November 1993 reason - This is the November I long for the most. It is up there with November 1919. Very cool conditions mid-late month which would certainly rival many of our pathetic shots at cold in our more recent "winters".
how can u say it is up there with nov 1919..as u were not alive to experience it!!???

A key problem that I alluded to last night was that Britain's roads are publicly owned. The trouble is, government has no incentive to resolve anything. It just sits on its hands as the roads get more and more clogged up. In the private sector, there is an incentive to remedy things out of self-interest.
There is an uncanny comparison with the Soviet Union here. The most enduring immage of communism is probably the sight of Russians queueing outside the grocery because there were food shortages, poor quality products and they'd become blue in the face with rage. Yet we have our own version of it here. The roads are an unpriced free-for-all, with demand way in excess of supply, leading to queues, shoddy quality of roads and road rage.
Never forget: there are two (and only two) ways of managing demand for a service. You can charge for it, or you can ration it and force people to queue. Current UK transport policy is the latter.
If we had private roads, the roads would be in much better condition. There would be an incentive to repair them, and repair them quickly, because they will want the value of the road to keep up with the initial capital outlay. Failure to do would mean the road becomes empty, resulting in loss of revenue. There is simply no incentive for this in government run sectors. And the safety of roads would improve too, just like it has on the railways, because companies would know that accidents and injuries would tarnish their reputation. Again, no such incentive for the state.
hang on isnt it our taxes that have funded the building and maintaining the roads over the years????..so we jus give them to private companies to charge us to drive on roads that we have already paid for in the 1st place??..i work in the building industry and there is no way your eutopian idea of road maintainence will ever happen!!!...they will do the bear minimum that is layed down by the govt and no more..in order to maximise profit....look at how railway lines and rolling stocks are maintained!

To be honest, I get fed up with the bleating motorist moaning about how motorists are an "easy target" and suchlike. The fact is, the cost of motoring in real terms has fallen over the last decade. Significantly, this does not reflect the fact that there is a large gap between the private costs of motoring and the social costs of motoring. There is a big "externality" gap: congestion, environmental damage that is not reflected in the private cost. That gap is too large, and needs to be reduced. And I'm afraid that all economic studies done on this support that propositon.
what is the gap..prey tell?..how do define what equates 2 what??

is it unusual for nearly all the northern hemisphere waters to be below average...considering the mild winter experienced in the north?
-
i dont see the hype of jan 87...yes it had an exceptionally cold spell mid month...apart from that it dosnt really register as anything unusual?..i rate jan 79,82,85 as more spectacular!
-
my gut reaction says 12.3c
-
i think it should be months tht ppl have experienced themselves..so it silly someone saying april 1905 4 example!
anyway mine would be...
Jan 1979..the coldest and snowiest winter month i can remember..the most prolonged cold
Feb 1978..i was lucky enough 2 have experienced the one of the greatest blizzards of the 20th century.
Mar 1995..after a poor winter..this month seemed to have everything
Apr 1987..nice warm weather after a cold march
May 1990..glorious sunny month
Jun 1983...doing my exams beautiful warm end and start of a hot summer
Jul 1976...hot hot hot
Aug 1995...lovely dry heat not 2 humid
Sep 2003...pleasently warm after the heat of aug
Oct 2001..moved house dry and warm end to the month
Nov 1980...very cold beginning with snow in the 1st week
Dec 1981...need i say anymore..prolonged cold very snowy...comes a close 2nd to jan 79 as my fav winter month.
-
what kind of summer followed??
-
That makes winter 2006-07 the joint 4th warmest winter on record with 1974-75.
it all depends on where you live..in south west england..it was the warmest winter on record...as confirmed by the met office in exeter.
-
im going with 8.7c as well thnks
-
worst winter i can remember..no snow..no cold..lots of rain and drizzle..damp and dreary all round!
-
a non starter here ...like the winter just gone...no snow not particularly cold either..nothing unusaul for the mid late march..dont know what the fuss was about?
-
wet very mild..sunless
my temps are as follows:
dec = 7.4c, jan = 8.8c, feb = 8.1c
just 2 air frosts
no snow cover or snow falling...in fact not one snow flake
easily the worst in terms of cold and snow in my area in my memory!!
-
my guess is 6.9 thnks

The 28th December event has far been the best winter event so far this 21st century. I recieved 5 inches of snow and then lovely night time minima of -10C. It was memorable the way the snow just didn't melt for days. I think the last of the snow melted on 1st Jan.
Since then, I think only the Jan 28th 2004 thundersnow event came close to matching that event.
technically the 28th december 2000 was still the 20th century..the 21st century started on jan 1 2001....lol
-
gotta say diddly since the turn of the century...all winters have been either mild or fairly non descript and very forgetable!
-
im going for 5.5c..you know it makes sense!
-
i saw tht moscow reached 8c yesterday or thursday!!
-
no way can you class march as a winter month....march has only managed to have a colder cet than feb once in the last 40 yrs..even taking into account we have had some very mild febs in the last twenty of those years...and there have been many occurances of 70f plus days being recorded with frequency in march too...the fact that the number of cold marchs has dimished quite markedly in the last two decades...confirming its position as a spring month!
-
after a warm start im goin for an average spring and summer..and a more seasonal autmn...cet = 10.1c
-
wouldnt the stats about the warmest winter in 30yrs be about north america..as our winter temps would have no bearing on ice formation in the western atlantic.
-
just a note the daffs in my garden started to come through on the 29th december..which is the earliest i have seen by a good week to 10days...before.
