  1. Must admit i do like stormy weather but i don't see it being anything out of the ordinary.'Hurricane bawbag' wasn't all that bad where i am mostly in the 60-70mph range although quite persistent as it lasted for a good 5/6 hours. The Jan 3rd storm was the strongest i've ever experienced. It only lasted about an hour but it was regularly getting to around 90mph.Plenty of sheet roofs blown off including the full roof on nearby council flats and there must have been a lot of tiles off with the amount of people up fixing their roofs over the following few weeks.Boxing day 98 was quite bad too but Jan 3rd was the only proper near Hurricane strength storm i've seen.
  2. Decent heavy snow shower in Motherwell, turning lighter now.
  3. Freezing fog in Motherwell has left every tree looking white...
  4. Got a decent shower about an hour ago in Motherwell, looks like it could be on and off for a while.Just a dusting at the moment though.
  5. It has been quite a dry last 12 months in general. The only wetter than average period i can remember was the first half of October. There's been very few stormy/windy days either.
  6. Where's all this optimism for the next 2 days coming from? The met have Glasgow and surrounding areas at about 3-4 degrees and heavy rain through tomorrow night possibly turning to sleet or light snow showers on Tuesday. It doesn't look like a forecast that would bring lying snow to anywhere other than the hills...
  7. The MO had a 10% chance of rain from 3pm onwards today but there were a couple of heavy showers around 4/5, some of their short range forecasts have been a bit dodgy for me over the last few weeks often missing out on rain... got a good double rainbow over Motherwell earlier today though...
  8. Missed all the fun here, have to say this was one of the biggest let downs from an amber warning i've ever seen.Nothing more than rain at lower levels through the central belt.Fair enough higher levels got some snow but an amber warning over such a big area clearly wasn't needed, even a yellow warning is pushing it where i am.
  9. Chances are it will be milder than the long term average, most recent winters have been.
  10. Is anybody on here near Carluke. If it's not snowing there then nowhere in the central belt will get it.
  11. Rain here at the moment, there was a couple of light freezing rain showers earlier that left frozen drips on things but never really developed into anything and melted within about an hour.
  12. I'd imagine freezing rain will be something that the UK would struggle badly with if it's actually as widespread as the warnings suggest. There would be a lot of power cuts and car crashes if heavily populated areas get it.
  13. In terms of days where snow falls the first half of dec and first half of apr have been fairly even where i am over the last 20 years. The days where snow actually settles is miles apart though, i've never seen snow settling and staying around for more than a few hours in April compared to lying snow for 24 hours + in at least half of the Decembers that i can remember.
  14. Pretty bog standard where i am (central belt) nothing more than 40-45mph.A warning wasn't needed here if this is as bad as it's going to get.
  15. Why is it that stormy spells almost always (9 times out of 10) get downgraded a day or two out? Is there something the models don't consider, interaction with land or something? At 5-7 days there's plenty that show wind gusts at 80-90mph then by the day itself it's more like 50-60mph.Surely there should be some tweaks to how the models handle storms when they clearly over play them nearly every time.
  16. Surely making it a simple 'once it hits this point it's named' would be the best way to go.Say amber for wind and red for snow/rain.
  17. If the low on the 14th was that intense there would be red warnings all over the place...
  18. Damaging winds? All i'm seeing for the first week of November is bog standard gales mostly in the far north other than through Saturday morning where Wales and the midlands might get 50-60mph gusts.Doesn't look like anything overly stormy.
  19. So the met are going for wet and windy first few days in Nov while the bbc have it calm and quiet up til the 5th where i am...
  20. A more experienced model watcher would give a far better explanation, mine was just an observation on Kirkcaldy Weathers post.It looks like we're in more of a cool rather than cold flow for the first week in Nov.
  21. That looks like quite a big change from previous runs with the low further west instead of right over or just to the east for the first weekend in Nov.
  22. Being a bit of a noob when it comes to models does anyone want to hazard a guess what the first week in Nov looks like for Central Scotland? Being an events steward isn't much fun if it's raining all night.
  23. The met have been steadily reducing expected wind speeds for central Scotland over the last day or so with top gusts only around 45mph here which is barely worth a yellow warning.Ali had gusts to 65mph where i am and unless there's a big upgrade i can't see this storm getting to that level at least not through central Scotland.
  24. It's actually not as bad as i expected here in Motherwell, quite blowy but the winds peaked around 65mph about an hour ago.No damage other than a neighbours fence down and some twigs and garden ornaments down.
  25. Spoke too soon, gusting near 60mph quite regularly now, sunny too.
