  1. It is pure luck as you say. I've an ISS board that is still going strong after 8½ years, but another that died in under a year. Same with the anemometers - one had a failed reed switch in under 18 months, another has been going strong for over 7 years now. I think the current ISS board that is 8½ years old and the 7½ year old anemometer are probably on borrowed time now though. The ISS board even survived water ingress, living on after being blow-dried to get rid of the moisture. The FARS fans are garbage however, never had one last longer than 200 days, whereas my 12v custom fan I added has run 24/7 for 3½ years now.
  2. Big losses in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas coming over the next week or so. This is the area that looks on shaky ground now. All of the easy losses have melted out on this side of the cap, with quite a well defined ice-edge now.
  3. Today is just what the doctor ordered. 21.1C with 44% humidity and a keen breeze so you can have all the windows open and blow that awful stagnant heat of the last two weeks out of the house. Instead of 28C+ inside its now down to 24C already. Lovely!
  4. Definitely the best storm I've seen since August 2012, it was almost like night. It passed just to the east of Hedon but fortunately I'm not at home and actually right under it.
  5. It's like night here at the moment, very dark with lots of thunder and lightning to the west. The radar is a mess of anaprop at the moment though, so no idea if we'll get a hit.
  6. This is by far the worst day so far. Its 25.2C at the moment but with a 21.0C dewpoint. Its disgusting.
  7. Another exceptionally warm night with the record minimum temperature being broken for the third time this month. This time the low was 19.1C. It was mostly cloudy for the first half of the night before thunderstorms arrived early in the morning. These mostly missed us but we still managed 4.0mm of rain. Currently overcast with bright spells, a temp of 21.5C and extremely humid with a dewpoint of 19.7C
  8. A dry and hot day with long spells of sunshine, but rather hazy at times. It turned cloudy by early evening as heavy showers passed to the west with thunder heard in the distance. The max of 29.9C before the sea breeze kicked in late in the afternoon was the joint third warmest in July here since 1980. Max Temp: 29.9C Min Temp: 14.6C Mean Wind: 11mph SE Max Gust: 18mph Sunshine: 7.5hrs Rainfall: None Currently partly cloudy with a temp of 21.1C and 79% humidity.
  9. I think it gets that reputation more due to being rather wet in the heart of it. All three months were slightly sunnier and warmer than average here. June was the driest since 1976 and August close to average rainfall but July had more than 200% of normal rainfall. It was also just consistently average/warm than having any exceptional heat. We only reached 25C three times during the entire summer. Perceptions of summer often change depending on how often it rains though. Summer 1995 and 2009 were only 0.1C apart temperature-wise here but there's no question which was the better!
  10. I don't know which I'd prefer, Heathrow's 33.1C at 15:00 but with a 12.3C dewpoint, or the 29.2C we have here now with a 19.1C dewpoint. Probably the former, its awful today!
  11. The record high minimum since 1980 here is 18.9C (set this week!), so anything near that 20C shown would smash the current value.
  12. Up to 29.1C here despite an onshore breeze. That's very warm considering. It would be quite something if we reach 30C twice in a week, after 17 years of not managing to. We're up to 749hours so far since 1st May. Quite exceptional.
  13. Very warm and sunny though hazy at times due to high level cloud. Much less humid than recent days but it has become increasingly muggy as the evening has gone on. Max Temp: 24.9C Min Temp: 14.6C Mean Wind: 7mph S Max Gust: 13mph Sunshine: 13.7hrs Rainfall: None Currently partly cloudy with a temp of 17.6C and 85% humidity.
  14. Much cooler today. We hit 24.9C briefly earlier but its 21.9C right now with a breeze. It feels so pleasant. That heat on Friday can go back to where it came from as far as I'm concerned!
  15. It even hit 30.3C here, making it the warmest July day on record and first day of any month to hit 30C since August 2001. Very unusual indeed.
  16. After another record warm minimum temperature this morning for the second day running, it was another hot day with broken cloud and long spells of sunshine. Max Temp: 28.9C Min Temp: 18.9C (new record) Mean Wind: 9mph W Max Gust: 17mph Sunshine: 9.6hrs Rainfall: None Currently mostly cloudy with a temp of 21.4C and 73% humidity.
  17. This month is certainly turning into something exceptional here. Our current mean is 18.9C, just 0.4C short of what July 2006 finished on. If the temperatures shown on the GFS 06z were to come to fruition, we would actually finish above it on 19.4C. Considering we've only ever had two other summer months above 18.0C in 38 years (August 1990 and 1997), I didn't expect another month to get so close this soon!
  18. Another warmest minimum on record of 18.9C, beating the previous value of 18.6C set... ...yesterday. Already up to 22.2C.
  19. I've been coping alright until today. A 18.6C min last night followed by probably some of the worst conditions I've ever experienced in the UK - a temp of 30.3C with a dewpoint of 20.3C. It would be OK if there was the odd cooler day, but its been relentless for a couple of weeks now.
  20. Mostly cloudy with sunny spells throughout the day. The min temp of 18.6C was the warmest minimum temperature on record at this site in any month since 1980. The max temp of 30.3C was the warmest on record in July and warmest of any month since 15th August 2001. It was extremely humid aswell, with a dewpoint of 20.3C at the same time. Max Temp: 30.3C Min Temp: 18.6C Mean Wind: 11mph S Max Gust: 20mph Sunshine: 6.8hrs Rainfall: None Currently partly cloudy with a temp of 23.7C and 70% humidity.
  21. It depends on the conditions for me. It can be 18C outside with a keen breeze overnight which allows the heat to be blown out of the house and not be too bad. As long as its less than 24C indoors I can cope generally. Last night however was awful. It was still 22C at midnight and only dropped to 18.6C. There was no breeze at all so the house just remained uncomfortably hot, not dropping below 27C even by morning. I'm dreading tonight, it's currently 29.1C inside!
  22. Here, the period 1991-2017 average for summer is 0.2C warmer than the 1981-2010 average. There's still three years to go of course for the full 1991-2020 mean, but the equivalent differences in winter, spring and autumn are 0.3C, 0.3C and 0.2C. Actually very little in it. You have to remember that a lot of the 80s summers were much worse temperature-wise than now. 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1988 were all cooler than 2012 for example. These will fall off and be replaced by the much warmer summers of the 2010s.
  23. Just hit 30.2C here, the first day to hit 30C for 17 years.
  24. We had a min temp of 18.6C last night, which is the warmest on record not just for July, but any day back to 1980, beating the previous record of 18.4C on 10th August 1991. Already at 10:30 we'd hit 26.1C today. I'm finding it interesting as a weather enthusiast, but its about time it cooled down now! Our house didn't drop below 27.0C all night, absolutely unbearable.
