20mph speed limits and no storms. This summer can now do one.

No storms here, either, despite the warnings and weather maps suggesting otherwise!  Plenty of rain overnight, though, which has now eased up at last.  Lots more rain and windy conditions set to plague us this week but luckily I have lots of work inside.  I’m not looking forward to 20mph on stretches of urban ‘A’ roads where I’m certain other drivers will want me to go faster.  I can see tailgating becoming a widespread problem in towns.  I don’t have a problem with 20mph near schools, or in shopping streets or residential streets, but on open roads in suburbs (especially when it’s a dual carriageway) I think it’ll lead to tempers being lost…..

I could see a distant storm here that I think was in Mid Wales yesterday evening.

Started being able to see lightning as it got darker but there seemed to be more cloud to ground to start with and then as it got later it was more intra-cloud but couldn't here any thunder.

Lovely pictures.  Didn’t see anything like that here yesterday - it was cloudy most of the day with intermittent persistent rain and drizzle only clearing slightly late in the afternoon.  Looks like a similar start today and we’ve already got light rain here.  Complete change from last week then, but I’m finding the lower temperatures at night much more comfortable!

  3. Cloudy and exceptionally humid this morning.  A few heavy drops of rain earlier but nothing more than that.   The sun has been trying to burn through the cloud for a couple of hours but unsuccessfully so far!   This is keeping the temperature in check at around 23c.  Yesterday we managed 27c according to my admittedly unscientific thermometer but felt hotter.  Didn’t think I’d ever say it but I’m grateful for a slightly cooler day to get some jobs done!  Great spell of weather for September, though.  🌤️🌤️😎

    What is more rare

7 days of >30c in September
    Getting a 40c in July
A 30c day in April or October

Good question, but as far as I can determine there has never been 30c recorded in the UK in April or October.  So  that would have to be the rarest event.  I am unable to discover whether any September has ever recorded 7 consecutive 30c+ days in the UK.    Unless my information is incorrect - do you have an answer to your own question?

Sorry if a bit off topic, but, on Thursday this week I am driving my 90 year old mum to Bleddfa, in Powys, as it is where she was evacuated during the war, and she wants to revisit. I am looking on Google etc for places to eat in that area but not finding many options. Does anyone on here know Bleddfa, any ideas most welcome. TIA

That’s a lovely thing to do and I know it’s a beautiful part of Wales but I don’t know about the local places to eat.  You could try the Hundred House Inn but there’s no recent reviews on Google!  Knighton has a variety of places to eat and it’s not too far back down the road.  Have a great day out!

Just feel sorry for school kids and families on holiday for whom summer has returned too late. Got cheated myself yesterday evening when after a lovely but a bit hazy day i took my dogs to the beach just as the breeze changed direction and thick sea fog drifted ashore. Luckily, it cleared again as the sun went down and, so far, today nothing but blue skies, barely a breeze and ☀️☀️☀️May it last for a little while!🤞

Ditto re school holidays!  How many times does that happen though?  Would’ve loved a trip to the beach today but I’d set myself the task of treating our neglected and dried out wooden deck which I pressure washed yesterday.  Had to get this job done while the weather is dry but I couldn’t work out in the sun for more than an hour at a time - too hot!   Trouble is I don’t think I’ve got enough stuff to finish the job and I’ll have to go and get some more tomorrow…..      Where’s your favourite beach of choice?   We like to go to Aberporth for the coast path and the fish and chips!

Yes, as recently as 2016 when 34.4C was set.

Thanks for that reply. 👍.   Meanwhile I also looked up this question online and discovered that the 2016 September record was the hottest September day since 1911 (so more than 100 years between records) but in both 1906 and 1991 September also produced the hottest day of the year - with the 2nd September 1906 reaching 35.6C and this is the hottest September day ever recorded in the UK!   Wonder how close we might get to this record in 2023…..?

‘Right weather, wrong time of year’ strikes again 😅

Can anyone tell me if the hottest day of the year has ever occurred in September in the UK before this year?  It seems bonkers that we couldn’t reach these heights in July or August but I’m told September is the new Summer month so perhaps it’s to be expected…….🤔

  9. Some quite interesting daytime temperatures are in the forecast for next week in an early September warm-up (I hesitate to use the term ‘heat-wave….😉) as this chart for next Thursday indicates….

They’re getting quite excited in the MOD thread about these synoptics but I don’t think it’s that unusual for us in September, is it?  We won’t reach the dizzy heights of 28c-30c of course, which may occur in the south-east, but that doesn’t bother me much.   I’m just happy to have a  break from the winds, cloudy days, and drizzle which have plagued us in August.

  10. That was a wild August night, for sure.  For a time it sounded like someone was playing a hose against the windows as the wind blew the rain horizontally in great gusts.  I feel sorry for those people holidaying in the area especially in all the caravans and camping sites on the coast - must have been a very unpleasant last night for them.  Having had a look outside it seems we didn’t lose any trees but there’s debris and leaves everywhere and it certainly looks like the aftermath of a storm.  Hopefully we will have a quieter weekend with some sun to dry things out 🌤️🌤️☀️

  11. It’s been another nasty evening and no sign of much improvement as the night draws in.  Heavy, persistent rain and strong gales prevent any possibility of an evening walk - or any outside activity at all.  Trees being blown around all over the place losing leaves which should be hanging around for at least another couple of months.  Two named storms before the end of August seems very unusual to me - perhaps it’s happened before but I can’t remember it if it has.  Only good thing is that it’s pretty warm and still feels like August from that point of view.  What will September and October bring I wonder…?

  12. After a very wet and blustery start this morning, it’s gone strangely calm and the rain has almost stopped - the sun was trying to break though the clouds a few minutes ago.  Looking at the charts it appears that the worst winds of Storm Antoni are going to sweep south of the Pembrokeshire peninsula and affect Cornwall and Devon but I am still expecting some strong gusts between 1:00pm and 2:00pm.    The centre of circulation of the low pressure is tracking through central Wales so the winds will not be so significant in these areas.

  13. We’ve had a fairly reasonable day here after early drizzle.  It dried up mid-morning and although we had plenty of cloud cover, temps managed 18C in occasional breaks.   OK - not really what you hope for or expect in early August but better than recent days…..  Tried to tie up some floppy plants with canes to avoid them being flattened on Saturday - I’ll have to wait to find out if I’ve done enough.

Getting rather boring being stuck in the same old ruts of wind/rain and interspersed by brief drier and brighter interludes. If nothing else, my potatoes might at least benefit!?😉🥔

No brightness here, I’m afraid…..rained all day yesterday with strong, gusty breeze to go with it.   This morning it’s still raining - pretty heavy at the moment - and no sign of a let up.  I confidently predict there will be no hosepipe bans in Pembrokeshire this year.

If I could I would I happily send you all the surplus wind at our end into your direction, not keen on it myself, living in an elderly house with parts of the roof in need of renewing. From my end of the country it seems somewhat ludicrous to read in the MO headline this evening of skies 'turning cloudy' when it has never been anything else all weekend. Anyway, look forward to seeing some blue sky and sunshine later tomorrow!☀️🤞

I’m with you on the subject of wind which can be very destructive in these hills and I’m also faced with two leaks which I cannot seem to fix - if the wind is strong enough and the rain heavy enough the water finds it’s way in somehow.  Don’t mind snow, blizzards even, and I don’t mind extreme heat for short periods, but stormy winds and heavy rain are my least favourite weather!
