Qutie often radars struggle with hail and ice grapuel and return stronger returns on the radar then what is actually present. It maybe that's what happened here. In summer thunderstorms you can normally pick out strong hail cores because there radar returns will be off the charts for a couple of pixels. Can't be sure without doing a proper look at everything though!

That's what I do as well; usually a sign of strong convection if you see a few strong pixels even if the PPN doesn't match. The PPN did explode very suddenly to the South and West of here so I think that's what must have happened.

I wonder Whitefox whether your getting a version of what happened to Kent last night, a little low forming which is pulling in milder air around its eastern flank at the boundary level. This time round looks like I'm JUST on the right side based on the rotation and where the system is at the moment.

That is probably what is happening, but the radar return is very different. Last night it seemed truer to what what you were seeing on the ground?

Long time lurker of this forum and weather geek/fan since 2009/10. =P

I can confirm in Wokingham it has been a mixture of heavy sleet and graupel with the odd flake here and there.

Quite pleased with how we did last night overall, got to work from home today and we had a nice covering of 10 cm, just a shame with all the intensity around us this afternoon the temperatures haven't been conducive to more heavy snow falling.

Thanks for that. Although it does mean that I shouldn't be so excited about those bright radar returns to my east!

It’s very interesting if you look at the precip you’d never guess what’s going on above.

But the satellite pic clearly shows the clouds moving anti clockwise over Hants.

I've noticed in the past that when you have a system developing overhead the radar doesn't match what you see on the ground. I often look for small red echoes that tell me there is a general increase. I think it may be the sudden lifting that is going into the circulation, so it shows as PPN, but actually it's rising. Makes sense to me anyway!

Maybe there just isn't that many people traveling up there today because of the overnight snow? Probavbly nit though. Maybe time to look at a webcam.

PS, you can really clearly see though on the traffic maps where the snow is falling, pretty amazing actually!!

Yes, I always use it as a proxy for where snow is falling to confirm. There would have been les people travelling today because of the snow this morning, but even with light traffic the roads go orange in heavy snow as drivers slow down.

Unfortunately, many of the traffic cameras on the M4 around J10 and 8/9 are out of action due to roadworks.

Your not suffering from funny business like I did last night are you?

Nick, yep HIRLAM has been awesome in all fairness, just like last year. Euro4 to be fair was good this morning as well...but HIRLAM by far the best.

It's your revenge! Does your birthday suit pledge still stand?

I'm comparing the radar image to google traffic maps and would expect to see Bracknell and Wokingham at a standstill if they were having heavy snow, but they appear to be flowing normally. Either it's all graupel in those areas, or the radar has something amiss...

Whilst there is meant to be heavy precipitation over Reading, barely a flake falling from the sky atm.

Something strange going on. Definitely snowing around Basingstoke, but although radar shows heavy PPN in vicinity of here we are back to moderate graupel. Must be something screwing with the radar further north? Unless winds are psuhing the PPN further south and West before it reaches the ground.... I don't know!

BBC somewhat underplaying this event in north Hampshire. Cars getting stuck on the Odiham to Alton road, my wife being one of them. She's only a couple of miles from home but she might have to spend the night in the car. However, it's not all bad news. My local is literally only 100 yards away so if she is stuck I can get my supper there.

PPN has literally exploded between Basingstoke and Reading in last half hour. Must be some sort of developing feature.

Could well turn to snow, especially as the whole mass starts to clear away. I'm just not convinced anything is going yo settle however, I still need almost 1c drop from where I am (1.5) to stand a good chance of settling snow and with the ground so wet it's going to need a real heavy burst, not sure it's going to be quite active enough for that.

Yes, temperature is on the way down but I think that unless there is some very heavy PPN, settling looks unlikely.

Quite a wet day in terms of liquid PPN; @kold weather, which site did you get the info from?

Wtf... That lot out west is really intensifiying again...

@kold weather I think give it half hour to an hour you are going to be will in the game.. Reading etc as well...

Some reports coming out of snow falling again.. If bbc are right re 1-3cm that's another inch in places..

    ICON failed on this one..

Think we need to get in the heavier bursts to get back to snow here in RG7. I thought the greens might do it, but think we need to get the lighter greens.

Temp steadily falling though as sun starts to go down. @kold weather is spot on: it will be treacherous once this all clears and freezes overnight.
