  1. I have a general question around sinkholes. I live in a valley, mainly chalk based which has suffered mudslides in the past. There are a couple of 'naturally occurring dewponds behind me on the Downs not more than a couple of hundred yards from an unmanned man-made underground reservoir. I am assuming from what I'm reading about sink holes, that these Dew Ponds are in fact the product of sinkholes forming from years of acidic rainfall erosion? With the underground reservoir, I'm assuming there must be a cut-off point for capacity, what happens to the water that cannot be accommodated? We have run-offs when the defences can't cope and these were checked on Feb 11th and apparently were empty, which I find hard to believe to be honest given the rainfall. Apologies for the OT, just interested and alittle concerned being in a relative 'fishbowl valley' which has been deluged in the past.
  2. Looked outside my office at 1pm (In Craven Vale, on exposed Hill by Racecourse, Brighton) Could hardly stand up against the wind gusts, Icy rain. Made a judgement call and left to work the rest from home.
  3. @Floatyboat - I don't have timings, but I'm sure someone else can help you with that. The school surely has a bad weather policy/risk assessments procedure for such trips and that should kick in with severe weather warnings in place? I'd perhaps ring the school in the morning and ask, as bad weather is coming will they be re-assessing any non-essential travel? All the best. Here it is down to a chilly 3.8 degrees, dry and calm - OH has gone off to see the Albion vs Leeds match, won't be so calm there in abit methinks :-)
  4. I took it on board last night Surrey, I was dreading driving across town to a meeting just off Hove seafront this morning. The wind was incredibly strong, Now in between meetings and it's calmed right down again.
  5. Watched that too, what a great bunch, all just getting on with it and protecting their neighbours homes. Made me smile when he said "I don't sound local, and the Sikh gentlemen chimed in 'I don't look local' but they are both there along with all the other volunteers. Good job guys, hats off and hope your hard work keeps it at bay, if only a little.
  6. Quote from Perfect Storn - "As next week looks potentially serious, I will post notable rain events for this upcoming week". Sorry Paul, didn't want to take up thread space duplicating your post & didn't know how to separate the post, so just quoted you. It is a informative one, albeit depressive stuff. To quote the late great Ronnie Barker from his sketch 'Rindercella' - "Mist all chucking frighty!!!' There doesn't seem to be any let up in sight.. In Brighton the odd light rain shower, far luckier than those in serious need of help right now :-(
  7. Still all quiet on the Preston front here weather wise. On an Aunty note, I just witnessed one of my teenage Nephews doing that stupid drinking craze thing on FB and just couldn't stay quiet about it, given him a rollicking telling him to stop being a sheeple. It was a hard call, say nothing and turn a blind eye... Or remind him his Dad (my brother) already had enough on his plate (our Dad had his throat removed and is having radiotherapy right now for stage 4 cancer) Reminded him A & E have better things to be doing than pumping his stomach....he will probably hate me for a while :-(
  8. Strange old weather today. A couple of hail events during the afternoon, a couple of heavy downpours, then a little while ago three very vivid lightening strikes and then it was gone.... Been quiet ever since, just looked at my W/S and it registered 6.9 mm of rain so far today and a 6.9 mph wind!
  9. I went about 4 years ago, don't go after a Friday night!!! Too many Curries and the like, you need a strong stomach! I was lead to believe there are only a couple of such tours still available in Europe, Brighton and Germany? And that H & S southern water would put paid to the tour sooner or later..
  10. Hey Paul,It's sad, Our Victorian heritage being slowly erased by lack of maintenance /funds. They had such innovative and unbelievable foresight, having built the sewer system based on servicing infrastructure for around 500 years in the future. I have been on the Brighton Sewer tour. There are very little options to see such amazing architecture underground available to the general public these days. I hope your South Parade Pier makes it through.
  11. One of the best shots I've ever taken personally, bobbing about on the water. We were at the marina, I said erm, there's a boat trip going on, I want to be on it (OH hates boats - bad trip back from France in a force 5) So there it was, he shopped, I clicked, good delegation methinks :-)Wind worse than it was last time I posted....
  12. Wind picking up speed in Brighton and the rain just light at the moment, had a brilliant blue sky for about a hour. I said to the lecturer...could we stop with the classroom stuff and get outside and enjoy the practical while it lasts! I've never enjoyed pruning so much! With this next weather event, I think, we could lose what is left of Brighthelmstones most treasured landmark (as have many iconic coastal locations lost during this dreadful winter). So, thought I would share the photograph I took in 2009 from a boat - seaside on the hottest day of summer of the elegant lady, if only to cheer everyone up.
  13. LOL I've been married 20 years, but I'd still fancy myself a Female detective Cadfael...minus the monk moniker ;-) - It'ts been blustery and icy at times down here today. Afew trees down, lost a portion of the historic West Pier ( so glad I was able to take some unique shots of the elegant lady from the sea end via a boat a couple of years back for prosperity ) Everytime I hear 'the monk mentioned' I think of this... . :-)
  14. Oh Joy! LoL, A techie Lara Croft springs to mind! Something weird just happened to my ipad, No keys on pad, just as well I can touch type :-(
  15. W/S in garden already registering 20.5 mph, so I guess the gusts are higher than that, it certainly sounds worse than 20.5? Can anyone enlighten me on the differences between MPH and gust speeds? In the wood behind my home, the trees are making cracking noises and the rain has yet to arrive. I live in a valley to the side of the exposed Brighton Racecourse, so think we are getting some relative protection off the sea. The drive from work was all eyes peeled for slalom dodging recycle and rubbish bin obstacles. EDIT: rain arrived as I posted
  16. What a lovely sun treat, and a mild 11.5 c. Straight out in the garden to pot up my many cuttings from Last summer, get some more sweet pea seeds on the go and a good old tidy-up. Onto Getting the lamb in the oven :-)
  17. Poor Ireland is getting battered. I feel so sorry for all those dealing with this atrocious weather. Just awful.
  18. Quite blustery, a mild 7.8 c and raining steadily down here this evening, after spending afew hours at college fighting an overgrown and strangled copper beech (used to be a hedge) over 10ft high' and fixing the lecturers car during tea break, whose complete dashboard decided to go blank :-) Came home and decided with the gusts in store, needed to take drastic action to move my greenhouse away from the neighbouring fence which has been swaying horribly since December storms. Knackered, now sitting in front of the wood stove with a nice wine, listening to the wind through the chimney. Have a good and safe weekend all.
  19. The sadness of saying goodbye will be at the forefront, but sometimes our paths are foreseen and what is in our futures may give us the impetus to move forward and never look back, adventures anew, grab with both hands and embrace it :-)
  20. so better not but its upper scaremongering tripe Haha! Are you having 'T' problems again Mr P !
  21. Just reached a chilly 1 degree down here, although the rain has stopped for now. Am currently watching the live debate in Brighton council chambers via webcast. Big old Hoo ha with the vote of no confidence in the ruling greens, the motion has been carried. My ears are bleeding! EDIT: now 0.4 degrees c
  22. Read that earlier, was a useful informative and clear explanation. Thanks I needed that!
