    It’s quite bizarre .

Some people seem a bit disappointed that their location might not see the strongest winds .

Given these winds could bring down power lines , rip off roofs and cause major destruction am I missing something .

Perhaps it’s my storm phobia talking but really I hope Eunice just gets lost!

Quite.  I just don’t get it.  The damage to ones property is something I take seriously.

  2. I’ve seen a couple of pictures of Eunice being born over the Atlantic.  This is first time, the last time and the only time I will ever wish this,  but this is one baby I wish would be stillborn so to speak I am beginning to feel very scared and spooked about what she is going to unleash.  I know some find this sort of windy weather exhilarating but I don’t, I hate it with a passion and I am feeling really concerned and somewhat scared.

Any weather can be dangerous though ??‍♀️ And I’m very certain that amber/red warnings will be out for people to take heed.

My cat will definitely not be going outside Friday morning when I leave for work. And I shall be weighting down my bins and patio furniture.

Some interesting weather coming up after such benign weather.

    Stay safe everyone

Those wind speeds are awfully excessive though and very frightening, I am sure hoping they moderate.  None of my cats will be going out either and I am hoping I don’t have any foster cats come into care and into the pen, which is outside, until after these storms have passed through.

  4. Well, I certainly hope the wind speeds are moderated closer to the event.  Those types of wind speeds are very dangerous and the damage to property and businesses not to mention the potential to cause loss of life is not to be underestimated.  I wouldn’t want to wish that on anyone.

  5. Okay, question.  Still trying to learn so be kind.  Also aware its not the right thread but also not aware anyone has started one on this  topic.  Re.  warm Septembers and following winters.  My question is - although no correlation has been proved - what would very warm or hot sunny temperatures September/October (even November these days) do for the SST’s around our small island?  Surely (my logic!) would be it would keep the seas warm and equal the warming of any cold air crossing to our island = watering down of any cold air coming our way?

I’m a seasonie... Cold winters and hot summers. We get all the right synoptics in this country but often at the wrong time of year... Sort that out and there aren’t many other places I’d rather live.

Yes, I think I agree with that wholeheartedly.  I dislike hot sticky sunny weather personally but when summer comes around you sort of know it will happen at some point so you just have to get on and cope with it; although the last couple of summers in parts have been OTT heat wise for me.  Summer 2020 I could cope with as although we had some uncomfortable heat at times we also had some spectacular storms which, having a large garden to look after, was acceptable as it bought well needed rain to help keep the garden plants happy and ticking over.

I don’t know what you’re all experiencing in your locations, but the constant gloom here is getting to me more than the loss of any potential cold spell.

It’s not even broken cloud…just a thick constant layer all week keeping it fairly grim.

And the potential upcoming mild spell doesn’t look like improving it much. (Please note the careful use of the word ‘potential’. Don’t want to get dragged along with any misconceptions! Be it cold or mild ones!)

Can’t remember the last time I could see the Shropshire hills way out to the west from my location!

I’m not far from you in Penn and it is dreadful weather - dark, dank, damp and utterly miserable.  What I simply cannot fathom is why people prefer this mild muggy wet damp stuff in winter to bright but cold and crisp weather.   Even with the ground covered in snow it at least brightens everywhere up!!  You still still need to heat the house to guard against the dampness creeping in, it really is utterly vile.  I’ve even put the Christmas lights on early this afternoon to make it look better.

What also strikes me is some of the same people who moaned and groaned constantly over the summer months about the lack of sun and the constant cloud and rain seem to be the very ones who seem to prefer this dark dank wet damp nothingness in winter to bright but cold conditions - the mind boggles it really does.

In this country, proper cold days are relatively few and far between nowadays.

Perhaps if cold winters were still as common as they used to be, then people would be more accustomed to the cold so wouldn't whinge as much when it does get that way? I can't help but notice that those who complain about the cold are often (but not always) younger adults. Though there are of course exceptions, as I am a younger adult who doesn't mind the cold.

Not at all criticising as we are all different. Just an observation.

Yes, maybe.  I do think as some others have observed both December 2019/January 2010 and  December 2010 set the standard, possibly an unrealistic standard?   Winters do appear to be getting milder - horrid muggy mild crap.  I can remember some fabulous snow events over winters past - so much frivolity had by all - horses and cats playing in it - great fun.  As a child I can also recall the patterns jack frost left on my bedroom window - central heating came later.  I’m too old to contemplate emigrating anywhere now but I did have an American boyfriend in the 1990’s who asked me to go back to Wisconsin with him when he left the UK.  I didn’t go obviously but the Wisconsin winter snow sounded divine.

Where’s all this cold weather then? I can’t even see a frost on the models for this part of world in the next week. One month of winter done, hopefully the rest carries on like this. Models showing showing remarkably mild temps in the next few days, might even see 13-14C

Neither of our comments are model related really so we are both in the wrong thread, however, I have to say I find it really sad to think you would deny yours, or anyone’s children for that matter, the fun and games associated with frolicking in the snow and building snowmen.  I was 3 coming 4 years old 1962/3 and spent many a happy hour building snowmen in the back garden with my father - so much fun, which is how it should be.

OK, at the risk of being hammered by the mods I'd like to sum up this mornings achievements from my point of view. I'm no model guru. I understand very little, if truth be told, but I follow the model threads avidly. I do my best to grasp the nuances, I go off and google that which I'm struggling with.

This morning I awoke to 200+ new posts. I grabbed a strong coffee and began my journey of "enlightenment". It wasn't long before I became enlightened that the thread had been closed and off I went to find the new one. Imagine my despair when I discovered it was already at page 40. I downed my coffee in one go and grabbed a second, this time one that the spoon stood up in and slowly dissolved.

Quickly I realised that I had no hope of getting through them all so started scrolling and certain phrases jumped out at me. "Bin the GFS", major downgrade", "dartboard low in the Atlantic", "GFS blowing up the Atlantic". I came to the conclusion that quite apart from me being terminally confused and a tad perturbed, the latest run from the GFS is backing off from the major cold spell and snow promise for Christmas. And I saw something which stopped me in my tracks. Apparently there's a "wandering willy" across the country. You can now add a touch of fear to my current mood

So, the point of my post? Well, it's to plead with you knowledgeable peeps to give me a very brief summary of what we can sorta expect (with the usual caveats and cautions, of course). I'd also be eternally grateful if anyone can assure me that I"m in no danger from a "wandering willy" in my neck of the woods  This is just a lighthearted attempt to understand what's happening with the models and why the GFS seems to do this with stunning regularity. Thank you for your time.

Oh, I so agree but have been sooooo frightened to ask in case I get told off for asking!!  I understand bits and pieces of the charts and teleconnections but not enough to be coherent with it.  I too lurch from preparing myself,  my elderly mum and animals for cold weather to scrapping it all and ironing the bikinis!

  11. Have just checked and it is -31 in Yakutz   Would be wonderful to visit and have a sleigh ride but mind-numbingly cold.  Or Antarctica would be great and would love a chat with the penguins.   I bought some 4 x 4 wellies last year in readiness for snow and want to use them this winter
