Charlwood in Surrey has only had 50 hours of sun this is dullest I've come across in S England, throughly miserable to be in this position midway through to mid month the average should be 100 hours.
That is poor Dan.
Nothing of interest, no brief plumes so no storms, not even sunshine and an afternoon heavy shower, just mostly cloudy.
Second half has to improve.

Cloudy again with temps below average.
-
No luck again from the models, those seeking heat, look to August and good luck with that!
-
Not great again, in fact rather poor for high summer.

I take it that the AAM or GLAM or B&Q or even the legendary CFS have not been playing properly lately.
All just computer generated predictions.
Apart from the new GLAMB&Q lets rock model

Well people were getting giddy back in April and May saying this could be a 2018 and I did try and warn them...
''No idea what people are expecting. We're looking at a generally mixed early summer IMO with useable periods alternating with unsettled.''
Posted on May 14th.
But of course it was an unfavourable opinion and so got shouted down by a few. It was always 'obvious' to me that the summer would be 'iffy'. You can also probably count on one hand the amount of times a warm and dry spring has been followed by a great summer.
Yep, and a good call.

Gavin in the other realm is estimating 16.1C to the 25th however the first half could end up the coolest since 2004.

Cloudy again, certainly a run of dull days.
Something brighter on the horizon though.

The summer was mediocre but today it’s dawned on me this is poor. There’s one poster in here from London who acts like it’s been normal well it certainly hasn’t been. It’s dullest opening week to July in London since 2012. And this constant drizzle is revolting.
Spot on Dan!
Several 1000 word posts don't change the facts, its been poor and the models called it.
Lets hope things improve 2nd half of July, TBH I think it will get better, cant get much worse?

There's a lot to moan about at the moment hence the thread, quite a windy spell coming up,but things will settle down again soon and we can get back to moaning about how dry and hot and humid it is.
This year?
Seriously though, its all guess work more than 2 weeks out.

Unless there is a dramatic turn around in the second half of July, which off course there always can be I think its probably fair to say this month is probably heading towards the poor to mediocre category. If that's the case I'd love to see the how many good Augusts standout on their following distinctly poor to average June & July's...can't be many...….
Depends where you live I suppose, the SE often still gets away with it.

GFS again going for a country wide washout mid July!

3rd of July and heating has gone on.
Shameful.
How many times over the years would the heating be on first week of July?

An appalling day (again) here east of the pennines as well. I thought the clag would retreat west as the day wore on but its been persistant drizzle all day and the max has only been 12/13 which is diabolical for early July. A gusty wind too.
Yes, and the models have been accurate, disappointing but not a surprise.
-
Rain setting in here too, this really is a poor start to July.
-
Even felt a little chilly in the wind today!

You've just suggested that we are overdue an August comparable to the 5th and 1st hottest August's in over 300 years of records. By definition we are not overdue.
What we are more overdue is an August exceeding 17.4C so something like last July.
What are your thoughts for August SB, throwing La nina, low solar into the mix?
Ta.

Does anyone truly believe we will get a decent August? When was the last one you could say was properly warm and sunny? 2003? Does 2016 count? Not really for me, it just looks ok because the others have been so bad around it! Last 3 years have been pants too, adding to a disappointing list since 2003.
Down here in the SE they haven't been too bad, not great no, but obviously the further north you go and as August wears on they can 'feel' a tad Autumnal.
Before its said August is a summer month.

Not great is it.
And the GFS throws out another shocker for 'high summer'.

It's not that noticeable at the moment. From mid august, or once the darkness arrives before 9pm, is the early indication of summer starting to fade. This is the last good month of the year for lengthy daylight hours though.
The late august bank holiday is usually seen as a transition point from summer into early autumn. We can still have hot weather for another two months, so summer isn't over by a long shot.
You can also get cold and snow in March and April but they are not winter months.
By the same token Autumn starts on September 1st.
