  1. no this is about pandas or do you advocate turning the world into one giant safari park..what exactly do pandas bring to the evolutionary table?..who to say they wouldnt have died out whether humans populated the globe or not?..thousands of species became extinct before humans evolved.
  2. no that falls into my second catergory of becoming extinct due to another species whatever those reasons are.
  3. why do species die out?..is it because the cannot adapt to a changing environment or they are pushed to extinction by a new more dynamic species? either way it happens and has done since the beginning of time..i say let them go and if they become extinct so be it.
  4. interesting to see that temperatures are still in the mid to high 20's across much of southern alberta and have been for some time now...a record breaking september perhaps??
  5. what changes would they be?..they must be very very subtle because i have not noticed any??
  6. surely the met office agenda is to produce forecasts across all sectors and to do research into weather related areas..you portray it like some kind of sinister covert govt agency??..get a grip..life's too short!!
  7. im not sure that is correct..i was under the impression that during the winter months warm ssts tend to promote low pressure systems and cold ssts tend to promote high pressure..especailly in more northern latititudes..thus this chart would favour low pressure systems running north east between scotland and iceland giving mild southwesterly spells of weather to north west europe. im not a great fan of ssts dicating our weather to any great extent, if you look back through the records which someone posted on here sometime last year...there dosnt seem to be much if any trend between ssts and weather patterns..they seem to be just signals created by a reaction to the weather.
  8. for me im not too fussed about the reputation system..im not that insecure about getting positive or negative post and had no intention of using it...still i think the issue of cliques is a more important topic that needs addressing...it has been seen that i am not the only one who thinks this is a problem and one that has got worse over the last year certainly...lots of areas of the forum have become sterile and dull and become the reserve of the real 'weather heads' and more casual posters like me are leaving or posting less and less which is a shame.
  9. with all due respect as you are on the board of governers so to speak you would say that wouldnt you?...ive noticed the clicky nature of threads has without a doubt become a lot more prevelant than it used to be..to the point where the variety of topics and posts have diminished considerably.
  10. Unfortunately this forum IMHO is riddled with little cliques that have got worse over the last year or so. Adding this system and then stating negative comments will be removed or may be dropped and only positive marks allowed is ridiculous...whatever happened to everyone being entitled to an opinion? I really dont see the point of this reputation gumpf...lots of back slapping between friends and fist shaking between people with different views..smacks of being back at school where we used to credits and debits for good/bad work/behaviour..what next giving out prizes for the person with the most positive posts at the end of each term and a weeks worth of detention for those with the most negatives marks??? seems a bit of a joke to me.
  11. i would agree with that as a general overview and taking away the bbq summer quote i dont think the forecast was too far of the mark for the majority with regards to temperatures...yes july was wet..but june and august especailly in the south and east have been drier. The met office are in a lose lose situation whatever forecast they put out..there are plenty of people who are ready too shoot them down. We live in an area of the world where the weather is predictable by being unpredictable and wouldnt it be boring if the met office were correct in their forecasts everytime?....this forum wouldnt exist for starters!
  12. why is it a woeful attempt?? is it because it obviously dosnt tally with some peoples thinking on here then it must be wrong?..i think the met office do ok and they are never too far of the mark.
  13. its a nobable effort..problem is it is almost impossible to quantify a country wide table. I could see some events missing or catergorised differently in the areas i have lived in. However thats because of my local knowledge and my own opinion as to the severity of an event. maybe if you had people doing the same kind of table in their own regions and then collated them all together into a national table? intersting read though.
  14. what about the summers of 1983, 1984 and 1989?? all warm/hot summers...i reserve judgement on this summer until beginning of sept.
  15. i think what people dont realise is that back in the 80s..there were only 4 tv channels and only a few radio stations..now there are hundreds..im pretty sure that 95% of them having a trained weather presenter is not top of the agenda.
  16. really??..the long winter evenings must just fly by when your friends are round. i work in a very weather dependant industry..namely construction..and i never heard anybody even mention weather presenters or the standard of forecast delivered...i think that 90% of weather readers on radio have no weather knowledge at all they are just general presenters reading a script..just like the traffic people and sports people as i said before. Talking of francis wilson who has seen the rory bremner impression of his weather forecasting?
  17. . where is your forecast then??..he who cast the first stone and all that!
  18. oh come on..95% of people couldnt give a monkeys who presents the weather esp on radio..most people dont take in weather forecasts anyway...if you understand the weather what do you do?...exactly what you have just said, check the radar listen to an informed forecast and make your own judgement. The general public just want a simple forcast not lots of techno babble..if you asked them what is the average temperature for july or january most people couldnt tell you. they just need to know its a bit chilly or a little bit on the warm side. as for carol kirkwood..does she tell us anything less than a met office trained forecaster..of course not..do i understand the forecast less because she is presenting..no. You dont need a degree and years of met office forecasting experience to read what you are given...because lets face it that is all that they do. are the traffic presenters experts in traffic management? sports readers are they professional sportsmen/women?..no they are just radio/tv people given that job to do.
  19. all this if its and buts were pots and pans is a pointless exercise...it is what it is..you could say this about any month if we didnt have the cold, warm, wet, dry..if only the sun didnt come out during the day it would have been much colder. we did have a hot first five days we havnt had any cool night time minimums so this july will be what is has been overall close to average..becuase of those reasons.
  20. wow 9/10 for winter..guessing you are not very old???...winter wasnt all that cold, snow events nothing special..so i would give it a middling 5/10 i do agree with the spring score of 7/10..not 2 warm cold or wet..very pleasent summer so far is 5/10..june was decent enough apart from the last few days..july not been great for sunshine but its not been that cool either an august like 2006 would suit me jus fine..with a tad more sun.
  21. i remember summer 1984 as being very warm and at times thundery..but nothing remarkable in terms of storms. The story you share dosnt seem anything unusual and a short lived affair. June 1982 was very thundery..i remember one saturday in june 82 where there was a constant stream of storms one after another that lasted most of the day!..also as a child i remember one huge overnight storm i think it was april 1973..that caused chaos with severe flooding and trees being stripped of their branches etc so much so that all the local schools were closed.
  22. thanks for the link nice little site for other films non weather related
  23. the first 5 days for me were horrible..ive got a third floor flat in west london..even with all the windows open, my lounge and bedroom were suffocatingly hot..couldnt get the temp below 32c even at nighttime...much more pleasant 19c right now
  24. wind turbines arnt very efficient hence the reason you have huge numbers that are huge in size to produce enough energy to make a cup of tea. you would virually need a huge windturbine to supply every other house..so at the present time wind isnt the way to go unless there is a huge increase in the efficiency of the wind farms
