  1. From 70 mph? Maybe it's just more common up here but 80 mph seems to be about the boundary where it goes from being an inconvenience with minor damage to a more dangerous storm with widespread disruption and damage.
  2. Bridges will be shut to high side vehicles, some rail might be affected but probably more locally than widespread.70mph won't cause much damage, maybe a couple of trees down and damaged fences/sheds etc.
  3. Unusual to see the whole of the UK covered by strong winds. If it stays like that then even London could be seeing 55-60 mph gusts. The max gusts might not be that unusual but the widespread nature of them could bring a lot of disruption.
  4. Looks to be about 60-70mph through the central belt, maybe 80ish in the northwest and southern parts.
  5. Funny that's the first storm i can remember too and i was also 8 at the time.More like 90mph where i am but still plenty of minor damage and intermittent power cuts during the night. The only one that's got to that level since was the Jan 3rd storm a few years back. Like 99% of storms the ones during next week will likely be downgraded.I wouldn't take serious notice of the details until 3 days out and by then it'll likely be limited to 50-60mph and mostly affecting Scotland.
  6. There's currently still a 21 hour yellow warning for wind where i am with max gusts forecast to be 42mph... it's been over 50mph with no yellow warning a couple of times this winter, can see why people think the warning system is farcical at times.
  7. Yellow warning for me on Monday with the current max gusts forecast to be 39mph it was more than that yesterday...
  8. Probably about 1cm here although i'm sure any higher routes not too far away did ok.It was constant heavyish snow for about 2 hrs last night but falling on to wet ground and with the temp between 1 and 2 it struggled to stick. It's melted back and went quite slushy already. It's unusual for anything to settle in such a marginal setup here, it usually stays as rain or sleet.
  9. Heavy rain transitioning to snow in Motherwell, 20 mins of heavy-ish snow starting to settle here now.Any higher areas in Lanarkshire will get a decent covering.
  10. I think it has to bring an amber warning to become a named storm.Personally i've always thought the Irish met have a slightly lower threshold for each warning and a stormy spell in Ireland could have very limited effects on the UK mainland so i don't think storms should be named by the met unless it's got an amber warning for somewhere in the UK.
  11. Thunder and a good flash of lightening overhead here in Motherwell...
  12. Seemed to peak between 3 and 4pm here, winds dropped a bit now. They were maxing out at about 55 mph earlier.
  13. Looks like the worst of Brendan will pass through the central belt between 2pm and 4pm, i think the upper gusts might have been underestimated a bit as it's already reaching about 45 mph.
  14. Looks like more of a coastal feature to me, not many inland areas are showing gusts over 55mph.The central belt doesn't even have a warning yet...
  15. If Mondays low was just a bit closer it could bring storm force winds quite widely across the Northern half of the UK but it looks like it'll drift towards Iceland and weaken slighty, probably bringing similar conditions to what we're getting tonight.
  16. Raining and blustery here in Motherwell, gusts near 40mph.The met have unbroken heavy rain through until 6pm tomorrow.
  17. Plenty of stormy weather on the way if the gfs is to be believed next Monday into Tuesday and then again at 10 days, not going happen but it'd be an 'interesting' day across the north if it did...
  18. Might have spoke too soon, 55-60 mph gusts and driving rain for the last 20 minutes in Motherwell.
  19. Quite tame really where i am, top gusts around 50 - 55mph but mostly in the 40s.Every 'stormy' spell over the last year or so has been watered down quite a bit by the time it arrives.
  20. Picking up a bit in Lanarkshire over the last hour, top gusts around 50mph so far, similar to yesterday.
  21. The weather warnings look a bit strange, they're missing the western central belt but include much of the east.Where i am is under a warning even though i'm not within the yellow warning zones. Looks like 50-60 mph quite widely with 65-75 mph in exposed areas.
  22. Remember that one well, it only lasted for about 45 minutes but had frequent 80-90mph gusts.Quite a bit of damage done especially to sheet roofs, saw plenty of them scattered around over the next few days and over the coming weeks their were plenty of people up replacing lost tiles.Lots of damaged trees too with a few of them being cut down over the following months. There could be a couple of wind warnings out next week with 50-60mph forecast quite widely across Scotland between Monday and Wednesday.
  23. Do they not only name storms if there's an amber warning somewhere in the UK or Ireland? Personally i don't think it was worth an amber warning where i am, it barely even reached severe gale force.
  24. Do you know which one is closest to Reykjavik?
