Ok time for a rare moan from me - don't usually, but the constant wet dull weather since 18 December, and predominantly mild weather to boot, bar a brief interlude such as 2 January is now getting to me..
I always come to the lake district in Jan.
I go home Friday and it's been pants it really has. If I had webbed feet I'd be over the moon.

Hey all!
Not sure if anyone has posted this, but the 'Cold Weather Alert' by the Met has now been upgraded to a 99% chance of cold / severely cold weather, which is just 1% off a national emergency declaration. If we read what each region can expect, there's been some quite significant upgrades:
What is also interesting to note is the Southeast/London discussion, "There is currently a 30% risk of up to 5cm of snow on Sunday 11th December around London and the Southeast, please keep a watch for any National Severe Weather Warnings that may be issued by the Met Office if confidence on this event increases."
Didn't realise that the West Midlands had a coast

Just a very light dusting of snow.

Thermostat set for 16.5c morning and afternoon then jumps to 18c for the evening.
As its wireless have moved it into a slightly warmer part of the hallway. Plus have turned down the flow rate on the boiler from it's preset of 80 down to 60.

Im not normally one for taking any notice of anything beyond 120 but this time it looks like the start to winter could be something special.l promised my wife I'd put up the out side decs next weekend on my return from York but after looking at the general consensus coming from all the models I think I'll do it this weekend instead.
Enjoy the ride peeps it could be a good un.

I think the prospect that amber could become red didn't come across properly yesterday. I liked the idea of the "red watch", a bit like in the USA with hurricane watches. It would get us prepared without it being all or nothing.
when i used to work at sea doing oceanography the shipping forcast was always taken note of, it came with the job as none of us took the power of mother nature for granted.
However most folks these days dont even bother to look at the sky anymore, too wrapped up with that thing in their hand (no pun intended)

I live in Marazion near the far west of Cornwall and am very concerned to say the least. We have a conservatory at the back of our property which has buckled with 80 mph winds. Gonna be a real test this one. We lost our roof tiles in 2014 storm and that was not as bad as this beast. Stay safe all
know that area well, good coastal walks. if the wind isnt going to be enough to deal with the storm coinsides with a high tide not a spring tide but you will still get a tidal surge so plaese be safe

Talk growing of a red warning for Friday, both on the BBC weather bulletin after the 10pm news and also from pro mets on twitter. Be interesting to see how expansive a red warning will be and how much people will ignore the warning!
i have found the lack of interest in the upcoming storm from uk news agencies very odd, they have not got a clue whats about to happen more interested in Royal family issues

Thing is, this is what some people don't understand. The uppers were nothing special in 2010 but it happened at the time of year with the lowest solar input and the flow was often slacker. These two things combined to give us those desperately low temperatures. I'm really not a fan of February cold spells and by the middle of the month I'd rather have some mild days and sunshine (when it can feel quite pleasant).
i'm doing double night shifts for all of Feb covering for someone who is shielding plus my own. i know what you mean with out the white stuff it can drag a bit at least im in bed for most of the day so don't have to look at cold grey drab

just been going over the expected temps for my area upto next Friday tomorrow onwards not one in plus range but what really caught my eye was the expected wind chill.
lowest is a very impressive -13 although i think we could go even lower than that.
going to borrow my sons mega telescope and do some star gazing if possible.

The down side to that is that the bleedin media with make it out to be like a scene from "the day after tomorrow" up this way we just get on with it.

Just been out and snow settling onto roofs, cars and grass but roads still too warm. Off to Leek in a bit will need big coat as the wind chill is cutting

Lovely out there today, very overcast earlier but the sun is now out. Snow as far as the eye can see, take this over the mild wet muck any day.
