  1. Thank you! It's great to find a group who get it. Who don't witter on at you for "not enjoying the beautiful weather". Tomorrow is Friday so its a case of grin and bear it then disappear into as dark and cool a room as i can find til sanity returns! Wish you and all the others around her well and i may occupy myself tonight reading through the comments on this thread - first thing to cheer me up this week >If it can do this is September, after a relatively average summer, what would a 'bad' year look like...?! Sadly i think we'll find out soon enough. Aircon next year i think. Dont see any alternative in spite of the environmental impact. That can be offset by the millions who think we're crazy!
  2. Have to say, as August drew to a close and we had a day (maybe two?) under 20 degrees i was starting to breath a sigh of relief - we know it can be hot in Sept but usually just a couple of days. First week back at work after a week off, WFH where it is consistently 27/28 degrees by lunchtime with nothing working to slow down the temp rise its just draining. Expecting to use your brain when you can barely function, get terrible sleep at night and of course, everyone starts making a racket outside so you can't have any peace and quiet just to be miserable in peace til it passes. Then you're worrying about the pets and how they're coping. Hate it. I've been to "hot" countries which are geared up for these conditions, we've lived through heatwaves times and again.. but god its miserable! Never realised this thread existed but am glad to see am not alone in hating the heat, am pleased its almost over. And this is in all probability the coolest summer and early autumn for the rest of our lives.. World is burning and we do nothing!
  3. 100% with you. Do wish the weather forecasters on tv wouldn't editorialise and assume we're all "loving it". We're not all comfortable in these conditions. Bring on some cold weather!
  4. Very intense thunder here in Newton Aycliffe. Not seen any lightning but frequent rumbles, very loud. Seems to plenty more to come as the day goes on but think the first storm i've heard today has just about passed over heading towards Peterlee and Sunderland.
  5. Totally. Used to live in Saltburn and by the time it would hit it was usually not worth mentioning. Very grey here now and wind is whipping up. Hoping there is enough energy left to give us something decent today. Usually get a pressure headache ahead of a storm and it's kicking in too. So it bodes well. But I said that last night and wasn't impressed
  6. Just monitoring on blitzortung and NW Extra, looks like may be a direct hit for you if it doesn't die off like last night!
  7. Well, that was a bust! Few really decent flashes and rumbles as it approached then zilch.
  8. Certainly does! Been a long time since we've seen any storm let alone a nighttime one with some real energy. Am an amateur radio operator and had my kit turned off all day just to be on the safe side. Was feeling like a waste of time but looks very promising! NW extra plot looks like best we could have hoped for!
  9. First lightning and rumbles of thunder here in Aycliffe. Is still a distance away but looking good.
  10. Will be monitoring what happens as it reaches your neck of the woods to see what we might expect if/when it arrives up here! Fingers crossed. Today has been a hot, humid mess around here. Plus it may be getting dark if/when it reaches us so that could be pretty fun.
  11. I see Torro have put out a warning for the northern half of England for tonight. Is consistent with previous forecasts even if its been a slow day in this neck of the woods. Can see where it will come from but the storms over Wales/NW/Midlands seem to be very slow moving. The Tornado and Storm Research Organisation (TORRO) WWW.TORRO.ORG.UK TORRO is a privately-supported research body specialising in severe convective weather in Britain and Ireland
  12. Hi all, Been a while since i've used the extra radar and i seem to recall being able to change the map style to a dark one, which i prefer. Can't seem to find the option to do it in the V8 version. Is it only available in V7 or am i looking in the wrong places? Thanks
  13. Hi all, Have heard bits and pieces about some temperature extremes in various parts of the world and am trying to source a list showing global extremes in real/near to real time as it is really difficult to keep track with news items and forum posts. So am wondering if anyone here knows of something that exists? For instance, a list showing global high/lows for temperature, precipitation, pressure, wind strength, etc and shows those values against records for the respective area. As an example, Vietnam had its highest every temperature, as I'm confident everyone here knows. But for me, unless i see a headline telling me its the highest ever, i won't know without delving into it whether that is a usual temperature or not for that area. It becomes more difficult to monitor as we extend to all countries and regions of the world. With the Asian heatwave and strange weather elsewhere, I'd find a rolling list of this kind of information very informative. Does such a thing exist? Thanks!
  14. First record goes...? Wales records hottest day on record Wales has provisionally recorded its hottest day on record, with the temperature reaching 35.3C in Gogerddan, near Aberystwyth, the Met Office said. More to follow.
  15. To be fair, you're only going to encounter those happy with the conditions - everyone else is staying out of the sun. Not to detract from your enjoyment!
  16. Thanks. Thats the bit i'm good at - staying hydrated. Have found a little spray bottle for water which is ideal for cooling.. for me and the pets
  17. On the subject of body temp/not being able to cool - i assume humidity affects it - can anyone advise what "good" looks like for humidity once temp exceeds 37 ish degrees? Do you want low or high humidity? Current got 48% outdoors and 39% indoors.
  18. Sadly it seems a sense of misguided pride - "we used to eat a lump of coal for breakfast, never did us any harm", "standpipes? halcyon days"... My priority today is our pets - keeping a close eye on them 24/7 at present. Dogs = Chihuahua is under a duvet. More fool her but she's ok at present. Staffie is lying under desk with a fan on her tummy. Rats - Bottle of ice in their cage near their little nest to keep them as cool as possible. Is it worth putting out water for birds and other animals?
  19. Seen a few comments from the 76'ers on this. "people just got on with it". Sure. We all know the stats but it hasn't escaped my attention that these are likely to be the people who suffer most from it this time around. Maybe it will open a few peoples eyes to what is going on with our climate. Certainly hope so.
  20. Met Office on the Guardian - Outside chance of 43 tomorrow! Outside chance of 43C for Tuesday, Met Office chief exec says The chief executive of the Met Office confirmed “we may well see the hottest day in the UK in history” on Monday, but Tuesday is expected to be even hotter, with some forecasts estimating highs of 43C (109F). Prof Penelope Endersby told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: We think today we may well see the hottest day in the UK in history, with the hottest temperatures in the south-east, but actually the highest temperatures we expect tomorrow, and those temperatures will be further north as that warm air pushes north. So it’s tomorrow that we’re really seeing the higher chance of 40 degrees and temperatures above that. Even possibly above that … 41 isn’t off the cards. We’ve even got some 43s in the model but we’re hoping it won’t be as high as that. Well, we certainly don’t see these very hot temperatures persisting past Tuesday, so we’re expecting a big drop in temperature, mercifully, overnight into Wednesday – down 10 or 12 degrees on what it has been the days before. We are still seeing hotter than average in our three-month outlook and also very dry, and our attention is turning, once we’re past these two days, to drought and when we might see any rain, and we’re not seeing any significant rain coming up.
  21. Outside at present, air feels like a blanket rather than something passive. Interesting clouds too. Almost look like isobars.
  22. Been tracking temp in and outdoors today as i mentioned earlier and thought a baseline ahead of the main event this week was worth capturing. Not all evenly spaced out (i.e. readings aren't all every ten mins - mainly as i've just had a nap so missed a couple of hours), think i'm more interested in the relative comparison (seeing as these are raw, uncalibrated values) but interesting to see the heat taper off outside but remain steady inside.
  23. Yeah me too. Am going to continue the experiment here today. Was lucky enough to live by the sea in the past and even with no breeze, opening the right windows would generate some movement of air through the house. My thermometer setup isn't too expensive (indoor and outdoor sensor) so whilst not considering it gospel, should give a ball-park and allow me to monitor trend... In 30 mins, outdoors* has increased by 2.2 degrees whilst indoors 0.2 (with curtains closed and some windows open). Outdoors is located in the shade so shouldn't be affected by direct sunlight... Edit: Just added temp values for the last hour.. Impressive difference!
  24. Been thinking about the general advice given to maintain temps as comfortably as possible over the next few days. Ordinarily I would leave south facing curtains closed with windows open around the house to allow air to flow through. Advice from a lot of people in hot countries is - keep windows closed if the temp outside is higher than inside. This seems counter-intuitive. Appreciate curtains closed will prevent some heating but is this advice right? Wouldn't the house just end up being way hotter inside after a while? That said, trying it today - current temp outside is 24.5 whilst indoors is 22.7 - both rising. Thinking that UK houses are designed to retain heat with double glazing and various insulation - that it may take longer to heat up but when its there it'll be way hotter and harder to remove the heat. Any experts on this able to advise - windows closed or open - during the day that is.... Thanks
