Major local supermarket has no frozen food, all its freezers packed in yesterday. Folk are just walking around in a daze, the air stinks from fires, this has got to be the worst Summer spell for a decade easily. We are now desperate for rain, little on offer. A repeat of this would literally be living hell.

Problems all around here this last couple of days.  Apparently all the local Tesco freezers failed and Sainsbury’s had some sort of  issue as well.

Sounds just like the late local bully stray black cat who bullied all the other cats in my suburb, including my Chloe who always kept herself to herself and was too shy to defend herself. Needless to say, this made her an easy to target for the bully. 😕

He's awful to Rupert, have to watch them all the while.  He was a stray who adopted me 11 years ago.  Like your Chloe I’m sure if Rupert thumped Butty back once in a while he’d back off.  Tabitha (who I lost in February) kept him check.  Each time he had a go a Rupert she’d come from nowhere and sort Butty out.  So funny to see her do it.  She took no messing from him.

I hope he's okay and feeling better now this cool down has come to our shores, I'm a big lover of the heat but I do agree its very concerning for animals and how they cope with it

Thank you.  He seems to be more “himself” as the morning has gone on, i.e., bullying one of my other cats 🙄 Although it is nice and fresh outside I will say I have struggled to get the house temperature down.  It is still 26c in the utility.  Maybe that’s cavity insulation 🤔

Lucky you. No thunder here. Theres still time yet but thunder symbols as usual disappeared from bbc weather app grrrr...

An exceptionally hot day here for this far north. Not the 40C reached in the south but my phone said 37C at one point.. Put a thermometer outside and it said 35C (about 95F). So I think 35C was the maximum here. Which is still really, really hot.

Sat in the sun for about 10 mins in just a pair of shorts before heading back inside. Felt like an oven even in the shade. Don’t know how people manage to sunbathe for hours when it’s this hot - I much prefer 15-22°C for sunbathing. Nor do I get why people enjoy these ridiculously high temperatures when 20-22°C and sunshine is pleasant enough for most people to enjoy.

Us heat haters have had to endure this exceptional heat for the benefit of heat lovers. We will remember this day for a very long time - unless, god forbid, we get even hotter weather in future summers.

I don’t care if it pours down for the rest of the summer - two days of extreme heat is quite enough. We really need the rain anyway. I am hoping for a cool and wet August. Let’s hope next summer is much more mediocre - I miss the more average summers of 2008-2011.

Lovely sunset here btw. My cats were sensibly keeping cool in the shade - unlike a lot of people today...

I am so looking forward to tomorrow - 21°C cloud and drizzle. Yay!  Finally some normality! 😄House is so warm tonight, probably not gonna get much sleep. 26°C in the living room, and probably even warmer in my bedroom. 😰

I think the heat knocked one of my cats about yesterday.  He has liver issues and possible sub clinical thyroid problems.  I made sure they were kept as cool as possible but I couldn’t get anywhere in the house below 29.5c last night however I tried.  So much for the cold front.  Absolutely desperate for rain. Everywhere is parched and ripe for ignition - so worrying.

Truly scary scenes coming out of London

How very frightening.  This is what worries me with these hot dry spells, they are far from funny.  All very concerning and devastating for those involved.  so hope they can bring under control asap.

Keep an eye on that tortoise.  My nephew's disappeared during a hot spell a few years ago.  We spent ten days searching for him all over the garden, under every shrub, behind every plant pot, at the back of every border.  He turned up ten days later in almost the same place where he had last been seen.  Really good at camouflage, tortoises.

Yes, I confess I’ve forgotten him on occasion 🫢🫣 and just as I’m off to bed I’ve remembered and had to go out with a torch to find him and he was well hidden in bushes but I do know his favourite spots    He is restricted to the lower part of the garden so I can usually find him if I keep looking.  I bring him in every night as we do have badgers.  He’s a nightmare in this weather charging around chasing everything.  Trips me up all the while.  He caused me to have a nasty accident last year.  I fell over him and banged my eye on the outdoor tap, very lucky I didn’t damage my eyesight.

The cooler air is heading in here now, feels like a westerly fan as that hot S wind changed quickly to the west..

    A 3c drop in temps..

How long have I to wait for it?  I’m getting impatient for something cooler.  Not a cloud in the sky 😢 Had to rescue a fuchsia with water as it was drooping.    The end came off the hose and soaked me, not amused!!

Heat building again for the weekend and possibly early next week.  Probably not as bad but bad enough for my taste.

Noticing now the wind is picking up and blowing my sun umbrellas all over the place🤬  Will have to get big brolly in I think.  Have bought foster cats into utility to keep them cooler.

Summer can do one for me.  It causes so many issues for me when this hot.   Roll on winter.  It can’t come soon enough.

Only the tortoise and my sunflowers are happy.

  9. Bungalow now at 27.3c.  Managed to get cat pen down to 25c and Butty’s boudoir down to 27.1c (important as he has a medical condition) using damps towels on clothes horse and fans blowing over frozen water bottles.  So late going to bed trying to cool things down.  I will get up and check them all at some point during the night though.  Mad that I’ll have to repeat the whole process again tomorrow.

Nearly time folks ,  the dreaded heat is almost on us  😩

I suppose the sooner it comes the sooner its over ,  I just wish time would pass very quick , I feel two days of my life are wasted on damn hot weather 😠 , as there will be nothing to do but shelter indoors and try and keep cool ,  plus side is I am of work this week ,  I really do feel for anyone who has to work in 37 to 41c temps , I hope we never see anything like this again this year .....or ever

So agree with this sentiment.  So much to do in the garden such as cutting bushes back but you can’t do anything other than sit about.   Too hot for you to be working in it and of course cutting plants back in such dry hot weather would probably kill them as they are stressed enough.  Such as complete waste of time this hot weather is.

  11. Just caught up with the model thread, grim reading for heat haters. Not only are we being barbecued alive tomorrow and Tuesday, it looks like the heat could well bring a friend with it - brisk hot winds.  So we will be barbecued alive with the addition of bellows being applied, great - looking forward to this sooooooo much 😖

Does anyone with more knowledge than I have any idea why all this is happening?  I did read sometime ago and can’t recall where, some scientists consider expanding Hadley cells to be a possible culprit.

    Morning o’ fellow heat haters.

Here we go… The start of the Spanish Plume of hell! 🥵🌡🌡🌡

At the moment the skies are very hazy here, so I think that’s keeping the temperature down a tad. Long May it stay like this! 🙏🏻

I find the concept of enjoying this weather impossible to understand! It’s so draining and uncomfortable! What’s more people actually deliberately sit out in it!!! 🤯🥵

I can just about deal with temperatures in the low 20s Celsius absolute max 25° Celsius! Everything else is just unbearable and unnecessary!🥵🌡🌡

I just pray to the weather gods that this ends with a proper big thunderstorm, otherwise this is a lot of completely unnecessary suffering! 🥵🙏🏻🌩⛈

Temps for today revised down further, a lot of cloud about...

We have had a fair amount of cloud this morning thankfully, which has helped.  Unfortunately, heading into the hottest part of the day, the cloud is showing signs of dissipating somewhat so I expect that infernal orange ball in the sky will be poking its nose through again.

  13. We should have had more in the way of cloud today according to the forecast but nope the sun is out poking its nose into things again 😩  So fed up with it this morning and wish it would do one for a while.  To add to it all my joints have been creaking with the dry weather now for a week or two and last night walking across the lawn my left knee cracked badly and just gave way.  I now can’t really weight bear on it at all due to pain and swelling and am hobbling around with it stuck at a funny angle - not what I wanted at all with all the heat on the way.

I don't have any cavity insulation. The bricks are very porous and my neighbour fitted cavity wall insulation and ended up will terrible damp issues. The houses were built at the same time.

I give it a go and see if it helps. It can't make it worse AFAICT

Wall cavity does help keeping the heat out I have to say.

Agreed.  However, I could easily live in Scotland and did consider moving to the Highlands but came to the conclusion it would be too far from family!  I chose Shropshire and am only 7 miles from the Welsh border, so stunning all round!

Shropshire is lovely.  Spent a few years riding horses around Wenlock Edge.  Mum and I contemplated selling up both our properties and moving to Shropshire but it never happened as the daily commute to West Brom for work was a bit steep and I had 3/4 years to go until I could retire.  Looked at barn conversions as far as Ludlow but the favourites were Church Stretton and a hamlet called Plaish.  I was put off the one at Plaish in the end as the neighbour was a bigwig in the local fox hunt - no go area with me I’m afraid.

N Wales is stunning 🤩 The only downside is the roads are not the best so it takes a while to get anywhere. S Wales is a lot better in that respect. Scotland is absolutely gorgeous, too. Usually cooler in summer than Wales which means I couldn’t live there (I could live in Wales), but the scenery, some beautiful towns and cities, islands, coasts, and of course the people make it very special.

The ex’s family cottage was off a beaten track around Llanfachreth.  Absolutely pitch black at night though!  Such a beautiful peaceful place.

A move to Scotland would be beneficial, they really do have a different climate up there with heat much less likely and snow much more likely than in England. You could also try Wales (more the N and W) and the far NW of England. The NE coast is also often pretty cool in summer.

I guess if moving far away isn’t an option then maybe a move to a bungalow would work. Lived in one in the UK and it was so much cooler in summer than a regular type house.

Yes, I already live in a bungalow and I agree with you they are much better.  An ex boyfriend had a lovely holiday cottage in NW Wales so spent quite a few holidays there and it is lovely. Never been to Scotland but mum has spent many a holiday in Scotland and always says just how beautiful it is.

This has to be a joke. A low of 23C..that will smash records never mind the fact that a max of 34C is forecast, then 36C. I'm pretty sure the Google temps are based on the GFS, they are crazy.

Temperatures are just upgrading by the day, would've liked to see a moderation but it just keeps getting more extreme. HorribleScreenshot_20220714-092855_Chrome.thumb.jpg.d3b4c62de679e74763acc63d1d223676.jpg

I’m absolutely dreading Sunday-Tuesday next week I really am and if these extreme heat events are going to be a recurring theme each summer, I will seriously consider moving to a cooler part of the UK.  I guess I would be looking at Scotland?    We now have 39C forecast for Monday afternoon.  I am now working on plans to keep me and the felines as cool as possible.  My main concern is my cat rescue pen which is in the garden.  I’ve umbrella’s galore over them and have a sail blind I had for the conservatory I’ll try and fix over the roof somehow.  I’ve some bottled water to freeze and put in front of a fan and will try some wet towels hanging in the doorway - contingency plan if all else fails is to just move them somewhere but not sure where!
I also have a 90 year old mum to worry about but she's thankfully sensible and knows to keep taking fluids on board.  She was hospitalised with dehydration and sepsis last August and since then has understood the need for hydration.

All in all a very uncomfortable period of weather so stay safe one and all.

Definitely getting to the point where it's just too hot for me, and not even at 30C yet.

I honestly don't know what I'd prefer - a plume event that breaks down in a couple of day or less extreme heat but a much longer lasting bout of it.

At this point we seem to be getting both!

Yup, too hot for me also I have to say and my temper is starting to get a bit ragged.  Dreading the weekend and early next week.  Trying to sew some quilting blocks together which may not be the best day to do it with this heat I have to say.   One cat has played me up about coming in and I was so busy concentrating on her I inadvertently grabbed the wrong end of the iron and have burnt my fingers …ouch!

I wasn't aware of that. I guess you have to avoid places that have A/C running too?

In terms of cost, the portable A/C unit I have runs at about 780 watts when at full pelt, so going by the UK average electricity cost of 28p/kWh then it costs about 21.8p/hr to run.

That'd be £1.74 for 8 hours overnight, but they usually have timers so could switch off after 4 or 5 hours and reduce that down to about £1.

I know some people who have gas central heating but also use an electric heater occasionally. They're usually around 2,000 watts so could easily cost over £2 for an evening's usage. (And of course it's easier to warm up than it is to cool down, so you could argue running an additional electric heater is less worthwhile unless you're really in need of it.)

It depends how you want to spend I suppose.

Yes, have to avoid A/C if possible.  My neighbours keep their bungalow really cool in heatwaves.  They still have the original warm air duct heating from when they purchased the bungalow way back in the 1970’s.  Not sure what he actually does to the system but he gets it blowing cold air rather than warm air.  As they are elderly I popped around one day in the heat we experienced in summer 2020 to see if they were okay as all the windows and doors were shut.   They were both as cool as cucumbers with cool air blowing around
