Indeed, its more that just the weather...the environment and surroundings play a big part, and the fact that you can enjoy yourself and not stuck at work. Its currently 28c in London, but I'm in the office so what's the benefit of the weather right now?

Almost a cruel irony that we had none of these conditions throughout high summer during the weekends I actually had outdoors plans.

Oh well, it is what it is. The British climate loves to troll the world, always has, always will.

Have a Brewdog and enjoy it👍

Some of my work colleagues have said since June that they did not bother making the most of it at the time because they assumed that because of climate change and the example set by the summer we had in 2022, it was inevitable that the heat would continue through the rest of the summer. Oops...

Of course, the heat did continue and indeed intensify through the rest of the summer - it was just stuck to the south of us for two months!

I fell into the same trap as your co workers. I wasn’t expecting a 2022 redux, but at the time I was confident we would be getting a decent sunny summer.

It really backfired on me lol.

The one good thing was the good late May and June weather coincided with the longer daylight hours. Lots of good twilight evenings after long hot sunny days.

Just a shame it ran out of steam in July, but that’s just me.

That I can certainly sympathise with. The fact I was able to be flexible and "do summer" in May and June probably influences my viewpoint significantly.

Fair enough. It’s all about our own experiences.

I did get to enjoy June, but I’m some ways didn’t fully appreciate it as it happened. It seemed to go too quick lol.

Sods law for you sunny,as soon as you go on holiday, we get a week of hot sunshine here lol

Lol I know. But hey ho. I hope some folk are enjoying it.

I did get a decent thunderstorm this morning and a hot sunny day yesterday, so can’t really complain.

  5. I don’t think families who were limited to taking their main summer holiday during mid July until late August would have benefited from the sunny warm June.

If they can afford to venture abroad fair enough, but if they were restricted to a U.K. break during high summer, if feel it’s been a raw deal for the kids.

Although I get why you would say that and that many would agree with you, I just can't bring myself to say such a thing about a year that contained this June. Perhaps it is because this June was even more glorious in my part of the country than elsewhere, and because the great weather started as early as mid-May here giving an even more extended period of good weather than elsewhere. There have been summers since 2012 which might be considered better than this one because they did not contain such a prolonged spell of dire weather in the high summer period, but for me personally, it was a price worth paying for what came before it (and for what is now coming after it!)

    Anyone agree with me?

Yeah, but the problem is and was that June became easily forgotten by the time we reached early August, and experienced weeks of poor grey cloudy weather.

June 2009 and 2010 were just as good in London, but both of those summers overall went downhill and were poor.

No, I’m sorry I will have to disagree there. I would have taken a poor June, even following the hilly spring we had and so so May, if July and August were warm and sunny.

Just seen a vid from a friend who owns a hotel in Corfu - absolute torrential rain there today.

Yeah, I think that’s what we had this morning about 8-10am. Thunder and lightning out at sea was quite impressive to witness.

Stunning day here. Temp of 23c, a nice breeze. Not as hot as 'at home' but good enough esp as forecast is wrong again.

    Certainly looks nice.

Think we’ve got what the western Med had a day or two ago. We have the unsettled weather here today, after the storms this morning. The rain has died off, so we went for a walk along the shoreline.

I was hoping we'd escaped the worst of the usual Summer Heatwaves this year but here we go again. 😡 Not sure why people claim "We haven't had much of a Summer". 🙄  It's been sunny here almost every single day since April, with hardly any convective activity this year whatsoever. 😬 I haven't seen a storm since the beginning of May I think and anything I have seen has been barely extremely rare and barely active. Any remote chance after this disgusting heat finally buggers off we'll be in for a thundery breakdown? Desperate for something substantial this year. Haven't seen a single fork for over a year. 👎

We didn’t have very good summer between early July until the middle part of August.

Yes, it did improve as August went on, but July was appalling for its lack of sunshine and long sunny warm days.

For people who hate the heat, I think Summer 23 has been the ideal season for people who hate hot sunny weather.

The current weather this week looks to be the only good sustained period of warm sunny days since June for people who enjoy summery weather.

21c, mainly sunny, but threat of showers remains. Expected 'high' of 23c today.

Yesterday eve after dinner the bar we use was packed inside, as it was too cold outside with a strong breeze. At 10.00pm last night air temp was only 18c, but the wind chill made it feel more like 12/13c. Very unusual for The Algarve in early Sept.

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully it clears up soon. The bottom line is, it’s a change of scene. But, sometimes it’s Sod’s Law when you want some much needed sunshine, when your home country fails to deliver and you search for it elsewhere.

  11. We just had a thunderstorm move through where I am in Greece this morning. Was baking yesterday at 30-31c, but today it’s looking like 24-25c max with cloudy conditions. Last night was very hot at 25c.

Time for massage and spa I think today.

Enjoy the lovely 29-30c heat back in Blighty.

I'm heading to Porto on the 16th, this current synoptic is making me nervous!

I think you should be ok. September often does have a couple of unsettled days with storms in the med areas. I usually go in September, and we’ve never had a full week of sunny days. But, we always avoid July and August as it’s usually too hot, even for a heat lover like myself lol.

Peng means beautiful. Fam along with bro, blud, bruv another term for mate.

    Gassed means excited.

    I hate the term fam.

Nobody can call me fam, unless you are my partner or a blood relative.

It’s so commonly used by younger folk in certain communities, and probably by many who would be too eager to stab(pardon the pun) you in the back, if stuff goes south.

So, if someone addresses me as ‘fam’, I’ll be keeping a close eye on him/her. I certainly won’t trust them lol.

Gassed and peng are used by people born after 1990.

I don’t know why people use it, but I just roll my eyes when someone says ‘I was so gassed’.

Another term I can’t stand is when they say ‘it’s so peak man’ lol.

Not impressed.  Take 3 weeks off in June to go to France, missed the hottest June on record.  Back home for two months and welcomed by crud.  Now I'm in Amsterdam next week sat in a conference room all day and, of course, the heat returns.  I'm cursed! 🤣🤣

That’s just rotten bad luck. It probably feels like a cloud has followed you round every time you return to the U.K.

Lol I had a similar experience with wanting snow one winter when going to see my partners family in Latvia. It snowed for several weeks prior to our visit, then turned mild for our arrival during Christmas, and remained green for the whole Christmas into new year period. Although chilly, it was snowless. We flew back to London around the 3rd of January, and a week later the snow was falling yet again, while I was back in rainy mild London 🤣

Not so sure, I'm a little bit older and while my childhood had some dodgy summers, I think the long stretch of good summers during my late teens, 20s and early 30s has made more of an impression on me than a few dodgy childhood summers. And even during the iffy early 80s period we had August 1981 and July 1982.

It's also possible that I subconsciously remember the summers of 1975 and 1976 (in those summers I was still pre-primary-school), even though I have little or no conscious memories of them. This could also play a part in "expecting" half-decent summers.

78-79 and 80 were stinkers though. And 81 wasn’t great either, apart from the August being warmish and sunny. There did seem to be a poor run of summers after 1976 until 1983.

Similar to the 2007-12 period, following the hot summer of 2006, then having to wait until 2013 before we had a reasonable summer again.

  16. Revolting.

June was lovely, but it went downhill after that and the nice sunny warm days of mid to late August weren’t enough to save it.

A summer for the bin. One good thing was the storms. Had a decent on over the August bank holiday weekend, but other than the hot sunny weather in June, it was pretty meh.

I think the funniest part of the warm September analogue is the idea of someone breathing a sigh of relief at a 14.9 CET but having a breakdown at 15.0

I simply have more interesting things to ponder than worry about the number it ends up in. Still, rather unusual anomaly isn’t it! Though warm Septembers have had cold winters follow in olden times.

September 2015 was chilly and September 2017 at times too. Fond memories of those Septembers for their weather. Just a shame 2015 had to go into psycho mode soon after.

2015 was only strange in December. I remember November and the early part of 2016 being cold.

Anyway, currently in Greece with a daytime high of 29-30, and overnight lows of 23-25c. Heaven 😎

Nope, you are not practicing what you are preaching because you are banging on about how crap you think the summer just gone was.  We get It!!!!!

I have to repeat myself, for those who appear to be deaf to any reason. Or in this case it would be blind.

Your getting boring now pal, WE GET IT..... change the record now why don't you?

BTW Enjoy your holiday, i am sure some of us will 😉😂😂

Not as boring as hearing how good June was. I can’t remember how many times we need to be reminded about it lol.

    Thanks, I will 👍

Summer was crap. There I said it. Close thread.

Glad someone speaks from the same hymn sheet.

Summer was crap for people who enjoy proper summer weather and long clear sunny spells.

I just elaborated a bit more, because we both know this summer was wonderful for those who hate sunshine and some nice summer warmth.

Why do you think I use an index? You're making my point for using an index.  June prevents this summer from being put in the same box with 2012, 1956, 1954 etc because June was far superior than any of those Junes. You can't ignore that June.

Will you stop banging on about June!

Lol it was the best June for years. We get it! But it wasn’t a good summer.

The summer index for London came out as 304, or very slightly above the average. That must be due to June doing all the heavy lifting regarding temperature and sunshine, because July and August were both worse than normal.

Summer 1996, which was a fairly typical British summer, had a summer index of 302, yet most would say it was far superior to this year.

1996 had a good June with a decent severe thunderstorm. This came after the cold spring.

July was so so, and I remember August being mixed.
