  1. Good evening A sunny day here, with a sharp dare I say, Spring-like feel, but a pleasant day nonetheless. Work done and the rest of the week off, always fills me with procrastination, where to start, what to do. Hard to shut the mind down from work, when so much will need to be done when you get back! My little sis is abit of a tattoo collector. She asked me to look up some Latin phrases which could associate with her love of family. I'm doing latin (in a horticultural sence) but searched the inter web for some interesting translations and I found this one, which seemed really apt for Snowlady and her family for tomorrow. I wish you well and send positive thoughts. Familia fortitudo mea ~ family is my strength

  3. Good evening all. I am, for now, ignoring the forecasts and forging on in the Garden with Spring and Summer in mind. Patio plants over wintered, now in their rightful places, seedlings repotted and waiting patiently for their time to shine. The fish have started to come out of their slumber at the bottom of the pond and I was thrilled to see some bull finches and coal tits ( only seen in my area once before) come back to the feeders. Moved my front room around, so I could sit at my recently brought French dining table circa 1900, a one of those saw it, been looking for months and finally found it moments in an antique store in KempTown, so I could sit and watch the bird life enjoying the food I put out, because it quite simply makes me happy whilst working on the laptop. Finally, had lunch with a very dear lifelong friend, life has been, well life, and we lost touch about five years ago through one thing and another. The test of a friend, is no matter how much time passes and what challenges us in those moments, they are all gone in an instant and you connect and understand each other in an instant, no matter the time spent apart. We sat and shared those times both, past, present and fears for the future. Ah, with time and life, comes a wisdom, we never thought we would grasp and understand when we were children. The sun was shining today and I certainly did positive things in its presence :-)
  4. Hi I just checked on my ipad, as I have been struggling with the same thing. I found if you press/hold over the text in question and highlight in blue and then delete the bits you don't want, but keeping the [ quote name=Keraunophile" post="2936890" timestamp="1393007970]bit at the beginning of the quote and the [/quote ] bit at the end! you will only post the text in between.Hope that's helpful and makes sense! I had to remove the spaces between the beginning [ and the end ] quote mark as it was showing as a quote! All the best.
  5. Thanks MK! I already follow it, it's a nice place to drop by and share stuff with fellow gardening enthusiasts :-)
  6. Hi Iceni, It was really strange, could feel the wind whipping up and could see the line coming towards us (the rain and hail was visible as it moved forward) and was quite some way off, but still got to us as we reached the track (chalk/mud/wet underfoot, wish I'd worn my riggers rather than the garden wellies, sliding all over the place)...bloody autocorrect keeps changing wellies to willies lol. We were literally running down the track, it was like needles on your face'. Then straight back to blue sky.
  7. Hi Have Pm'd the answer to your question rather than answer in the forum and go wildly OT, though I suppose gardening obviously has weather related connotations :-)
  8. Just took the dogs for a brisk walk on the downs behind me, temps dropped rapidly to 5.4 degrees, the clouds were ominous to one side and bright blue to the other, an intense hail and icy rain literally bore down before we could get back.
  9. A lovely, crisp day down here, now 7.6 degrees, one intense shower with bright blue sky, been gardening all day, so stood in the greenhouse and watched it pass. Loads of frog spawn appeared in the pond, so hoping no sharp frosts develop. Coffee break over and back to the garden before the light fades!
  10. Jax said "no date yet, it is just signals stage, I may (and often do) read them wrong" Those darn mixed signals huh! Would be so much easier if you could just come out and say 'oi, I like you' :-) Mild, but dreary down here, put a few varieties of sunflowers seeds on the window sill, which are already germinating, looking forward to seeing them blooming in the garden in afew months time.
  11. Bodium Castle is beautiful, took this 3 years ago on our visit. Went over the bridge to the train station, everyone in 40's dress, lovely place. I recall the Trust guide saying the portcullis here is one of the highest in operation.
  12. Wow, that's nuts! I wouldn't be jumping up and down on it though, got visions of them just disappearing into the liquid mud, or it just exploding outwards!I've been reading up on the different types of underground resevouir set-ups, due to living downhill of one less than a quarter of a mile above me on the downs, which I think May be a 'balancing/detention works' The ground isn't like that yet, so I guess there's nothing to worry about lol
  13. Sorry to hear you are still in troubles with the flooding Surrey :-( my best to you and yours continuing to fight the rise. We are lucky Down here is not any where near what others have had to contend with. The Water table is still rising and several main roads are experiencing ground/surface flooding as well as burst mains pipes. There is a walkway/subway under one of the main roads which has now flooded which is indicative to locals there is no where left for the water to go.
  14. Hi bjay, After I asked questions here about how such things occur and people offering links to discussions, I have been finding time try and educate myself a little on this subject, the geology is quite fascinating, albeit disturbing, like JP suggests, the building on unsuitable land. Been looking at environment agency geology maps and aquifer info for my area. Don't know if the local W.I. would be ready for such a slideshow though! EDIT: apols Iceni!
  15. Don't know how long they will have to wait for the water to recede and the damage to the signalling boxes. May have to take a train to Lewes and then connection with Brighton if he would normally use the main London to Brighton Line. The Local rag 'The Argus' is doing travel updates on it, so he can check in with whats happening there.
  16. A fair day down here, only had a brief shower of icy rain around 7pm. The Brighton mainline is still flooded and the water table has risen above the line and still rising. The underground river and surrounding chalk land that runs along the main Lewes Road drag, I think must now be at capacity as the water is starting to come up through some of the drains. Patcham has had a large pumping system installed to try an alleviate the situation. On the tour I did of the victorian sewers the engineers showed us a 'overflow containment area' this was like an extra storm drain emergency contingent. They described how when the last major flood event came in 2000, it filled so quickly they had no options but to let it out to sea without treating it or it would have just flooded back up drains, toilets etc. It does make me wonder how many times they have had to use this tactic during this long dreary winter.
  17. I can only speak from what I've seen/heard from friends today, I journeyed between Brighton and Lancing and then to Lewes today, Hove Seafront lost a lot of beach huts, Brighton seafront flooded in areas see pics below taken by an artist friend who was down at the arches today cleaning up. A couple trees down behind me, sheds moved in neighbours gardens from one side of the garden to the other. At Lewes centre, The Ouse is still within its banks. We faired a lot better than some on the Coast methinks all in all.
  18. Hi Marie, I'm down in the Lower Bevendean Valley backing onto the Downs, just to the side of Brighton Racecourse (if you look down from wilsons ave) :-)
  19. Marie, Down in the Valley had a couple of huge gusts about 10 minutes ago, pretty sure a tree/s came down in the wood at the back of my garden with a huge cracks heard, but other than that still seems not too bad this end either. Lol Tilly, mines open :-) Just put some more logs in the stove, buts it's not that cold either outside.
  20. Currently 10 degrees, pressure at 975.5 and quite calm here. Flooding on Brighton mainline at Patcham, Clayton Tunnel and several other areas is all that's being reported atm.
  21. I'm sure us Brightonians will keep you abreast of things downs here AS, good luck to your son for his film date! It's dull and already alittle breezy this morning, off to college I go.
  22. Lordy, that sounds horrendous, I'm supposed to be at college up the back of Stanmer Park tomorrow afternoon, don't fancy pruning tree/shrubs in that, there won't be any left to prune!
