  1. With the talk of earthquakes, seems Brighton felt a tremor today too. I was in Coldean (suburb of Brighton) at a meeting, didn't feel a thing. Down to 3degrees here, cold, dank and dismal. http://www.theargus.co.uk/news/10972606.Earthquake_rumbles_felt_in_Brighton/?ref=var_0
  2. That's not great. Is your gas meter inside or outside the house, how would they be able to tell from putting in outside pipe work that a leak was in your kitchen? I have a carbon monoxide thingy inside my kitchen to moniter do you? Makes me wonder if the work they did outside caused the damage? I may be talking rubbish, just seems abit strange. Hope you get it sorted. I suppose it's better to be safe than sorry. My neighbour is having an extension, she rocked up on the doorstep with her 'project manager' to ask if the water people could have access to the main sewage access in the garden to plug it whilst they moved the Drain currently living in her new extension (the architect hadn't factored this issue in the planning!) so far it has caused the elderly neighbour on the other side to lose both her gas supply for days and her phone supply (builders cut the phone line so they could build her roof extension) and when told by the phone supplier it would take some weeks to arrange a surveyor, they cut it accidentally on purpose. Don't let an vulnerable, elderly neighbour get in the way of your aspirations...shoddy really, and she asks me why I never invite her in for tea......
  3. Absolutely vile out there, and difficult driving conditions. w/s already registering 14.1 mms fallen today and still falling heavily. 'Orrid.
  4. I was off getting my Criminal Minds fix....wish I hadn't now, it was pretty twisted! Moving onto Helix, can't decide yet whether it's horror or hammy. I like a good B-movie, so I'll stick with it :-)Quite non-eventful down here today, chilly edge and some rare sun, still at 5.7 degrees. I still want a show of snow, but don't want it to mess with the planting season again, it's really going to finish a lot of the farming community off :-(
  5. Here's some old photographs I took on Brighton Beach a couple of years back, was a great day for snow photography! The candid shot was from about 30 yards away, they never knew I was there. I always regretted not approaching them and giving them a copy, I'm sure they would have loved it :-)
  6. It's pretty yuk out there tonight, enjoy our lovely Brighthelmstone, not the best evening for promenading :-)
  7. THATS IT! Someone needs to switch off JP's Christmas emoticon smilies in protest! ;-)
  8. hahaha! The last bit gave me a right giggle. I had visions of a Grange Hill stylie, round the back of the bike shed (it was the back of the gym at the girls school I went to!) you ran the gauntlet of "you wanna buy a fag, there 10p" or some bugger selling a poor bullied sods lunch....nah, I'm saving my money to buy the weather forecast from AS LOL !! Priceless !
  9. Natural predatory Corvidea are also responsible for the decline, it's not not just the grey squirrel. The great freeze in 1962? Decimated the bird populous and obviously the non-native species which over time re-populated didn't help matters. We choose to cull Badgers, Deer and the like with reasons of Disease and tree destruction, but where does it end? If we decide to 'cull/kill' any given species because we believe it was for a greater cause to stop one species becoming extinct/more important from another... By the grace god go I - I shouldn't have that wand, nature should. The decline is due to trees being chopped down, habitats being eroded by humans and loss of connection with our natural habits because generally communities are more focused in just 'being' rather than understanding we need these natural environments to be recognised as important in the longer term. Just My opinion.
  10. Hello Lottie, They forecast a max of 8 degrees daytime here today and as I left the house at about 11.30am my w/s was registering 12 degrees, the mimimum forecast was 3 degrees tonight and we have already dropped to 2.4. So I don't think it's unique to your locale!
  11. I just have to say after reading AS post in response to Snowlady. I couldn't read it all through blurred eyes. I watched my best friend battle a brain tumour when we were both 13. It had a profound effect on my life and in what I went on to become as a person. These challenges seem to bring out a strength, resilience and humility we didn't know we possessed, until tried with such a path. My sincere best to you and yours. We definitely need to do some sort of 'snow flash mob' snow dance to get those cold temps flowing. Most of you have been members for quite some time, so thanks for being so welcoming to a relative 1 year newbie.
  12. Hi ReefMy son (now 18) has Aspergers and dyspraxia as well as being partially sighted. He had a horrible time at primary/secondary and like your son struggled with the curricula and social situations. He worked incredibly hard to get the minimum to go to college, but in my opinion his school let him down and spent more time encouraging their more academic students. I had more than one row with teachers over the years complaining about his work not being upto par and his social difficulties . I would always respond, life skills are more important and fostering his vocational activities, which is Music production. Who gives a Toss if he can't do math or sport...These the same teachers who would put him in a cricket / rounders team and expect him to be able to see the ball...which made his team mates hate on him something rotten. He is now at college doing what he loves (music) all his other subjects have improved too and you are around peers who want to be there and have a common interest. It is the first time I have seen the young man he could be and finally a social circle of friends. I know it's like putting your heart on a plate every time you see them suffering, but it will get easier. Sorry the post is so long all, I just felt I needed to reply. Dull and dreary central in Brighton, currently 7.5mm of rain.
  13. Here in Brighthelmstone the temperature has rapidly dropped in the last hour, currently 1.8 degrees, off to chop some wood for the burner before it gets any colder.
  14. Gave me a giggle when Jason T said the polar vortex was collapsing over the UK, it brought visions of the old 'chicken Licken' story and the sky 'falling down' Returned to work today so needed a laugh (although I'm sure the significance of the PV is important to our wanting snow) swiftly onto 300 and some buff geezers ;-)
  15. After a lovely steak dinner for my son's 18th dinner (when asked what he wanted to drink, he paused, looked me and tentatively asked for a half a cider) the waitress said can I have some ID please...I thought woe is me, I forgot his bloody passport! And was willing to drive all the way home to get it....he said that's okay Mum, I'll have a coke instead...the entire family was at the dinner, and all went come on, give the lad his drink it's his birthday, the waitress said, if someone else orders it...well, I won't need the ID after all...phew :-) Now sitting next to a roaring fire with the weather station measuring a frosty -2.1c outside watching 'wanted' Come on snow, you know you can make an appearance sooner rather than later please!
  16. Here in Brighton it's been a lovely day, the sun made a welcome appearance, albeit Crisp AM frost at Stanmer College. We propagated some £5k worth of hard wood cuttings in saturated ground conditions, but Stanmer Park was thriving, snow drops in abundance and daffs already poking through. I even have a scabious (cornflower) flowering in the Garden. Have a good weekend all :-)
  17. Re: water in the boot - look at your seals around your rear lights on the inside of the boot - they may be decayed and that is where the water is seeping in. :-)as a kid, I spent a lot of time wandering around my dads car yard picking up bits of weird info!
  18. You should get up on the top floor of the car park, great view of the coast/pier from there :-) !
  19. http://www.bmyc.org.uk/links/webcams.asp stupid people on Brighton Beach, two people already dead in the last month here from being too close :-( and yet they still risk it... had a five minute downpour of sleety rain and now the sun is trying to make an appearance.
  20. Here Here! Had a bottle of champers in the cupboard for a year, so thought this would be the evening to open it! Happy new year all and bring on that snow :-)
  21. Hope you can save it, Sorbus aucuparia is a beautiful tree, I harvested some berries this year and propagated them :-) Had to wrestle with my greenhouse earlier, with the roof giving in to the elements. Now the ground is so sodden, I can see more trees giving in if there is no let up in the winds. Drove past the Ouse in Lewes a couple of days back, the water levels are worrying, Any more rain will surely break the banks.
  22. it is noticeably ramping up in Brighton, cosy by the wood stove and made a nice Christmas Wreath for the 'Palace Pier' mantle. Howling down the chimney and expecting the neighbours fence, which is swaying horribly to crush my greenhouse at any moment...
