll do. Lets just hope that the drier spells don't combine too much with the colder spells and the wetter spells with the milder spells or it could be a very frustrating search for snow.

I think that's the way winter works! at least in England, dry spells are timed for cold, Wet means mild, otherwise snow would be easy, no novelty

    Next week

    Not as cold

    Some rain at times

    Drier in the south

don't mind yet SS, as not even winter, let's have it mild for now, but GFS on last few runs seems to be looking very 2000+ normal in FI, with Atlantic air, by late Nov, I certainly think we will have usual sight, strong PV etc, no sign of cold gfs-0-216.png?12

A very foggy start here this morning... Riber castle looked stunning as she poked out of the fog as it slowly cleared... took the kids to a party in Belper this evening and i must say how beautiful the colours were as we drove through the twisting lanes... stunning to see at this late stage of the season... now its time to start getting this colder weather in and keep it here for 5 months...

should see sunnier weather from tomorrow, but rain risk friday

next Sunday looks vile, rain most of day for NW of the region, coming through Cheshire gap, probably 8° as well, summer's gone
