    For some reason, your post reminded me of the day I got my very first pair of 'Harry Potters'. But the polar low of February 12th 1969 was something else!

    The actual weather. . . It's rained but it hasn't snowed. Digital/virtual weather is not the same as the real thing?

    Aye, I did that in the early 1990s -- the snow melted the day we came back. But, after 30C in Tenerife, Glenurquhart was effing cold!

    Well, I spent 20+ years living in the Scottish Highlands: millions of trees blown down, nary a mention; power out for ten days, nary a mention. . . but, an icicle spotted in London, full-on panic!

    I think it depends on (in part, at least) how far you are away from the sea: I was in Inverness in January 2010 and had sleety rain, and it's the same here; uppers of -10C are almost always okay. Sometimes, however, depending on the air source (and dps and such) -4C will do. . . asking John Holmes is never a bad idea.
