  1. It really is quite sad, but the other day I went to Shap (can you believe there's a New Balance factory outlet shop there?!) and actually went to look for the weather station. I either found it on the road to Wet Sleddale reservoir, or someone in Shap has some serious amateur weather equipment.

Been to the New Balance shop and to the Meto Station. Just need to tick off the Corus lime works and I 've seen all Shap has to offer.

Often wonder how much the nearby reservoir effects the site?

  2. Oooooo...got down to 2.2C in Shap. 7 miles (and countless social classes away) in Great Asby, it dropped to 3.1C, making it the coldest night since....oh....June 20th!

Models still going for another cold night early next week. 850mb temp about 3C cooler so should make that difference in getting an air frost at Shap Fell.

Just down to 6.2c on side of a hill here.

  3. Still looking like some cool nights ahead over the next few days.

Could be least a ground frost tonight N England Northwards in favourable locations.

After altnaharra's frost last night I would expect a few more sites to record an air frost as far south as N England into early next week.

  4. Lowest temps overnight around 6C, should be cooler tonight in lighter winds.

Next week still looks favourable for first air frost in coldest locations.

Nothing particularly unusually about that. Probably get a grass frost here but that's not rare given its nearly Autumn :good:

  5. Actual level snow is very hard to measure wind wind blown snow is involved. Above 500m any estimate of level snow is virtually impossible.

4 foot deep level snow at a habitable level is very rare indeed. 1940, 1941,1947 and 1963 recorded 4 ft plus totals.

4ft snow with a strong wind images of drifts to the top of houses would be expected as in 1947 etc. None such images occurred last winter to my knowledge.

  6. bloody hell iv'e never seen rain like this since the 1st of july last year.then we had flooded homes and a railway bridge washed out.

Looking at the radar you've had a pretty wet night.

Although there is heavy rain the wind is main feature here as usual. NE winds decending the ridge to the North.

    Temp 10.7C

  7. What struck me about the snowy spell we had between Dec 17th and January 17th was the fact that at most times the temperatures were marginal and it took ages to reach our maximum depth of 18 inches in my back garden . There was some sort of thaw nearly every day-like others here I am not complaining - just harping about winters past when snow fell on occasion at about -2c and accumulated much more readily.

Opposite problem here, heaviest shrs just to our North on several occasions. Just bad luck. Highest temp from Dec 17th to Jan 17th was 2.1C. Heaviest single day fall was around 15cm, nothing to write about in a normal winter never mind the coldest for many years. Lack really strong winds as aswell.

  8. Strangely enough I actually preferred 08/09 winter to that of last year. Recorded lower min and max in 08/09 but obviously cold and snow was more prolonged last winter. Snow/wind combination wasn't as bad early Feb 09. There were numerous snowfalls but none particularly heavy. I was always left with the feeling of what could have been. Maybe this year will produce a blizzard.

  9. Fairly decent location for interesting weather, Teesdale. Coldest/snowiest inhabited area in England and Wales is just a couple of miles further up the valley at Harwood/Langdon Beck/Forest in Teesdale area.

Here I'm located an the side of a small tributary valley running N/S about 120m above the valley floor. The valley head reaches 675m asl 2miles to the North.

Like others such as Pennine snow drifts and Terminal Moraine wind is the main feature of the weather. Luckly we are sheltered from SW winds by trees with the most violent winds coming from a NW direction. Lee wave related winds are common from the SW/W but also a more local Lee wave forms in a Northerly. Gales are common, with wind chill probably the single most notable feature of the site.

    Rainfall is around 1100/1200mm annually.

Temps, low max's like similiar locations are main feature although in 2009 did get down to -9.7C. Summer temps are more suppressed than areas further south. Anything above 20C is very warm with the highest annually usually coming in at 24C ish.

Snow is a feature of the weather in winter with drifting more common than not.

  10. Yes a very different day today with a current temperature of 15.7C and a strong breeze. Im making full use of it though by having all of the windows open in an effort to get rid of the heat the house has been holding.

Current indoor temperature is 20.3C - much better!

The climate of parts of Yorkshire has more a kin to the SE of England than the rest of Northern England at times.

At the request the of other half I've had the heating on a couple of times.
