It’s extremely Cold but it’s a dry Cold you Haven’t got the dampness , like in the Uk / Ireland
even so a damp 0c ..doesn't not equate to a dry -40c ..not even close

1987 would miss out i think due to it having the second warmest April of the 20th century ..1978 will be there in the top 5 maybe

1979 and 2010. 79 got an extra 3 weeks off school. Yes schools did close in the 'good old days' contrary to what some claim. Jan 5th 2010 working from home followed by the biggest freeze I've ever known. Minus 18 at night. And snow on ground for a week. Might not sound amazing but believe me it us for Manc
my school never closed in the good old days..let alone 3 weeks ..sometimes we got sent home early if it was snowing heavily ..more for the benefit of teachers than anything else.

But If we must have a hot summer then it needs to avoid humidity. June 18, July 13 and I suppose August 22 would be acceptable.

Another beauty of a day here in Czechia, reached the dizzy heights of 0°C with lovely sunny skies. The sodden ground is starting to dry up a bit at last and river levels are going down after the flooding
a still sunny winters day at 0c is akin to a still summers day at 22c ..good times

got a little bit more snow than forecast yesterday and overnight 25cm in my location..temps on the decline further today as it continues to fall through the day from -21c now to -25c by hometime and then -40c over the weekend..a few -45c have popped up in the forecast for rural locations outside the city.
-
my snow free paradise is about to end ..just started snowing with 15-20cm forecast by tomorrow morning..then temps plunge close to -40c by the weekend

2013/14 and 2014/15 were neutral winters. 2015/16 and 2018/19 are the two latest El Nino winters in recent memory.
dont think 2018-19 was classed as an El Nino as there was never a 3 month period that met the threshold to be classed as one

What a dreadful Winter it's been to now, dull, rain (flooding) occasionally windy and continually mild.
Today maxed out at 7c which is near normal for the time of year, it's been the coldest day here since 7th December which says it all!...has to be the worst pre-Xmas, Xmas period to New Year and into the New Year weather I can remember in my life time. The last El-Nino Winter 2013-14 was also dreadful...
Last El Niño winter was 2015-16 not 13-14

Getting close ,do you think that record will be broken, and what year was the minus 49.4 recorded?
i doubt it ..i think -46c is about a cold as it gets and was pretty exceptional..the record is from the late 1880s when Edmonton was just a trading post for the fur trade..now its a 1.2million City so with global warming and the Urban heat island effect anything below -40c is rare now.

Let's just say that things haven't progressed as we'd thought/hoped?
Highs in the -20s coming as bitter Arctic air freezes Western Canada - The Weather Network
WWW.THEWEATHERNETWORK.COM
A bitter chill will soon spill over the western half of Canada as highs will struggle to get out of the -20s for many communitieslooks like we are getting it instead..was hoping it dropped in on your part of the world instead of mine
