You've been saying this most of the winter and even the law of averages has failed you!! It will get milder eventually, it always does!
  2. One of the few times I've seen snow drifting here, one of the other times was this winter!

I was at school and remember the rain slowly changing to snow through the friday and everywhere was soaked. The temperature continued to fall and the snow lay and the slush started to freeze.

By Saturday morning there was more than a foot of snow but it hadn't drifted yet and from memory not a lot more fell during the day. On Saturday evening it started snowing again and by Sunday morning the whole village was cut off by huge drifts. Sure my parents will have the old cinefilm of us walking against the drifts which were an incredible sight for here. Don't know the depth but the most snow I've ever seen here, cars half buried and drifted over, can't wait for it to be reapeated!

  3. Region to bask in sunshine as forecasters predict no more snow this week

SNOW still lay on the ground in higher parts of the region today (Monday, February 25) after a weekend of freezing conditions (MON FEB 25) – but forecasters said the temperatures are expected to rise this week. Consett in County Durham and other higher parts of the region saw up to three inches of snow on Saturday, with some low-lying areas getting flurries and a scattering of snow on the ground. The North-East and North Yorkshire should see temperatures of up to 7 C this week and sunshine as an area of high pressure moves across the UK. The likelihood of snow in the next week to ten days is very low, said forecasters.

John Lee, forecaster at the MeteoGroup, said: “The next few days are likely to be dry and it is becoming slightly less cold, although temperatures are still below the seasonal average. “The North-East will see a high of about 5C tomorrow (TUESDAY) and possibly up to 7C on Wednesday.“The risk of more snow this year is lessening all the time because we are coming to the end of winter and heading into spring. This week we are also under the influence of high pressure which means that many areas will stay dry but also bright.†However, he said more snow this year could not be entirely ruled out until well into the Spring.

    Haha, very lazy reporting there!

I'm on low ground and received more than 3" of snow, this came about not from flurries but prolonged heavy snow!! Followed by more heavy snow showers.

Love the statement 'The risk of more snow this year is lessening all the time because we are coming to the end of winter and heading into spring'!!!!! Here's me thinking that happened every year! Bet he's getting paid to come out with that drivel too!

  4. Yet another spell of cold frosty and potentially snowy weather on the way.

To be honest I'd be happy for some warmth now after a long winter, that's 3 out of the last 4 I'd class as good ones.

We were told it was going to be into double figures this weekend. Wishfull thinking, struggling to get above 6C at the moment here and this looks like being the 'mildest' day of the next 7 at least. Indeed by next weekend temps look like they'll struggle to get much above freezing!

Can't remember if we got snow in November but certainly we've had it in October December January and February.

Fingers crossed the kids get another (hopefully the last!) day of sledging and snowmen!!

All that finger crossing has worked, and after sausage sarnies we're off sledging!!

Hopefully even the doom n gloom merchants are happy and next time won't write it off before its even began.

    Very heavy snow falling now.

  6. The main reason is because by Mid February onwards the south starts to see milder temperatures, the sun is getting higher and the days are longer so any snow which does fall can often melt a lot quicker than it would in say December and January.

Can anyone remember (excluding the 47 winter) when we last saw a sustained cold and snowy period after February because I can't

Don't remember exactly which year but either 77/78 or 79, mid march, deepest snow in my lifetime here. Village cut off by snow which is the one and only time I remember it happening here.

  7. Planned a ride up past Waskerley but got turned back because of drifting snow.

Cracking walk in Slaley forest with the dog instead. Deep deep snow, trees weighed down with snow and really spectacular.

Back home to an extra 2cm snow and a rarity for here, proper blowing snow!!

For me that's 3 out of the last 4 winters in the 'canny' class. Think back to all those snowless winters with barely even a frost all winter!

To drive through the likes of Stanley and Consett and see the amount of snow is incredible, great dayrolleyes.gif

  8. This has been a strange cold spell here. Yes we have had a bit of snow but it has all been marginal. In fact I don't quite know how we still have 3-4 inches on undisturdeb ground here, as in the last 8 or 9 days the temperature has barely fallen below freezing, despite repeated daily forecasts predicting otherwise!!! This is not good from our national forecaster. I don't mean it has been "just" out, I mean statiscally importantly erroneous, with forecasts recently showing regular night-time minima of -3 to -9, and actually not getting below freezing!!As I type, the Meto on-line forecast for Ryton (and presumably representative of other relatively low-lying parts of the North East) is for -5 tonight by midnight and then not getting above freezing until midnight tomorrow night ! If that happens I will run round Ryton with my pants on my head, cos it aint happenned so far this cold spell.

Hha, got to laugh, just watched the 6.30 weather beeb 1, I know the graphics are only representative, but it quite clearly showed the snow actuall missing Newcastle altogether tomorrow, slipping slightly South instead. Well, we will see, but I can't get greatly excited,

    Karl

Have you got your pants ready mate?! Overnight low of -6.1C.......
